Ontogeny of the nasolacrimal duct in primates: functional and phylogenetic implications.

The ontogeny of the nasolacrimal ducts (NLD) and canals (NLC) are investigated in strepsirrhine and haplorhine primates. Developmental serie … he conditions in these two taxa are homologous, and provides additional evidence for a monophyletic Haplorhini. The functional relationship between the nasolacrimal duct and the vomeronasal organ is reviewed in light of this evidence, and it is suggested that these changes in the haplorhine NLD were functionally linked to the development of anatomical haplor …

[Comparative analysis of residual neurovirulence of vaccine and low attenuated rubella virus (Matonaviridae: Rubivirus: Rubella virus) strains in the experiments on the macaque rhesus (Macaca mulatta) monkeys].

INTRODUCTION: Rubella is currently an infection controlled by specific prophylaxis. Not only the right vaccine prophylaxis strategy and tactics, but also the use of effective and safe vaccine preparations is crucial for the elimination of this disease. The aim of the investigation was to study the morphological and pathogenetic patterns of changes developing in the central nervous system (CNS) and internal organs of monkeys (Haplorhini) during intracerebral inoculation with 2 strains of rubella virus (Matonaviridae: Rubivirus: Rubella virus) (RV): highly attenuated Orlov-B, and low attenuated O…

A Middle Eocene Haplorhine Frontal Bone From the Tornillo Basin of Texas, and Its Implications for the Phylogenetic Relationships of Rooneyia and Other Paleogene Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Here we describe a well-preserved primate frontal bone (TMM 46513-1) recovered from Middle Eocene exposures of the Devil's Grave … ontal canal and substantial ventral expansion of the lateral process are features restricted to the Haplorhini among crown primates. The morphological features shared by TMM 46513-1 and Rooneyia suggest that they may be stem haplorhines, but are less consistent with the hypothesis that Rooneyia is a stem anthropoid.

Primate body mass and dietary correlates of tooth root surface area.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine primate postcanine tooth root surface area (TRSA) in the context of two ecological variables (diet an … olivores. Stronger and more frequent dietary signals were observed within Strepsirrhini relative to Haplorhini. This may reflect the constraints of orthognathism within the latter, constraining the adaptability of their postcanine teeth. Finally, because of the strong correlation between TRSA and BM for each tooth locus (mean r2  = 0.82), TRSA can be used to …

Haematology, physiological parameters, morphometry and parasitological status of rescued bearded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus).

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the physiology and haematology of rescued bearded capuchin monkeys. These are necessary to better understand the health and welfare status of the animals, including when performing reintroductions, and to avoid zoonoses. METHODS: We aimed to obtain physiological and haematological values, morphometry and parasitological status of 26 bearded capuchins in two rescue centres in Northeast Brazil. RESULTS: We found sex- and age-related differences in respiratory rate, body weight and body mass index, but not haematology. The haematological values obtained were

Representation of shape, space, and attention in monkey cortex.

Attentional deficits are core to numerous developmental, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. At the single-cell level, much knowledge has been garnered from studies of shape and spatial properties, as well as from numerous demonstrations of attentional modulation of those properties. Despite this wealth of knowledge of single-cell responses across many brain regions, little is known about how these cellular characteristics relate to population level representations and how such representations relate to behavior; in particular, how these cellular responses relate to the representation of
