Migraine and movement disorders.

A large series of clinical and experimental observations on the interactions between migraine and the extrapyramidal system are available. Some previous studies reported high frequency of migraine in some basal ganglia (BG) disorders, such as essential tremor (ET), Tourette's syndrome (TS), Sydenham's chorea and more recently restless legs syndrome (RLS). For example, the frequency of migraine headache in a clinic sample of TS patients was found nearly fourfold more than that reported in the general population. To the best of our knowledge, no controlled studies have been conducted to determin

Migraine and sleep disorders.

The burden of migraine strongly increases, considering its linkage with sleep disorders. Migraine is positively associated with many sleep-complaint disorders; some are confirmed by several studies, such as restless leg syndrome, whereas others still remain uncertain or controversial, e.g. narcolepsy. Many studies have investigated the association between headache and other sleep disturbances such as daytime sleepiness, insomnia, snoring and/or apnea, but only a few have focused on migraine. Highlighting the comorbidity between migraine and sleep disorders is important to improve treatment str

Balance disorders and migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is associated with motion sensitivity symptoms such as kinetosis, vestibular symptoms and balance alterations. While focus is given to headache management, addressing these symptoms is often neglected, although they are related to additional migraine burden and increased disability. PURPOSE: Our aim is to disseminate the current understanding of the motion sensitivity symptoms among patients with migraine, with focus on balance impairments. We discuss the susceptibility of migraine to motion sensitivity, its suggested mechanisms, the balance alterations during quiet stand

[Migraine and psychiatric disorders].

BACKGROUND: Migraine, mood disorders and anxiety disorders are common afflictions in the general population, with similar life-time prevalence rates, 10-20%. These disorders share many clinical features and the pathogenetic mechanisms may possibly be similar. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review is based on Medline searches for relevant literature. RESULTS: Migraine typically occurs in the form of attacks. Panic disorder, the anxiety disorder most strongly linked to migraine, also occurs in attacks. Mood swings, both depressive and hypomanic, are often of short duration in many patients and can

Comorbidities of migraine: Sleep disorders.

Sleep disorders are commonly found as comorbid problems in patients with migraine. Indeed, there are likely to be numerous levels of interaction between migraine and sleep, including physiological, pathological, and pharmacological. Of note, the presence of sleep disorders may be a modifiable factor in the trajectory of migraine, and therefore active enquiry to elicit their presence, and manage them appropriately, could be an important component in the holistic care of patients with migraine. This review attempts to provide an outline of what is known about these relationships and highlight wh

Migraine and rare neurological disorders.

Although migraine is generally considered an idiopathic and isolated neurological condition, it may also represent the presenting symptom of several uncommon heritable and acquired neurological diseases contributing to the recognition of such conditions. Migraine may indeed present with atypical characteristics or prolonged duration and may be associated with specific neuroradiological findings that may help in identifying the underlying condition. However, features of migraine in rare diseases are usually little known because of the lack of systematic studies. The aim of this paper is to prov

Temporomandibular disorders and migraine chronification.

Among the established and potential comorbidities of migraine, the temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are rarely discussed, although they are of importance for several reasons. TMD may cause headaches per se, worsen existent primary headaches, and add to the burden of headache disorders. This article explores the potential comorbidity between migraine and TMD and the role of TMD as a potential factor to induce chronic migraine. We discuss the similarities between both conditions, review evidence to support the idea that both disorders are comorbid, and highlight the limited evidence suggesting

Chronic daily headache: transformational migraine, chronic migraine, and related disorders.

Chronic daily headache is an important category of headache illness that affects 4% of the general population. Within this classification are four chronic headache entities: chronic migraine/transformational migraine, chronic tension-type headache, hemicrania continua, and new daily persistent headache. Chronic migraine/transformational migraine is the most common of these entities and is frequently accompanied by medication overuse, neurobehavioral comorbidity, and disability. The terminology and classification of this entity continue to be confounding. Current research is directed at identif

Primary Headache Disorders: Focus on Migraine.

Migraine is the most common disabling headache disorder. Most patients with disabling tension-type headache are likely to have migraine and accordingly respond to treatments efficacious in migraine.Individuals are genetically predisposed to experiencing recurrent migraine.Evidence supports migraine to be a primarily neural and not vascular mediated disorder.1-2% of the population have chronic daily headache associated with acute-relief medication overuse; the majority are migraineurs. The presence of acute-relief medication overuse renders preventative medication less adequately efficacious.

