Dermatophytes in Iceland.

Prior to 1982, no reliable information was available on prevailing dermatophyte species or infections in Iceland. In 1983-1984 fungal cultures performed on 96 patients revealed that Trichophyton tonsurans was the most common isolate, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. There were no cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis was rare, but the most common sites of infection were the feet and toenails.

[Hepatitis A in Iceland].

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) epidemics occurred repeatedly in Iceland in the early 20th century, but since then few cases have been reported and no epidemics since 1952. The latest Icelandic studies on HAV from around 1990 showed low incidence of infection and de-- creasing prevalence of antibodies. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence, clinical presentation and origin of HAV, abroad or in Iceland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective search was undertaken on all patients with positive anti-HAV IgM during the 11 years period of 2006-2016 in the virological data…

Forensic psychology in Iceland: a survey of members of the Icelandic Psychological Society.

Forensic psychology is a rapidly growing specialism within psychology. A survey was carried out among the 152 members of the Icelandic Psychological Society (Sálfradingafélagi Islands) about their involvement and role in court work. Out of 101 psychologists who responded to the survey, 39 reported having been involved in court work, of whom 34 had testified in court. The great majority of court work of the psychologists involved assessments relating to child-care and custody proceedings, but there was evidence that Icelandic psychologists are increasingly becoming involved in criminal cases co…

EUPopLink Country report - Iceland.

This paper explores the unique nature and evolution of Euroscepticism in Iceland, which originates not from contemporary identity politics but from a deeply embedded national ideology prioritising sovereignty and democratic control over natural resources. Historically, Iceland's relationship with Europe has been defined by a dual imperative: seeking economic prosperity through integration mechanisms like the European Economic Area, while fiercely protecting its hard-won political autonomy by resisting full European Union membership. The study examines the multiparty political landscape, demons…

[Phenylketonuria (PKU) in Iceland].

INTRODUCTION: PKU is a metabolic disorder caused by a mutation in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene. Icelandic neonatal screening for PKU started in 1972. The mutation causes a variable [corrected] dysfunction in PAH, that metabolizes phenylalanine (Phe) to tyrosine (Tyr) with the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4). Accumulation of Phe causes mental retardation and seizures. Current therapy focuses on Phe-restrictive diet and newer methods like BH4 in large doses. The primary aim was to collect data about PKU in Iceland and evaluate therapy and screening. Additional focus was on BH4 the…

[Tuberculosis in Iceland. 1976].

Because of signs of tuberculous lesions in old skeletons it can be stated with certainty that tuberculosis has occurred in the country short … tal city, Reykjavík, the attendance was 99.32 percent. The course and prevalence of tuberculosis in Iceland from 1911 to 1970 are traced on the basis of tuberculosis reporting registers, mortality records which were ordered by law in 1911, tuberculin surveys and post mortem examinations. The deficiencies of these sources are pointed out. Since 1939 the mo …

[Insect hypersensitivity in Iceland.].

In this article we review allergic reactions to stinging insects (hymenoptera) and biting insects (mosquitoes). We describe the first proven case of sensitization and anaphylaxis to hymenoptera in an Icelander. Yellow jackets, honeybees, paper wasps and hornets cause most sting reactions. The vespidae species were first seen in Iceland in 1973. Since that time, these insects have inhabited the island in ever increasing numbers. Symptoms range from local reactions to systemic anaphylaxis and even death. Accurate diagnosis is important as treatment with venom immunotherapy can prevent repeated r…

[Marfan's syndrome in Iceland.].

Marfan's syndrome is a heritable collagen disorder manifested by defects in the ocular, skeletal and cardiovascular systems. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. The objectives of this study were to study the prevalence and clinical presentation of Marfan's syndrome in Iceland. We assessed the records of patients diagnosed with Marfan's syndrome during the years 1989-94 at all the major hospitals in Iceland. Hospital cardiologists, pediatricians and ophthalmologists gave valuable information, as did some general practitioners. All patients who agreed to participate were evaluated by…

Intradermal challenge of Icelandic horses in Norway and Iceland with extracts of Culicoides spp.

A skin test survey was carried out in Icelandic horses in Norway and Iceland using extracts of Culicoides spp. as antigen. Eleven horses with recurrent seasonal dermatitis reacted with an immediate hypersensitivity response to intradermal challenge with antigen. All except one of thirty-three clinically normal horses in Norway showed a negative response in skin tests. These findings indicate that Culicoides spp. may be the major cause of the disease in Norway. Only one of the 110 horses tested in Iceland showed any skin test reaction (weak), demonstrating that the horses were not sensitized to…

[Sarcoidosis in Iceland 1981-2003].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of sarcoidosis in Iceland, its clinical manifestations and potential environmental influences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All histopathological diagnoses of non-necrotizing granulomas generated in Iceland during the period 1981-2003 were reviewed with respect to a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Further, patients were identified by searching hospital discharge diagnoses at the University Hospital in Reykjavik and the Regional Hospital in Northern Iceland. Only histologically verified cases were included. RESULTS: A total of 235 patients were found with histopath…

[Swimmer's itch in Landmannalaugar, Iceland].

Swimmer's itch (SI) or human cercarial dermatitis is caused by free-swimming larvae of bird parasites of the family Schistosomatidae (Trematoda) which have penetrated thorough the skin. Sometimes, mainly during first infections, the larvae do not cause any symptoms but if trapped by the immune system of the host each larva causes a maculopapular eruption. So far, five bird schistosome species have been reported in Iceland. Cercariae are shed by the freshwater snail Radix peregra but adults live in anseriform birds; one nasal Trichobilharzia species occurs in the nasal cavity of mallards, two v…

Salmonella in sheep in Iceland.

In 1995 several outbreaks of food poisoning in humans occurred in Iceland, that were traced to salmonella contamination of singed sheep heads. This prompted us to study the prevalence of salmonella infection in sheep and to trace where and how infection might have occurred. Faecal, intestinal contents and tonsillar samples were collected in the spring and autumn from sheep on 50 farms in the southwestern part of the country, where salmonellosis had been detected and from 5 farms in the northwestern part of the country. All faecal samples from the southwest were negative, whereas samples from 3…

Prevalence of autism in Iceland.

This clinic-based study estimated the prevalence of autism in Iceland in two consecutive birth cohorts, subjects born in 1974-1983 and in 1984-1993. In the older cohort classification was based on the ICD-9 in 72% of cases while in the younger cohort 89% of cases were classified according to the ICD-10. Estimated prevalence rates for Infantile autism/Childhood autism were 3.8 per 10,000 in the older cohort and 8.6 per 10,000 in the younger cohort. The characteristics of the autistic groups are presented in terms of level of intelligence, male:female ratio, and age at diagnosis. For the younger…
