Religiosity, psychological resources, and physical health.

Various explanations have been given for the positive association between religiosity and physical health. Using data from two waves of the National Survey of Midlife in the United States (1995, 2005) and retrospective data on the importance of religion in the home in which respondents were raised we find that psychological resources, operationalized by measures of emotional and psychological well-being, mediate the effect of this early exposure to religion but only on self-rated health and physical symptomatology; chronic illnesses and health limitations on activities of daily living are unaf

Resources for oral health in Africa.

Oral health in Africa is often overlooked despite its substantial impact on overall health and well-being. Currently, Africa has a very high prevalence of dental diseases, including untreated dental caries in permanent teeth, severe periodontal disease and oral cancer. Dental human resources are also very low, with dentists ranging from 1.77 to 0.03 per 10,000 population across the continent. The number of technicians also varies across the continent from 0.17 to.0.1 per 10,000 population. Southern Africa has the highest median dental assistants and therapists per 10,000 population ratio (0.2)

How Vanderbilt Health Resources Allied Health Professionals to Alleviate Workforce Shortages.

This article explores allied health professionals in light of persistent and increasing workforce shortages in multiple healthcare roles, along with the growing demand for services, adapting to technological advancements, and evolving patient expectations. While expectations for access, experience, and value increase, the national projections indicate an uneven availability of physicians and nurses. Vanderbilt Health's allied health professionals are a reliable and important asset in the delivery of care and represent a key workforce strategy for health systems. They are also in short supply.A

Canadian Physicians' Attitudes towards Accessing Mental Health Resources.

Despite their rigorous training, studies have shown that physicians experience higher rates of mental illness, substance abuse, and suicide compared to the general population. An online questionnaire was sent to a random sample of physicians across Canada to assess physicians' knowledge of the incidence of mental illness among physicians and their attitudes towards disclosure and treatment in a hypothetical situation where one developed a mental illness. We received 139 responses reflecting mostly primary care physicians and nonsurgical specialists. The majority of respondents underestimated t

[Water resources and health problems in developing countries].

The rapidly increasing use of water for agricultural and hydroelectric development in developing countries is causing serious health problems. These can be divided into two categories; the diseases whose transmission depends on water; and the changes in the life style of the population. We review briefly the principal health problems and analyze the principles to be followed in solving them, and the reasons of the success or failure of health programs. Among the topics we consider, are the development versus health, the collaboration of health service personnel with the rest of the personnel p

Referrals for Food Assistance at Health Resources and Services Administration Health Centers.

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 47 million individuals in the US experience food insecurity. Food insecurity adversely impacts treatment and prevention of diet-related health conditions (DRHCs). Health systems are increasingly screening for food insecurity and referring individuals with food insecurity to food assistance. Many people experiencing food insecurity seek care in Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) health centers. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of referrals to food assistance from HRSA health centers and to examine the demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical char…

Human resources for health development: toward realizing Universal Health Coverage in Japan.

Human resources are an important factor in establishing universal health coverage (UHC). We examined Japan's health policies related to development of human resources for health (HRH) toward establishing UHC, and tried to formulate a model for other countries wanting to introduce UHC through reviewing existing data and documents related to Japan's history in developing HRH. In the results, there were four phases of HRH development in Japan: Phase 1 involved a shortage of HRH; Phase 2 was characterized by rapid production of less-educated HRH; Phase 3 involved introduction of quality improvemen

Resources for hyperhidrosis sufferers, patients, and health care providers.

The excessive sweating of hyperhidrosis creates profound psychosocial, professional, and financial burdens on the individual sufferer; it contributes to impaired self-worth and self-efficacy, decreased satisfaction in all relationships, avoidance of specific careers, and increased expenditures on everything from clothing to medical treatment. Despite morbidity equal to other well-known dermatologic conditions, hyperhidrosis has historically been underacknowledged and undertreated because of the lack of accessible, scientifically accurate information and dispersal of that information within pat

Health Resources Planning Commission regulation of ambulatory surgical care.

Economic and technological factors have combined to encourage the development of freestanding centers where ambulatory surgery is performed. These centers have been highly competitive with hospitals. Over the past five years, there has been pressure to regulate the freestanding centers extensively, primarily through Maryland's Health Resources Planning Commission, which currently has authority to issue Certificates of Need for the development of multispecialty and some single-specialty ambulatory surgery centers. This article reflects the position of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Mary…

Female sexual health digital resources: women and health care providers need more options.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual health and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are usually poorly diagnosed and treated because of the numerous barriers providers and patients face. Internet platforms, such as mobile applications (apps) are potential tools that help overcome these barriers and improve patient access to education and management options for FSD. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to identify existing applications on female sexual health and evaluate their educational content and services. METHODS: We searched the internet and Apple App Store using multiple keywords. A panel of phy

Job demands, resources and mental health in UK prison officers.

BACKGROUND: Research findings indicate that working as a prison officer can be highly stressful, but the aspects of work that predict their mental health status are largely unknown. AIMS: To examine, using elements of the demands-resources model, the extent to which work pressure and several potential resources (i.e. control, support from managers and co-workers, role clarity, effective working relationships and positive change management) predict mental health in a sample of UK prison officers. METHODS: The Health and Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool was used to measure

Determining what matters: data resources for examining maternal health equity.

Maternal morbidity and mortality (MMM) rates in the U.S. are high and increasing, and are disproportionately experienced by understudied, underrepresented, and underreported (U3) populations, especially Black, Indigenous, and/or rural women. Decreasing MMM among U3 women would substantially improve maternal health equity and health outcomes, yet current data limitations inhibit our ability to fully understand the reasons underlying the disparities or regional nuances. This article calls for leveraging diverse, publicly available data such as deidentified health system utilization data; geocode

A Multimetric Evaluation of Online Spanish Health Resources for Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in US Hispanic females. This demographic is more likely to present with later-stage disease and require more extensive surgical treatment, including axillary lymph node dissection, which increases risk of lymphedema. The Spanish-speaking Hispanic population has a lower health literacy level and requires materials contoured to their unique needs. The aim of this study was to evaluate online Spanish lymphedema resources. METHODS: A web search using the Spanish term "linfedema" was performed, and the top 10 websites were identified. Each was

Promoting Health Through Engagement in Occupations That Maximize Food Resources.

Poverty is a complex problem in the United States with far-reaching consequences, often leading to a lack of food or lack of access to food. Proper nutrition and food intake are foundational to health and well-being. This participatory action research (PAR) project explored the challenges associated with living in poverty and managing food resources. Stakeholders engaged in a multiphase PAR process, which resulted in the development and implementation of a 7-wk occupation-based program. The program promotes graded learning of specific skills for managing food resources and emphasizes empowerin
