Endoparasites of rabbits and hares.

Nematode, cestode, protozoan, microsporidian, and pentastomid parasites affect domesticated and wild rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits of the genera Brachylagus, Lepus, Oryctolagus, Pentalagus, and Sylvilagus. Some endoparasite infections are of limited or no significance, whereas others have potentially profound consequences. Accurate identification of endoparasites of rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits is an important facet of the work of veterinary pathologists engaged in lagomorph pathology. Here I review endoparasites from the pathologist's perspective, focusing on pathogenesis, lesions, and i…

Bioactive molecules from sea hares.

Sea hares, belonging to the order Opisthobranchia, subclass Gastropoda, are mollusks that have attracted many researchers who are interested in the chemical defense mechanisms of these soft and "shell-less" snails. Numbers of small molecules of dietary origin have been isolated from sea hares and some have ecologically relevant activities, such as fish deterrent activity or toxicity. Recently, however, greater attention has been paid to biomedically interesting sea hare isolates such as dolastatins, a series of antitumor peptide/macrolides isolated from Dolabella auricularia. Another series of…

Performance and mortality of farmed hares.

Performance and mortality of hares were evaluated for 2 consecutive years in a large farm in Veneto Region (Northern Italy). On average, fertile reproductive pairs (n=318) gave birth 4.8 times and produced 11.4 live leverets, weaned 8.4 leverets and produced 7.0 growing hares (60 days) every year. Mean mortality was 3.6%, 22.9%, 9.7% and 2.5% in newborn (0 to 2 days of age), suckling (3 to 25 days), growing (26 to 60 days) and sub-adult (61 days until sale) hares, respectively. The main causes of mortality were enteric diseases (75.5%, 75.9% and 12.1% in suckling, growing and sub-adult hares, …

[Pathomorphological changes in brucellosis in hares].

The morphology of 645 cases of brucellosis in hares evoked by the germs of Brucella suis, biotype 2, is described. Brucellosis had the character of chronic granulomatous process with prevailing changes in liver, spleen and in sex organs of hares of both sexes. In the sex organs of sexually immature hares the changes were detected in 2.26% of animals. The granuloma macroscopy was typical and was most discernible in liver. In the organs there prevailed solitary granulomas of the pea size. In testes two types of changes were found--coagulation necrosis and granulomatous form. In uterus node congl…

[Differential pathomorphologic diagnosis of brucellosis in hares].

The examination comprised 656 cases of brucellosis, 208 cases of pseudotuberculosis, 31 cases of yersiniosis, 13 cases of tularemia and 120 cases of pasteurellosis. In brucellosis, changes in liver, spleen and sexual organs prevailed. The macroscopy of the changes was typical. A histiocytic granuloma of tuberculoid type was found by histological examination. Owing to caryolysis, the central necrosis of granulomata contained a conspicuously small amount of nuclear detritus, and big cells of Langhans type were found in the histiocytic layer. A layer of round-cell elements constantly occurred on

Protostrongylus pulmonalis from hares (Lepus europaeus) in Italy.

Protostrongylus (Pulmostrongylus) pulmonalis from Lepus europaeus in Italy (Alto Adige) was studied. Most of the parasite population showed the typical morphology described for this species. Variations observed in the morphological features of gubernaculum, antero-lateral ray and telamon are considered to lie within the range of variability of the species. This is the first record of Protostrongylus (Pul.) pulmonalis in hares in Italy.

Powassan virus infection in snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus).

Sera from snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) trapped near Rochester, Alberta, Canada were tested for Powassan virus antibody by the constant virus/serum dilution neutralization test. Of 1264 serum samples tested, 137 had an antibody titer of at least 1:4 for Powassan virus. Ten hares were inoculated with Powassan virus in the laboratory. Viremia lasted 4-5 days and ceased with the appearance of Powassan antibody in the serum. Neutralizing antibody reached a peak titer of 1:119 on day 15 post-inoculation and was still detectable 13 months post-inoculation.

Septicemic listeriosis in wild hares from Saskatchewan, Canada.

The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes causes disease in a wide variety of mammals including rabbits and hares. We describe naturally acquired metritis and septicemic listeriosis in wild female hares from Saskatchewan, Canada. Between April 2012 and July 2013, two white-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii) and a snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) were presented to the Veterinary Medical Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada with nonspecific neurologic signs. The hares were euthanized and autopsied. Necrotizing fibrinosuppurative metritis was present…

Helminth parasites of the invasive European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in Brazil: the first report of Bunostomum trigonocephalum in a hare.

Invasive alien species have the potential to introduce pathogens of economic and health importance in new environments. In Brazil, parasites from the non-native European brown hare can be a threat to humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. Therefore, we aimed to describe the helminth fauna of the invasive European brown hare in three Brazilian states (São Paulo, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul). For this, 90 brown hares were collected and examined for helminths. Helminth specimens recovered were morphologically identified and genetically characterized based on the DNA of male specimens using thr…

Serologic Survey of Snowshoe Hares (Lepus americanus) in the Greater Yellowstone Area for Brucellosis, Tularemia, and Snowshoe Hare Virus.

We examined sera from snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) livetrapped in the northern Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA), US, for antibodies to Brucella abortus, Francisella tularensis, and snowshoe hare virus (SSHV). Zero of 90, 0 of 67, and 40 of 100 samples were antibody positive for B. abortus, F. tularensis, and SSHV, respectively. Hares were trapped from 2009 to 2012, and of the six animals that were captured twice with at least 1 yr between captures, four developed antibody to SSHV, indicating active exposure to the agent. These findings suggest snowshoe hares in the GYA do not play a signifi…

Genotyping of Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica from Hares in Germany.

Francisella tularensis is the causative agent of the zoonotic disease tularemia. In Germany, most human infections are caused by contact with infected hares. The aim of this study was to characterize Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica strains isolated from hares in Germany and to develop bioinformatics tools to analyze their genetic relatedness. In total, 257 German isolates-obtained mainly from hares (n = 233), other vertebrate animals, and ticks, but also from humans (n = 3)-were analyzed within this study. Publically available sequence data from 49 isolates were used to put our isolat…
