Leeches in the larynx.

This is a report of two patients with leech inhalation. The first patient presented with severe attacks of inspiratory stridor, cyanosis and cough of five days duration. He had no fever. Indirect laryngoscopy revealed a black, smooth foreign body between the vocal folds. Lateral soft tissue X-ray of the neck revealed shadow involving the glottic and the subglottic areas of the larynx. Laryngoscopy under general anaesthesia showed a living leech. This was removed and the patient improved. The second patient presented with difficulty of breathing, dysphagia, and spitting of blood of two weeks du

[Epistaxis caused by leeches].

Among the conditions which can cause epistaxis are intranasal or nasopharyngeal foreign bodies. A living foreign body, or parasite, in the nose or nasopharynx is rare in western countries, but in other parts of the world is a fairly common cause of epistaxis. In the past 5 years 17 cases of epistaxis due to infestation with leeches were treated in our 2 departments. In 14 patients, 9-27 years old, the complaint was of recurrent episodes of mild epistaxis and blood-spitting several days before admission. 3 patients were admitted hemorrhaging profusely from the nose and mouth. Examination showed

Postingestive chemosensation and feeding by leeches.

Distinct chemical cues acting on chemosensory structures on the dorsal lip of bloodsucking leeches activate the entire complement of appetitive and ingestive feeding behaviors. However, it is not known whether the maintenance of ingestion depends on continuous stimulation of these peripheral chemosensors. Leeches of the species Hirudo medicinalis and Macrobdella decora were fed for 2 min on an artificial blood solution containing 150 mM NaCl/1 mM arginine before switching the feeding solution to various experimental mixtures. Leeches did not start to feed on, but continued to ingest solutions

[Leeches of the upper aerodigestive tract].

INTRODUCTION: The leech is an aquatic worm living in fresh water, especially in tropical areas. It may be found exceptionally in the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) after consumption of spring water or water from natural wells, after swimming in still waters (lakes and dams). The author's objective was to study epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic, and evolutive aspects of this infestation. PATIENT AND METHODS: This prospective 2-year study was carried out from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008. We included all patients consulting at the emergency unit presenting with leeches in the UAD

Meningococcal purpura fulminans treated with medicinal leeches.

INTRODUCTION: Meningococcal septicemia remains one of the most common infectious causes of admission to a pediatric intensive care unit. Numerous treatment strategies aimed at the thromboembolic complications inducing purpura fulminans and limb/digital ischemia have been attempted, with variable results. The successful use of medicinal leeches for pneumococcal purpura fulminans has been described, and we present a similar case of meningococcal purpura fulminans. PATIENT AND INTERVENTION: A 5-wk-old female infant with meningococcal meningitis and septicemia and progressive purpura fulminans of

The use of medicinal leeches in microsurgery.

Medicinal leeches have been used to treat a variety of ailments for thousands of years. During the past decade the leech has become valuable for salvaging surgically uncorrectable venous insufficiency which is occasionally encountered after microsurgical free flap and replantation procedures. Leech anatomy and physiology are reviewed. Indications and the technique for application of medicinal leeches is discussed, as well as potential complications of leeching.

Nasal leech infestation: report of seven leeches and literature review.

Nasal leech infestation rarely occurs in society today and it is usually reported as an anecdote. In this study, we present seven nasal leeches in six patients from 1984 to 2008. All patients initially presented with epistaxis. Four patients were less than 8 years old and two patients were older than 60 years old. All patients had spent time in rural streams 2 weeks to 2 months before the symptoms occurred. All of the seven leeches were removed smoothly and one leech migrated to the oropharynx during the operation. The length of the leeches ranged from 2 to 12 cm with an average length of 4.6

Nasal leeches and epistaxis: A case series.

Nasal hirudiniasis is uncommon in humans, where a leech invades through the nostrils, adhering to the nasal cavity mucosa. It is rare in urban areas, noted in endemic rural areas, but scarcely documented and, with urbanisation and ecological imbalance has become rarer still. It presents with recurrent epistaxis due to hirudin released by the leech while other symptoms are infinitesimal owing to an analgesic enzyme secreted. A thorough history-taking and examination is of utmost importance as respiratory complications may arise if the leech invades the airways. We present a case series of five

[Unavoidable epistaxis in the nasal infestation of leeches].

