Evaluation of microvascular density in Barrett's associated neoplasia.

Angiogenesis has an important role in the carcinogenesis of esophageal adenocarcinoma, however, the diagnostic and prognostic utility of microvascular density counts have not been clinically established. The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between microvascular density and disease progression of non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus, low-grade dysplasia, high-grade dysplasia and invasive carcinoma in the superficial aspects of the tissue. Archival histological specimens from two referral centers for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer were selected for review. A total of 160

Quantifying Pulmonary Microvascular Density in Mice Across Lobules.

The abnormal alternation of pulmonary angiogenesis is related to lung microvascular dysfunction and is deeply linked to vascular wall integrity, blood flow regulation, and gas exchange. In murine models, lung lobes exhibit significant differences in size, shape, location, and vascularization, yet existing methods lack consideration for these variations when quantifying microvascular density. This limitation hinders the comprehensive study of lung microvascular dysfunction and the potential remodeling of microvasculature circulation across different lobules. Our protocol addresses this gap by e

Tumor Microenvironment and Microvascular Density in Human Glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a very aggressive form of cancer affecting the central nervous system. Although it occurs almost exclusively in the brain, glioblastoma can also appear in the brainstem, cerebellum, and spinal cord. It is characterized by high rates of proliferation, invasion, and necrosis. Moreover, GBM is a highly vascularized tumor and presents resistance to therapy. Recent data indicate that GBM cells are surrounded by a microenvironment (TME) which includes a complex network constituted of cellular/extracellular components and vessels able to influence both tumor growth and angiogene

Tumor Microenvironment and Microvascular Density in Follicular Lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a slowly progressive disease and constitutes the second most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Biological factors, such as the tumor microenvironment and the host response, are determinants in the outcome of FL but the experimental data about microenvironment and tumor cells in FL are variable and contradictory. In this morphometric study, we analyzed by immunohistochemistry the cellular components of the tumor microenvironment and correlated these data with the microvascular vascular density in three different grades of FL lymph node biopsies, comparing the results to h

Role of microvascular density in nonlocalizing parathyroid sestamibi scans.

OBJECTIVES: Sestamibi scans for localization of abnormal parathyroid glands in patients with hyperparathyroidism are widely used at many institutions. Minimally invasive parathyroid surgery demands accurate preoperative localization imaging; however, nonlocalizing sestamibi scans occur in 15% of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. It remains unknown why some sestamibi scans fail to localize. We hypothesize that an increase in microvascular density (MVD) within an adenoma will result in rapid tracer washout and a subsequent nonlocalizing scan. This study investigates the role of MVD in s

Macular Microvascular Density as a Diagnostic Biomarker for Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Some previous studies showed abnormal pathological and vascular changes in the retina of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, whether retinal microvascular density is a diagnostic indicator for AD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the macular vessel density (m-VD) in the superficial capillary plexus and fovea avascular zone (FAZ) area in AD, explored their correlations with clinical parameters, and finally confirmed an optimal machine learning model for AD diagnosis. METHODS: 77 patients with AD and 145 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The m-VD and

Correlation between NGF/TrkA and microvascular density in human pterygium.

Pterygium is a surface ocular lesion that is associated with chronic UV exposure. The primary effect is a solar actinic elastosis within the stroma. All the other changes are secondary. Pterygium is characterized by proliferation, inflammatory infiltrates, fibrosis, angiogenesis and extracellular matrix breakdown. The aim of this study was to correlate microvascular density and nerve growth factor (NGF)/NGF-receptor transmembrane tyrosine kinase (TrkA) expression in endothelial cells in human pterygium. Specimens of human pterygium obtained from 30 patients who had undergone surgical excision

Intratumoral microvascular density in malignant lymphomas of B-cell origin.

Sections of surgical lymph-node biopsies of four types of malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of B-cell origin (B-NHL) classified according to the R.E.A.L. terminology or lymphadenitis were immunostained in order to demonstrate endothelial CD34 (QBEnd 10) and to determine the microvascular density and vessel-size distribution using an interactive image-analysis technique. Only microvessels displaying a cross-sectional area corresponding to a diameter of between 3.2 and 34.6 microm were included. The intratumoral microvascular density (iMVD) was found to be significantly higher in chronic lymphati

Relationship between mast cell density and microvascular density with pathological features in canine mammary gland carcinomas.

Canine mammary gland tumors (CMGTs) are among the most common neoplasms in female dogs, and serve as valuable models for human breast cancer in terms of histopathology and biological behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between mast cell density (MCD) (total, peritumoral, and intratumoral) and microvascular density (MVD), and to determine their association with clinicopathological features in 40 canine mammary carcinomas (CMCs). The mast cells (MCs) assessment was conducted by utilizing standard Giemsa staining. To evaluate angiogenesis, the immunohistochemical expression

Evaluation of microvascular density in inflammatory lesions and carcinoma of palatine tonsil.

The tonsil carcinoma with squamous cells seems to be one of the neoplastic lesions with a growing incidence worldwide, even in those geographical areas where the smoking incidence has been reduced. In the disease etiopathogenesis, more factors are incriminated. Among these, the most frequently mentioned are smoking, alcohol consumption and the infection with the Human Papilloma Virus. Among the morphological modifications incriminated for the tumoral appearance and development, there is also included the angiogenesis process that involves the apparition of new blood vessels out from the pre-ex

Cell-density-dependent methylmercury susceptibility of cultured human brain microvascular pericytes.

The knowledge of vascular toxicity is important for understanding the neurotoxicity of methylmercury. In the present study, we investigated the cell-density-dependent susceptibility of human brain microvascular pericytes to methylmercury-induced toxicity by using a cell-culture system. The susceptibility of sparse pericyte cultures to methylmercury was greater than that of the dense cultures. In addition, the sparse cultures were more susceptible to methylmercury than to inorganic mercury and cadmium. The intracellular accumulation of methylmercury in the sparse cells was significantly higher

Retinal ganglion cell and microvascular density loss in hereditary spastic paraplegia.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is characterized by progressive degeneration of distal axons in the long corticospinal tracts. Loss of retinal cells and microvascular networks has neither been suspected nor investigated. We concurrently examined the retinal microvasculature and retinal layer morphology in patients with HSP to assess whether retinal features may portray disease and its progression. METHODS: Fifteen patients with HSP and 30 healthy controls were included in this cross-sectional case-control study. Disease severity was assessed with the Spastic Paraplegia Rating

Evaluation of VEGF A expression and microvascular density as prognostic factors in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. An association between microvessel density, a measure of tumor angiogenesis, and conventional prognostic variables has been shown for many different tumor entities. In extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the VEGF expression and microvessel density have rarely been investigated. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded specimens from 51 resected adenocarcinomas of the extrahepatic bile duct were immunostained for vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF A) and CD 34 to evaluate the microvessel density (MVD). VEGF A staining was evaluated

Microvascular density in predicting survival of patients with choroidal and ciliary body melanoma.

PURPOSE: Although malignant uveal melanoma disseminates predominantly hematogenously because of the absence of intraocular lymphatics, consensus about prognostic impact of microvascular density (MVD) has not been reached. This study was undertaken to investigate whether MVD, microvascular patterns, or both determine prognosis of uveal melanoma. METHODS: A population-based retrospective cohort study of melanoma-specific and all-cause mortality of 167 consecutive patients who had an eye enucleated because of choroidal or ciliary body melanoma from 1972 through 1981 was conducted. MVD was determ
