Horner syndrome.

Horner syndrome is an uncommon but important clinical entity, representing interruption of the sympathetic pathway to the eye and face. Horner syndrome is almost always diagnosed clinically, though pharmacological testing can be used to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging modalities such as PET, CT and MRI are important components of work-up for patients presenting with acquired Horner syndrome. Our patient's presentation with Horner syndrome unmasked the causative superior sulcus squamous cell carcinoma and a coincidental lower lobe adenocarcinoma. Successful radical treatment of these cancers res…

Horner syndrome.

Horner syndrome refers to the constellation of signs resulting from the interruption of sympathetic innervation to the eye and ocular adnexae. Classically, the clinical findings include a triad of ipsilateral blepharoptosis, pupillary miosis, and facial anhidrosis. The history, additional clinical examination features, and pharmacologic testing may help localize the lesion and suggest an etiology. An appropriate evaluation of Horner syndrome and a timely elucidation of the etiology may allow for a potentially life-saving intervention.

[Congenital Horner syndrome].

The authors report a case of congenital Horner's syndrome. Through ophthalmological tests, it is realized a comparative study between a patient with congenital Horner's syndrome and a patient who is a carrier of this syndrome acquired by a cervical sympathectomy. We have come to the conclusion that possibly there is a congenital lesion ea the third sympathetic neuron.

[Traumatic Horner syndrome].

CASE REPORT: We present a case of Horner's syndrome in a 33-year-old man who presented with ptosis and right pupil miosis after cervical trauma. Computed tomography revealed a tender haematoma in the neck, which was producing tracheal deformity and stenosis. DISCUSSION: Cervical trauma may damage the sympathetic pathway and result in Horner's syndrome. This may be a manifestation of a life-threatening condition.

Pediatric Horner syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to define the etiologies of Horner syndrome in the pediatric population. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of the medical records of all pediatric Horner syndrome patients (< 18 years old) examined by the pediatric ophthalmology services at two large referral centers. RESULTS: Seventy-three pediatric Horner syndrome patients were identified. Of these, 31 (42%) were congenital, 11 (15%) were acquired without surgical intervention, and 31 (42%) were acquired after a surgical procedure of the thorax, neck, or central nervous system. Of the…

Horner syndrome: clinical perspectives.

Horner syndrome consists of unilateral ptosis, an ipsilateral miotic but normally reactive pupil, and in some cases, ipsilateral facial anhidrosis, all resulting from damage to the ipsilateral oculosympathetic pathway. Herein, we review the clinical signs and symptoms that can aid in the diagnosis and localization of a Horner syndrome as well as the causes of the condition. We emphasize that pharmacologic testing can confirm its presence and direct further testing and management.