An adult man is presented with a case of epistaxis due to leech (Limnatis linotica) intranasal parasitation. The geographical area where infection was performed is in the province of Teruel, northwest Spain. The only presented symptom was an incoercible nasal haemorrhage with low flow which didn't cease by anterior tamponade. 7 days after the process began he was heeded at the Emergency Service, Alcañiz Hospital, where the exam of left nasal fossa showed the presence of a olive-green long mass, very mobile. The treatment consisted on the leech extraction with a dissection forceps. Haemorrhage

Ocular leech infestation.

This case report describes a female toddler with manifestations of ocular leech infestation. A 2-year-old girl was brought to our outpatient clinic with a complaint of irritable crying after being taken to a stream in Hualien 1 day previous, where she played in the water. The parents noticed that she rubbed her right eye a lot. Upon examination, the girl had good fix and follow in either eye. Slit-lamp examination showed conjunctival injection with a moving dark black-brown foreign body partly attached in the lower conjunctiva. After applying topical anesthetics, the leech, measuring 1 cm in l

Leech on the eye in a child.

PURPOSE: to present the case of a 4-year-old girl with leech infestation of the ocular surface. DESIGN: observational case report. RESULTS: a 4-year-old girl presented with a two-day history of bleeding from the left eye. Examination under anesthesia revealed a leech adhering to the cornea and bulbar conjunctiva. Irrigation with normal saline released the leech from the conjunctiva. Detaching from the cornea was successful after injection of suxamethonium 50 mg/ml into the worm. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of leech infestation need to be considered in the differential diagnosis of open-glo

Cutaneous lymphoid hyperplasia induced by Hirudo medicinalis (leeches).

For centuries, Hirudo medicinalis (medicinal leech) has been used as a remedy to treat many discomforts, such as muscle and joint pain. Nowadays, using leech in reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, wound and flap healing, venous insufficiency, varicosities and many other disorders has increased. In this study, we report a 45 year old female patient with six pruritic papules on her legs since10 months ago that appeared about 4 weeks after one session of leech application. Skin biopsy was performed on one of the papules, and in histopathology, superficial ulceration with a dense superficial and

Stretch receptors and body wall muscle in leeches.

1. A new kind of muscle receptor has been described in the medicinal leech, the first stretch receptor in a soft-bodied invertebrate to be identified and characterized. 2. The sensory responses to stretch in these receptors are different from those of other more well known muscle receptors such as vertebrate spindles or crustacean stretch receptors. 3. The leech receptors provide the sensory innervation for the tubular muscle layers of the body wall, and they respond to stretch of the muscle with hyperpolarizing potentials that are conducted passively to the CNS. 4. This review summarizes thei

The use of leeches in distal digital replantation.

Over the past 18 years we have operated on 50 patients who had sustained distal amputation of fingers. Their average age was 30 years (range 2-72 years). Replantation of radial digits on the right hand was most common and the thumb was involved in nearly half the cases in our series. Out of the 50 cases we were able to repair both arteries in 35 patients and only one artery in the other 15. Regarding veins, two were anastomosed in 12, only one in 23 and none in 15 because of the severity of the contusion or the very distal site of replantation. Although early arterial thrombosis usually leaves

Nasal Leech in a Child.

The common causes of epistaxis in children are mostly local mucosal dryness, trauma, or inflammation, while epistaxis caused by leech infestation is clinically rare and easily overlooked. This article reports a case of epistaxis in a child due to leeches and, combined with a literature review, analyzes its clinical characteristics and key points of diagnosis and treatment. Children often present with recurrent unilateral epistaxis, nasal obstruction, and a feeling of insect crawling, and most have a history of exposure to natural water. The diagnosis of epistaxis due to nasal hirudiniasis main
