Perforated Meckel diverticulum.

Perforation of a Meckel diverticulum (MD) is a rare complication that can often mimic appendicitis. This case report identifies a child who presented to our Emergency Department (ED) with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, free fluid and air in the abdomen and pelvis, and inflammatory changes visualized on Ultrasonography (US) and computer tomography (CT) scan. In our patient, ruptured appendicitis was suspected, and the diagnosis of ruptured MD was ultimately made by laparoscopy. This case demonstrates that a healthy degree of suspicion for complicated MD should be present when dealing with…

Meckel diverticulum revisited.

Nine cases of Meckel diverticulum seen over a period of four years are presented. Six presented with gangrene, perforation, intestinal obstruction, intraabdominal abscess and pain related to Meckel diverticulum. The remaining three were incidental findings. Seven of the patients were males and two females. Average age of the patients was 25.5 years. The paper reaffirms the well-known practice that Meckel diverticulum should be looked for at laparotomies and resected when seen.

Enterovesical Fistula From Meckel Diverticulum.

Meckel diverticulum is a common congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract and can cause complications such as ulceration, hemorrhage, intussusception, and perforation. This report describes a very rare complication of an enterovesical fistula associated with chronic Meckel diverticulum. A 51-year-old male presented with over 10 years of persistent pyuria. Tests were performed to rule out malignancy, including serum prostate-specific antigen level, urine cytology, bacterial culture, cystoscopy, and bladder computed tomography. An enterovesical fistula was identified, and laparoscopi…

Meckel diverticulum in exomphalos minor.

A congenital hernia into the base of the umbilical cord is known as an exomphalos and when the size of the defect is 5 cm or less and containing only bowel, it is called as exomphalos minor. We present a case of a newborn with an exomphalos minor within a Meckel diverticulum. He underwent surgical resection of the Meckel diverticulum and repair of the abdominal wall defect. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Meckel diverticulum in an exomphalos minor in Korea.

Meckel Diverticulum Causing Intestinal Volvulus.

Intestinal volvulus is rare and responsible for upper bowel obstruction. They occur more frequently in a patient with abdominal surgery history. We report a case of small intestine volvulus on Meckel diverticulum, which occurred in a 21-year-old patient, with no history of laparotomy. The diagnosis confirmation was intraoperative, and the management consisted in a segmental resection of the small intestine with immediate anastomosis. The postoperative follow-up was good. This case underlines the scarcity and the severity of this presentation which therefore requires appropriate care in order t…

Recognizing and treating Meckel diverticulum.

Meckel diverticulum is an uncommon congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that usually remains asymptomatic throughout a patient's lifetime. However, these diverticula can cause complications such as GI bleeding and small bowel obstruction; complications occur mostly in children and are rare in adults. This article reviews the presentation, complications, and treatment options for symptomatic and incidentally found Meckel diverticula.
