The posterior glottis is an area of the larynx previously referred to by the terms 'posterior commissure' and 'interarytenoid'; these are poorly defined and a new definition of this unique area of the larynx is provided. Within the text is a series of experiments performed on nearly 300 larynges. The posterior glottis was examined in relation to the following: the embryology, the epithelium, mathematical dimensions, gross anatomy, microanatomical structures, submucosal spaces and the spread of carcinoma related to this area. In this paper, a new photokymographical method of recording vocal cord vibrations is described, which has considerable advantages over the hitherto known method of larynx photokymography. Its temporal dissolving power is increased and the registration time can be prolonged to any extent. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to study the hitherto unclear aerodynamic parameters of the pseudo-glottis following total laryngectomy. These parameters include airflow rate, sub-pseudo-glottic pressure (SubPsG), efficiency and resistance, as well as sound pressure level (SPL).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen male patients who have undergone total laryngectomy, with an age range from 54 to 72 years, were investigated in this study. All tested patients were fluent esophageal 'voice' speakers utilizing tracheo-esophageal prosthesis. The airflow rate, SubPsG and SPL were measured.

The surgical technic of horizontal glottic laryngectomy and the oncological and functional results in 12 cases treated in ENT Clinic of Pomeranien Medical Academy in Szczecin during the years 1985-1991 are presented. In all cases the changes concerned the vocal cords and were of following extend: T1b--5 cases and T2--7 cases. The survival rate was: 5-years--4/6 patients, 3-year--8/10 patients and 1-2-years--2/2 patients. 3 patients died. The causes of death were: intraoperation--1 case, local recurrence--1 case and non neoplastic case--1 case. Among 12 cases decaniulation were possible in 9.

The CO2 laser is being used in several department for primary treatment of limited vocal cord carcinoma. The surgical resection is not the same in several department. One speaks of vaporisation, laser excision, cordectomy, deep cordectomy. The purpose of this paper is to definitive 3 types of laser surgery for glottic cancer = partial cordectomy, cordectomy with exposition, enlarged cordectomy. This classification allow to know with precision the importance of the surgical resection in each case.

UNLABELLED: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease of the connective tissue, which can affect larynx and cricoarytenoid (CA) joints, as well. The AIM of this study was assessment of 1) glottis morphology and frequency of laryngeal structures involvement in RA of peripheral joints and 2) evaluation of rheumatoid patients' complaints which can indicate the laryngeal involvement.
MATERIAL: 77 patients were examined (71 women and 16 men) in the age from 19 to 77 (mean 56,69). RA duration was from 1 month to 29 years (mean 9,38). RA was active in 61% of patients.

We measured the separation of the vocal folds, the glottis chink, on inspiration and expiration during quiet breathing in 34 patients with varying degrees of airflow obstruction as measured by forced expired volume in one second, Width of the glottis chink was calculated from photographs of the vocal folds taken via a fiberoptic bronchoscope.
