INTRODUCTION: Floating membranes are epiretinal membranes that spontaneously detach from the retina and float in the vitreous cavity.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We studied a series of nine patients with a spontaneous separation of a premacular membrane. The majority of these detached membranes were secondary to vitreomacular traction syndrome. In four patients, the presence of peripheral retinal tears treated in the past by laser photocoagulation were found. None of the patients had complete vitreoretinal detachment before progressing to floating membranes.

Pupillary membranes are very commonly found on routine microscopic examination of the anterior segment and are usually of no clinical significance. We describe a 4-year-old child with grossly enlarged pupillary membranes that formed a mesh-like arc over the entire pupillary aperture in both eyes. Although these membranous strands were very prominent, the child had normal visual acuity.

Extensive persistent pupillary membranes which occlude the pupil may occur in isolation or in association with other ocular anomalies. Amblyopia may result if the membranes are extensive. In this chapter, we describe standardized protocols for the self-assembly of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) from liposomes with lipid compositions mimicking eukaryote and prokaryote cell membranes. Such SLBs can also contain lipids with polymeric and glycosylated headgroups. Furthermore, we present protocols on how to manipulate the adsorption and desorption of membranes on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which allows for the creation of patterned and in situ regenerated SLB arrays that can be used to study electrochemically mediated membrane processes in a microarray format.

A hallmark of Huntington's disease is the presence of intracellular aggregates of mutant huntingtin, the pathological significance of which has long been debated. Using cryo-electron tomography, Bauerlein et al. reveal the fibrillary structure of huntingtin aggregates in situ and show that huntingtin fibrils interact with the endoplasmic reticulum, distorting its morphology and dynamics.

Retrocorneal membranes can be composed from one layer only -- endothelium, or two layers: endothelium and Descemet, or three layers: endothelium, Descemet membrane and corneal stroma. Besides those corneal membranes which may occur after keratoplasty there are also other forms of inflammatory, degenerative, traumatic or genetic origin. Because diminished corneal transparency often occurs in those cases the precise diagnosis may be difficult on clinical investigation, often only after histological examination the membrane structure may be established.