Management of Migraine-Associated Vestibulocochlear Disorders.

Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder that frequently coexists with different vestibular and cochlear symptoms (sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, otalgia, aural fullness, hyperacusis, dizziness, imbalance, and vertigo) and disorders (recurrent benign positional vertigo, persistent postural perceptual dizziness, mal de debarquement, and Menière's disease). Despite evidence of an epidemiological association and similar pathophysiology between migraine and these vestibulocochlear disorders, patients suffering from migraine-related symptoms are usually underdiagnosed and undertreated. Current m

Risk of Vestibulocochlear Disorders in Patients with Migraine or Non-Migraine Headache.

Headaches, especially migraines, have been associated with various vestibular symptoms and syndromes. Tinnitus and hearing loss have also been reported to be more prevalent among migraineurs. However, whether headaches, including migraine or non-migraine headaches (nMH), are associated with vestibular and cochlear disorders remains unclear. Thus, we sought to investigate possible associations between headache and vestibulocochlear disorders. We analyzed 10 years of data from the Smart Clinical Data Warehouse. In patients with migraines and nMH, meniere's disease (MD), BPPV, vestibular neuronit

Migraine and gastric disorders: Are they associated?

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common disorder which affects quality of life. There has been an increasing interest for discovering the association of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders with migraine during past years. This study aims to evaluate the association of Helicobacter pylori contamination, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric ulcer (GU), and duodenal ulcer (DU) with migraine in patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy due to refractory dyspepsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this observational cross-sectional study, 341 dyspeptic patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy in Shahid

Is migraine related to the eating disorders?

Migraine and the eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, share some common demographics, phenomenology, psychopathology, and treatments. Bulimics also appear to be more sensitive to the induction of severe migrainous headaches than controls following challenge with the 5-HT agonist, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), but not placebo or L-tryptophan. This supports a common pathophysiological relationship involving postsynaptic 5-HT dysfunction between these disorders. In order to further explore the possible relationship between eating disorders and migraine, we administered a modified v

Migraine and other headache disorders in pregnancy.

Migraine prevalence is three times higher in women than in men during fertile years, which is mainly due to sex hormone differences. The majority of women suffering from migraine without aura report improvement of their migraine attacks during pregnancy. Migraine attacks with aura can also improve during pregnancy, but more often remain the same or worsen. Anovulation caused by lactation is generally associated with a decrease in migraine attacks in breastfeeding women. This chapter describes the current knowledge on acute and prophylactic treatment options of migraine and other primary headac

Comorbidity of migraine and major affective disorders.

Two epidemiologic studies of young adults from the Detroit metropolitan area and from Zurich, Switzerland, focused on the relationship between migraine and affective disorders, such as major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, and cyclothymia. Through application of current definitions of migraine and psychiatric disorders in structured diagnostic interviews, data have been obtained that strongly support clinical observations on migraine-major depression comorbidity. The findings to support a link between migraine and bipolar disorder are less consistent. Physicians caring for patients wi

Migraine and sleep disorders: a systematic review.

Migraine and sleep disorders are common and often burdensome chronic conditions with a high prevalence in the general population, and with considerable socio-economic impact and costs. The existence of a relationship between migraine and sleep disorders has been recognized from centuries by clinicians and epidemiological studies. Nevertheless, the exact nature of this association, the underlying mechanisms and interactions are complex and not completely understood. Recent biochemical and functional imaging studies identified central nervous system structures and neurotransmitters involved in th

Migraine in mitochondrial disorders: Prevalence and characteristics.

Background Migraine is a well-known feature of mitochondrial disorders (MDs). However, no systematic epidemiological data are available in large populations of patients. Aims The aim of this cross-sectional cohort study was to describe the prevalence and migraine characteristics in a large cohort of patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. Methods We studied 93 consecutive patients with characterised MDs referred to our Neuromuscular Unit during a 12-month period. All patients (age range = 16-78 years; 31 men; 58 progressive external ophthalmoplegia [PEO], 12 myoclonic epilepsy with ra
