The hyoid bone is a small horseshoe-shaped bone located between the mandible and the shoulder girdle. It is classified as a sesamoid bone which means it is a freely floating bone. However, it is anything but freely floating. The hyoid bone is a vestigial structure and is found as part of the tongue in lower animal forms. The hyoid bone is attached to the base of the skull, the mandible, the tongue, the larynx, and the scapular belt. Even though the hyoid bone is an important structure, it has not received the attention that it deserves. It participates in the function of speech, respiration, m

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare lesion usually of the long bones, well documented in the literature. It is a cystic, osteolytic vascular tumour, replete with giant cells and fibrous septa, yet devoid of endothelial lining. It has been reported in the larynx and maxillary sinus. This appears to be the first report of an aneurysmal bone cyst occurring in the hyoid bone.

The hyoid contributes to many biomechanical processes including swallowing. Additionally, the hyoid bone has been studied for over a century in an effort to catalog and categorize many observed biometric differences. This has led to the hyoid being a major structure involved in forensic pathology. In this paper, we discuss a very unusual finding of an adult female hyoid bone.

Located at the center of the neck and the pharyngeal column and, thanks to its attachments, tied to the base of the skull, to the mandible, to the tongue, to the larynx, and to the scapular belt, the hyoid bone is intimately related to an extensive tendino-muscular complex. From this strategic position, the hyoid bone participates in all functional and nutritional activities of the oro-facial complex. Heavily involved in the physiology of the pharyngeal column, it appears to enjoy a remarkable stability in relation to its surrounding structures as it participates in the critical process of ver

(1) Background: Secondary tumors of the hyoid bone are extremely rare in clinics. In the literature, there is only one study about hyoid bone metastases from sigmoid adenocarcinoma. (2) Methods: We report a case of hyoid bone metastases in a 78-year-old patient treated for rectum and sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. (3) Results: A mass excision surgery of a rounded osteolytic mass of 4.5 × 3.6 cm in size in the central part of the hyoid bone was performed under general anesthesia, according to the multidisciplinary tumor board recommendation. (4) Conclusions: Hyoid bone metastases can occur in th

Two calves were referred because of ptyalism and difficulty opening the mouth (Calf 1) and for elective umbilical hernia surgery under inhalation anaesthesia (Calf 2). Additional clinical signs were increased breath sounds and swelling in the region of the mandibular angle in Calf 1. Ultrasonography and endoscopy revealed oral inflammation and abscessation in the area of the base of the tongue in both calves. Infection of the hyoid apparatus was suspected based on ultrasonographic findings and confirmed by means of computed tomography. In Calf 1, there was no response to treatment with systemi

Chondrosarcoma is a malignancy of the mesenchymal tissue derived from transformed cells that produce the cartilage matrix. In the neck area, it represents less than 0.5% of malignant tumor pathology. Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone is extremely rare, only 20 cases having been published so far (PubMed 2014). We present the case of a 30-year-old patient from the urban area, admitted in the ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) Emergency Service with inspiratory dyspnea, dysphagia, stomatolalia, with evolutive and progressive clinical history of 2-3 months. Endoscopic examination revealed a pharyngolaryngeal

The hyoid bone, well protected under the protruding chin, seldom sustains fractures in road traffic accidents. We report such a case and review 14 cases found in the world literature.

PURPOSE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a serious complication following radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancers, commonly affecting the mandible, but is less understood when involving the hyoid bone.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A literature review through PubMed and Scopus identified 16 relevant articles. Patient characteristics, presentation, imaging findings, management, and outcomes are highlighted.
RESULTS: The review found 40 cases of hyoid bone ORN, with an average patient age of 60.0 years. Most patients were male (87.5%) and had oropharyngeal tumors (77.5%). The average RT dose was

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: ORN is a postradiation complication that has been well-documented in the medical literature. Most cases in the head and neck have been described in the mandible or larynx. Only a handful of cases in the hyoid bone are documented, all in the clinical literature. Our purpose is to present the clinical and imaging features of ORN involving the hyoid bone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case series of 13 patients with imaging findings highly suggestive of hyoid ORN after radiation therapy for head and neck cancers, in which we observed progressive features of hyoid di

A case of fracture of hyoid bone associated with laceration of the pharynx and producing severe dysphagia is presented. The mechanism of the injury, the diagnosis and treatment policy of this rare condition are highlighted to alert clinicians of the importance of the injury.

INTRODUCTION: Extensive literature exists concerning the etiology and morphology of fractures of the hyoid bone (h.b.) in cases of fatal strangulation. There is an agreement to the effect that fractures are mostly located within the distal third of the cornua majora (c.m.). Although several predictors have been described very accurately, the fracture analysis has neither been based on the osseous construction nor on the stress distribution of the c.m. under strangulation resulting from the configuration and its details. This especially applies to the apex of the distal ends of the big horns, t

Hyoid bone syndrome is a type of cervicofacial pain that is caused by degeneration of the greater cornu of the hyoid at the attachment of the stylohyoid ligament. We report four patients who presented with deep-seated, dull, aching, temporomandibular (TMJ) pain that radiated from the greater cornu of the hyoid bone and did not respond to conservative management. Diagnostic tests included a local anaesthetic block and digital palpation of the greater cornu of the hyoid bone. All four patients responded well to methylprednisolone 40 mg/ml at the greater cornu of the hyoid bone, which resulted in

The objective of this study is to assess complete removal of the thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) and its tract(s) to the base of the tongue with sparing of the hyoid bone. This is a prospective cohort study. Tertiary hospital (Zagazig university hospital). This prospective study was carried out on 21 patients who had been diagnosed preoperatively as TGDC or fistula. All patients were managed by dissection and removal of the TGDC and its tract(s) to the base of the tongue with sparing of the hyoid bone. The study was conducted on 12 males (57.14 %) and 9 females (42.85 %) with mean age 6.8 years

Hyoid bone elongation is an uncommon cause of stroke. Here, we report a case of hyoid bone elongation causing localized trauma to the internal carotid artery, resulting in multiple strokes. A 32-year-old woman presented with unilateral weakness and history of a recent stroke. Imaging revealed the greater horn of the hyoid bone extending between the external and internal carotid with associated thrombus at the carotid bifurcation and acute stroke. Carotid ultrasound demonstrated movement of the hyoid bone in and out of the space between the external carotid artery and internal carotid artery wi

PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis of the hyoid bone is an uncommon disease that has only been described occasionally in the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report 3 cases of osteonecrosis of the hyoid bone after radiation therapy for carcinoma at various sites in the head and neck region.
RESULTS: Imaging computed tomography (CT) scans were performed for all 3 cases and did aid in the diagnosis. In 1 case, a 201thallium scintigraphy and a bone scan (99mtechnetium-diphosphonate) were performed and this confirmed the diagnosis of osteoradionecrosis.
CONCLUSION: Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone
