Infestations, Bites, and Insect Repellents.

Infestations and arthropod bite reactions in children are common reasons for presentation to pediatric health care providers. Infestations in children include head lice, scabies, and other mites. Fleas and bed bugs are common causes of bite reactions in children, and papular urticaria is a chronic, recurrent eruption resulting from delayed hypersensitivity to a variety of insect bites. Both infestations and bite reactions may result in severe pruritus with associated sleep disturbance and can be a source of significant distress for patients and families. In this review, we discuss infestations

Insect repellents: historical perspectives and new developments.

Arthropod bites remain a major cause of patient morbidity. These bites can cause local or systemic effects that may be infectious or inflammatory in nature. Arthropods, notably insects and arachnids, are vectors of potentially serious ailments including malaria, West Nile virus, dengue, and Lyme disease. Measures to curtail the impact of insect bites are important in the worldwide public health effort to safely protect patients and prevent the spread of disease. The history of insect repellent (IR) lends insight into some of the current scientific strategies behind newer products. Active ingre

Insect repellents: An updated review for the clinician.

Malaria, Zika virus, West Nile virus, Dengue fever, and Lyme disease are common causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. While arthropod bites may cause local inflammation and discomfort, a greater concern is the potential to develop deadly systemic infection. The use of insect repellents (IRs) to prevent systemic infections constitutes a fundamental public health effort. Cost effectiveness, availability, and high efficacy against arthropod vectors are key characteristics of an ideal IR. Currently, numerous IRs are available on the market, with N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) b…

Trends in insect repellent formulations: A review.

The use of natural and synthetic repellents, marketed in different pharmaceutical forms, is growing in the world due to the emerging vector-borne viral diseases as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever and Malaria. The choice of the ideal formulation will depend on a series of factors to be analyzed: type of repellent active (natural or synthetic), pharmaceutical forms (spray, lotion, cream, gel), action time duration (short or long), environment of exposure and the user (adult, pregnant women, children, newborn). The most used repellents are DEET, IR3535 (Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropionate) (

Diethyltoluamide (DEET) insect repellent toxicosis.

Poisonings resulting from DEET are rarely encountered in companion animals. In human patients, DEET toxicosis has been associated with the development of a toxic encephalopathy characterized by tremors, seizures, behavioral changes, and abnormal movements. Generally, DEET toxicosis in companion animals is of short duration and is characterized by vomiting, tremors, ataxia, and excitation. Treatment for DEET toxicosis includes symptomatic therapy and decontamination.

Sustainable manufacture of insect repellents derived from Nepeta cataria.

Malaria devastates sub-Saharan Africa; the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 212 million people contract malaria annually and that the plasmodium virus will kill 419 000 in 2017. The disease affects rural populations who have the least economic means to fight it. Impregnated mosquito nets have reduced the mortality rate but the Anopheles mosquitoes are changing their feeding patterns and have become more active at dusk and early morning rather than after 22h00 as an adaptation to the nets. Everyone is susceptible to the Anopheles at these times but infants and pregnant women are t

Chemical and Plant-Based Insect Repellents: Efficacy, Safety, and Toxicity.

Most emerging infectious diseases today are arthropod-borne and cannot be prevented by vaccinations. Because insect repellents offer important topical barriers of personal protection from arthropod-borne infectious diseases, the main objectives of this article were to describe the growing threats to public health from emerging arthropod-borne infectious diseases, to define the differences between insect repellents and insecticides, and to compare the efficacies and toxicities of chemical and plant-derived insect repellents. Internet search engines were queried with key words to identify scient…

Use of biocides and insect repellents and risk of hypospadias.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the use of biocides and insect repellents and the risk of hypospadias was examined in a large case-control study in the South East of England. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out among 471 cases of hypospadias referred to surgeons, and 490 randomly selected population-based controls, born between 1 January 1997 and 30 September 1998. Telephone interviews were conducted between September 2000 and March 2003. The questionnaire included information on demographic, lifestyle and environmental factors, including the use of biocides and insect repellen…

Toxic encephalopathy in a child after brief exposure to insect repellents.

Seizures and acute behaviour change developed in an 8-year-old girl following exposure to Muskol and Off insect repellents. She recovered within 3 days with supportive treatment, including anticonvulsant medication. The assumed toxic agent was N,N-diethyltoluamide.

Insect repellents and contact urticaria: differential response to DEET and picaridin.

Topical insect repellent is commonly used throughout the world. Active ingredients typically include N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) or pi … or 5% picaridin and 5% picaridin in ethanol were negative. Based on these results, we conclude that insect repellents containing picaridin may be acceptable alternatives in patients who demonstrate sensitivity to products containing DEET.

Insect repellents and associated personal protection for a reduction in human disease.

Personal protection measures against biting arthropods include topical insect repellents, area repellents, insecticide-treated bednets and treated clothing. The literature on the effectiveness of personal protection products against arthropods is mainly limited to studies of prevention of bites, rather than prevention of disease. Tungiasis was successfully controlled by application of topical repellents and scrub typhus was reduced through the use of treated clothing. Successful reduction of leishmaniasis was achieved through the use of topical repellents, treated bednets and treated clothing …
