The content of cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in the gills of the mullet (Mugil capito) has been measured. The basal level was found to be 2.9+/-0.3 pmol/mg wet weight. When fish were first anaesthetized with MS222 (tricaine) and the gills perfused to remove blood, the concentration of cAMP was raised to 14.3+/-1.9 pmol/mg wet weight.Adrenaline caused a significant increase in cAMP content, an effect that was blocked by propranalol, a beta-adrenoceptor antagonist. In the presence of the alpha-adrenoceptor block- ing agent phentolamine, adrenaline still caused an increase in nucleo…

Studies of barrier cells in fishes are few and have been restricted primarily to salmonids. Moreover, these studies revealed the presence of barrier cells only in hematopoietic and lymphoid organs. The alligator gar, Lepisosteus spatula, possesses similar tissues within the gills which are readily accessible; therefore, they were the organs of choice. An electron microscopical analysis of the gills was undertaken to determine if barrier cells exist and if they possess an ultrastructural design comparable to their counterparts in the brain and lungs of higher vertebrates and hematopoietic/lymph…

Previous studies have described the morphology, innervation and O(2)-chemoreceptive properties of neuroepithelial cells (NECs) of the zebrafish gill filaments. The present work describes the ontogenesis of these cells, and the formation of functional O(2)-sensing pathways in developing zebrafish. Confocal immunofluorescence was performed on whole-mount gill preparations using antibodies against serotonin (5-HT) and a zebrafish-derived neuronal marker (zn-12) to identify the appearance and innervation of gill NECs during larval stages. NECs were first expressed in gill filament primordia of lar

This study examines the potential implications of biofouling management on the development of an infectious disease in Norwegian farmed salmon. The hydroid Ectopleura larynx frequently colonises cage nets at high densities (thousands of colonies per m2) and is released into the water during regular in-situ net cleaning. Contact with the hydroids' nematocysts has the potential to cause irritation and pathological damage to salmon gills. Amoebic gill disease (AGD), caused by the amoeba Paramoeba perurans, is an increasingly international health challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. AGD often occ…

The ultrastructure of the gills of Echinus esculentus is described using transmission electron microscopy. The gills are covered by typical epithelial cells overlying a collagenous basement membrane. The coelomic lumen of the gills is thrown into a series of irregular grooves and ridges which are formed by long narrow cells from each of which projects a single cilium. There is a layer of muscle cells lying underneath these cells adjacent to the basement membrane. They are innervated by axons containing large granular vesicles and the significance of this innervation is discussed in terms of ne…

Insects, spiders and plants risk drowning in their wetland habitats. The slow diffusion of O(2) can cause asphyxiation when underwater, as O … s on leaves of wetland plants (Phalaris arundinacea) and also show the importance of these physical gills by the resulting changes upon their removal. The gas films provide an enlarged gas-water interface to enhance O(2) uptake underwater that is above that if only spiracles (insects) or stomata (plants) provided the gas-phase contact with the water. Bo …

Dopamine is an essential modulator of oxygen sensing and control of ventilation and is the most well described and abundant neurotransmitter in the mammalian carotid body. Little is known of the evolutionary significance of dopamine in oxygen sensing, or whether it plays a similar role in anamniotes. In the model vertebrate, zebrafish (Danio rerio), presynaptic dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) expression was demonstrated in gill neuroepithelial cells (NECs), analogues of mammalian oxygen chemoreceptors; however, a mechanism for dopamine and D2R in the gills had not been defined. The present study te…

The gills of fish have a great external contact surface and are particularly sensitive to chemical and physical changes in the aquatic environment. The aim of this study was to examine the histopathologic alterations in the gills of Astyanax fasciatus and Cyanocharax alburnus and to determine if there is a correlation between the severity of the alterations and environmental degradation and if this biological system can be used as a tool for evaluating water quality in monitoring programmes. The gills of 107 specimens of Astyanax fasciatus and 116 of Cyanocharax alburnus were collected seasona…

This review focuses on the structure and function of the branchial chloride cell in freshwater fishes. The mitochondria-rich chloride cell is believed to be the principal site of trans-epithelial Ca2+ and Cl- influxes. Though currently debated, there is accruing evidence that the pavement cell is the site of Na+ uptake via channels linked electrically to an apical membrane vacuolar H(+)-ATPase (proton pump). Chloride cells perform an integral role in acid-base regulation. During conditions of alkalosis, the surface area of exposed chloride cells is increased, which serves to enhance base equiv

The presence of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) on the basal membrane of the branchial endothelial cells in the blue crab and its physiological significance were studied in vivo using a membrane-impermeant CA inhibitor, quaternary ammonium sulfanilamide (QAS). Injection of QAS into the hemolymph of Callinectes sapidus resulted in the rapid development of a respiratory acidosis; PCO2 rose almost 2 Torr, pH was lowered by approximately 0.25 units, and total CO2 rose by 2 mM. These results support the hypothesis that membrane-associated CA exposed to hemolymph is present in the crustacean gill

All ionoregulating marine fishes examined to date utilize seawater-type ionocytes expressing the apical Cl- channel, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (Cftr) to secrete Cl-. We performed transcriptomic, molecular and functional studies to identify Cl- transporters in the seawater-type ionocytes of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). Gill cftr expression was minimal or undetectable in larvae and post-metamorphic juveniles. We identified other Cl- transporters highly expressed in the gills and/or upregulated following metamorphosis and further investigated two candidates that sto…

BACKGROUND: Tourette's syndrome is a developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by multiple motor, stereotypical but non-rhythmic movements and vocalizations/phonics called tics. It is one of several disorders that have tics as their cardinal feature. These tics manifest themselves in various ways, ranging from simple eye blinking to coprolalia (involuntary swearing).
METHOD: We conducted a review in Medline and ScienceDirect without restrictions, after which we did a normative and qualitative analysis to identify relevant information to improve the profession's understanding of th

In aquatic vertebrates, hypoxia induces physiological changes that arise principally from O(2) chemoreceptors of the gill. Neuroepithelial cells (NECs) of the zebrafish gill are morphologically similar to mammalian O(2) chemoreceptors (e.g. carotid body), suggesting that they may play a role in initiating the hypoxia response in fish. We describe morphological changes of zebrafish gill NECs following in vivo exposure to chronic hypoxia, and characterize the cellular mechanisms of O(2) sensing in isolated NECs using patch-clamp electrophysiology. Confocal immunofluorescence studies indicated th

OBJECTIVE: To make a specific review of the definition and symptomatology of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.
DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSION: We made an basic syndrome evaluation and at the same time established a relationship with/between the most significant co-morbid features. We also refer briefly to current drug treatment and dosage and mention some of the most relevant side-effects of these drugs. The exact etiology of this disorder is still not fully understood but it is thought to be due to autosomal dominant inheritance, with marked penetration in males.

The study of childhood movement disorders is still in an early stage. Tics and related disorders are recognized as one of the most common movement disorders. This contribution reviews the main clinical, epidemiological, pathophysiological, and treatment issues on tics and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Although these disorders are not life threatening, they may be psychologically or functionally disabling. Early diagnosis and special management permit the alleviation of symptoms.
