Patients with pretibial lacerations are commonly referred to plastic surgery services for operative intervention. However, the vast majority of cases can be managed conservatively. Through understanding the epidemiology and pathophysiology underlying these injuries to appropriately assessing and managing these patients, this review demonstrates how best to facilitate wound healing and undertake conservative management. Early and appropriate therapy for tendon lacerations can result in a sound, athletic horse in more than 50% of cases. Extensor tendon lacerations have a better prognosis and wound care, immobilization, and protection from flexor dominance are the goals of therapy. Flexor tendon lacerations are more serious because of the loss of support to the limb. Therapy goals include wound care, tendon suturing, and strict immobilization for approximately 6 weeks. This article describes management of horses with tendon lacerations and the outcomes in detail.

We have reviewed the literature on third and fourth degree perineal lacerations, with respect to occurrence, risk factors, repair, short and long term morbidity, and secondary treatment. Suggestions of delivery procedures aiming to reduce the extent of perineal trauma are given. The long term sequelae of severe lacerations are clearly underestimated.

Contact lenses were fit after traumatic corneal lacerations in 30 eyes (28 patients). Twenty-eight of the eyes (93%) were aphakic. Twenty-two of the 30 eyes (73%) wore the contact lens successfully (average follow-up 22 months). The visual acuity with the contact lens was 20/40 or better in 25 eyes (83%). An extensive search of the English and foreign language literature yields clinical reports on only 87 patients with open injuries of various tendons about the foot and ankle. This retrospective review is presented to document case histories in 80 additional patients, to present the results of 46 patients, and to assess the treatment recommendations outlined in the literature.

We treated twenty six patients with thirty four partial tendon lacerations by not suturing the tendons and by early mobilization of the digit. These partial tendon lacerations varied from 25 to 95 per cent of the cross sectional area. The mean and median cross-sectional area lacerated was 60 per cent. Twenty three of these patients obtained excellent function, one patient obtained good to excellent function and one patient obtained fair function. One patient was lost to follow-up.
