OBJECTIVE: To determine if urinary tract infection, high blood pressure and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are underdiagnosed when prenatal urine testing is done on a clinically indicated vs. routine basis.
STUDY DESIGN: Prenatal and delivery records of 2,981 subjects were reviewed in a predominantly Hispanic and medically underserved population. Patients prior to August 2002 received routine urine screening. After August 2002, women were tested only if preestablished criteria were present.

The practical implementation of new immunohistochemical reagents and equipment requires validation in the each pathology department of a medical institution performing intravital diagnostics. This article presents the validation results for reagents and an immunostainer, which required optimizing certain parameters. This enabled reproducible results to those performed using conventional instrument platforms and routine reagents.

The influence of ascorbic acid on commercial rapid diagnostic tests for glucosuria is demonstrated in vitro. Although much work has been done to stabilize the tests against such interference, and although manufacturers of tests trips declare their products now to be fairly stable against ascorbic acid 'at higher glucose levels', all the investigated commercial rapid diagnostic tests for glucose at the lower pathological range of glucosuria were substantially influenced by ascorbic acid at potentially physiological concentrations.
