Differences in iron content between gray matter heterotopia and normal gray matter.

BACKGROUND: Gray matter heterotopia (GMH) is a common etiology of epilepsy. However, the precise pathophysiological mechanisms driving epileptogenesis remain unclear. Iron deposition has been postulated as a potential modulator of neuronal excitability in epilepsy. Leveraging the unique advantage of enhanced T2*-weighted magnetic resonance angiography (ESWAN) sequence in quantitatively assessing cerebral iron content, this study aimed to assess differences in iron deposition between GMH and normal gray matter (NGM), and to explore the potential pathophysiology of GMH-related epilepsy. METHODS…

Subependymal Gray Matter Heterotopia.

A 31-year-old woman presented at the department of neurology with a history of seizures since childhood. About five years ago her seize pattern changed from generalized atonic attacks with asphyxia to simple partial attacks characterized by left hemiparesis and speech difficulties. These seizures occurred multiple times a day and typically lasted about a minute. The patient had a negative family history of epilepsy.

Dissociating regional gray matter density and gray matter volume in autism spectrum condition.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of research, there is continued uncertainty regarding whether autism is associated with a specific profile of gray matter (GM) structure. This inconsistency may stem from the widespread use of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) methods that combine indices of GM density and GM volume. If GM density or volume, but not both, prove different in autism, the traditional VBM approach of combining the two indices may obscure the difference. The present study measures GM density and volume separately to examine whether autism is associated with alterations in GM volume, density,…

Gray matter alterations in parosmia.

Parosmia is a common olfactory disorder. In this condition, odors are perceived in a different quality than usual. This distorted olfactory … ited a similar performance in olfactory tests. Performing a whole brain analysis, we found profound gray matter volume loss in the left anterior insula in parosmic patients. In an additional volume of interest analysis including primary and secondary olfactory areas, we also found volume loss in the right anterior insula, the anterior cingulate cortex, the hi …

Cerebellar Gray Matter Volume in Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. The flocculus (FL) and paraflocculus (PFL), which are small lobules of the cerebellum, have recently been implicated in its pathophysiology. In a previous study, the volume of the (P)FL-complex correlated with tinnitus severity in patients that had undergone cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor removal. In this study, the relation between tinnitus and gray matter volume (GMV) of the (P)FL-complex, GMV of the other cerebellar lobules and GMV of the cerebellar nuclei is investigated in otherwise healthy participants. Data was processe…

Cerebellar Gray Matter and Olfactory Performance.

The role of the cerebellum in the chemical senses is still poorly understood. This voxel-based morphometry (VBM) study investigated associations between gray matter volume (GMV) in subregions of the cerebellum and olfactory performance. VBM data from 48 men were analyzed. The participants were tested with a standardized olfactory test that measured olfactory threshold, discrimination, and identification ability. The investigated sample covered a wide range of olfactory performance, including individuals with a reduced sense of smell (anosmia and hyposmia) and normosmia. The computed regression…

White matter rather than gray matter damage characterizes essential tremor.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated changes in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) in the whole brain, including both cortical and subcortical structures, and their relationship with tremor severity, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive impairment in patients affected by essential tremor (ET). METHODS: We studied 19 ET patients and 15 healthy subjects (HS). All the subjects underwent a 3-T MRI study based on 3D-T1 and diffusion tensor images. For the GM analysis, cortical thickness was assessed by using the Computational Anatomy Tool, basal ganglia and thalamus volumes by using the FMRIB software l…

Gray matter and white matter abnormalities in online game addiction.

Online game addiction (OGA) has attracted greater attention as a serious public mental health issue. However, there are only a few brain magnetic resonance imaging studies on brain structure about OGA. In the current study, we used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to investigate the microstructural changes in OGA and assessed the relationship between these morphology changes and the Young's Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS) scores within the OGA group. Compared with healthy subjects, OGA individuals showed significant gray matter atrophy in the rig…

Gray matter based spatial statistics framework in the 1-month brain: insights into gray matter microstructure in infancy.

The neurodevelopmental epoch from fetal stages to early life embodies a critical window of peak growth and plasticity in which differences believed to be associated with many neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders first emerge. Obtaining a detailed understanding of the developmental trajectories of the cortical gray matter microstructure is necessary to characterize differential patterns of neurodevelopment that may subserve future intellectual, behavioral, and psychiatric challenges. The neurite orientation dispersion density imaging (NODDI) Gray-Matter Based Spatial Statistics (GBSS) f…

Gray matter integrity predicts white matter network reorganization in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease leading to gray matter atrophy and brain network reconfiguration as a response to increasing tissue damage. We evaluated whether white matter network reconfiguration appears subsequently to gray matter damage, or whether the gray matter degenerates following alterations in white matter networks. MRI data from 83 patients with clinically isolated syndrome and early relapsing-remitting MS were acquired at two time points with a follow-up after 1 year. White matter network integrity was assessed based on probabilistic…

Abnormal gray matter and white matter volume in 'Internet gaming addicts'.

Internet gaming addiction (IGA) is usually defined as the inability of an individual to control his/her use of the Internet with serious negative consequences. It is becoming a prevalent mental health concern around the world. To understand whether Internet gaming addiction contributes to cerebral structural changes, the present study examined the brain gray matter density and white matter density changes in participants suffering IGA using voxel-based morphometric analysis. Compared with the healthy controls (N=36, 22.2 ± 3.13 years), IGA participants (N=35, 22.28 ± 2.54 years) showed signifi…

Alteration of gray matter microstructure in schizophrenia.

Neuroimaging studies demonstrate gray matter (GM) macrostructural abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). While ex-vivo and genetic studies suggest cellular pathology associated with abnormal neurodevelopmental processes in SCZ, few in-vivo measures have been proposed to target microstructural GM organization. Here, we use diffusion heterogeneity- to study GM microstructure in SCZ. Structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were acquired on a 3 Tesla scanner in 46 patients with SCZ and 37 matched healthy controls (HC). After correction for free water, diffusion heter…

[Diffuse subcortical heterotopias of the gray matter].

Three cases of diffuse subcortical gray matter heterotopias in children are reported. Generalised seizures and mild mental retardation were the most frequent signs. No specific electroencephalographic pattern was recognized. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showed the thick diffuse layer of heterotopic gray matter which was surrounded by normal white matter. Gyration was normal, and no associated malformation was observed. This neuronal migrational disorder happens between the 10th and 16th gestational week. Nineteen observations (17 girls) are reported in the literature. The filiation with ag…
