It is demonstrated that IgG fractions with isoelectric points above 7.6, isolated from pooled syphilitic sera, are able to elevate the thymol turbidity. The effect increases with increasing isoelectric points of the isolated fraction. IgG from individual syphilitic patients exerts a stronger effect on the thymol turbidity than normal IgG. It is concluded that elevated amounts of these basic immunoglobulins are present in the sera of syphilitic subjects.

Pathogenic autoantibodies from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may represent a relatively cationic fraction of IgG. We compared the spectrotype distributions of affinity-purified IgG from the sera of 10 SLE patients and 10 age- and sex-matched control subjects. 1. By isoelectric focusing in 8 M urea, spectrin purified from normal human erythrocytes was resolved into 12 to 15 peptide bands differing by their isoelectric point. Most of them were focused between pH 6.4 and 5.2, one at pH 8.7 and some minor components between pH 7.4 and 6.8. 2. The results were not influenced by the erythrocyte population age. 3. Spectrin purified from erythrocytes of five patients with hereditary spherocytosis gave similar isoelectric focusing patterns, with the exception of the lack of the pH 8.7-focused component in two related patients.

A placental type of membrane-bound arylamidase was detected in serum and ascites from a patient with renal cell carcinoma by isoelectric focusing. The enzyme had the same molecular weight, electrophoretic mobility on polyacrylamide gel, isoelectric point and KM value as placental membrane-bound arylamidase. The new type of membrane-bound arylamidase was named Shiba-isoenzyme after the patient's name.
