The myometrium, like all tissues, is home to a cadre of different kinds of leukocytes. As with other tissues, these leukocytes are presumed to contribute not only to host defense, but also to tissue remodeling and repair. The contributions of leukocytes to the specialized functions of the myometrium, however, remain almost unknown. Here, we provide an overview on this understudied aspect of myometrial physiology, with special emphasis on the potential role of myometrial leukocytes in pregnancy and parturition.

Radiolabeled blood cells are widely used for both clinical and research studies. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown the tagging process does not significantly affect function. The labeling techniques and clinical uses of labeled leukocytes and platelets are reviewed.

Knowledge regarding the immune activity of lymphocytes is quite recent. Polymorphonuclear phagocytosis was described about a century ago, but subdivision of lymphocytes into T and B cells dates back only two decades. Pathophysiologic observations on lymphocytes in the course of infectious mononucleosis have been a source of extremely interesting data. Recognizing different T lymphocyte subsets has enormously enriched knowledge of their functional activities, while the contribution of morphological studies has been very limited.

Isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocytes were found to contain two distinct superoxide dismutases, electrophoretically identical to the superoxide dismutases found in other human tissues.
