Silicosis in barium miners.

Four men who mined barytes in Scotland and who developed pneumoconiosis are described. Three developed progressive massive fibrosis, from which two died; and one developed a nodular simple pneumoconiosis after leaving the industry. The radiological and pathological features of the men's lungs were those of silicosis and high proportions of quartz were found in two of them post mortem. The quartz was inhaled from rocks associated with the barytes in the mines. The features of silicosis in barium miners are contrasted with the benign pneumoconiosis, baritosis, that occurs in workers exposed to c…

Pneumoconiosis of shale miners.

Four patients are described in whom pneumoconiosis was diagnosed towards the end of a lifetime's work in shale mines. All developed complicated pneumoconiosis, diagnosed in two cases at necropsy, in one by lobectomy, and in one radiologically. Two of the patients were found at necropsy also to have peripheral squamous lung cancer. The clinical and histological features of the disease resembled the pneumoconioses of coalminers and kaolin workers and the lungs of three of the patients were shown to contain dust composed predominantly of kaolinite, mica, and silica. Shale miners' complicated pneu…

Greater Odds for Angina in Uranium Miners Than Nonuranium Miners in New Mexico.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that uranium miners in New Mexico (NM) have a greater prevalence of cardiovascular disease than miners who extracted the nonuranium ore. METHODS: NM-based current and former uranium miners were compared with nonuranium miners by using cross-sectional standardized questionnaire data from the Mining Dust in the United States (MiDUS) study from 1989 to 2016. RESULTS: Of the 7215 eligible miners, most were men (96.3%). Uranium miners (n = 3151, 43.7%) were older and diabetic, but less likely to currently smoke or use snuff (P ≤ 0.001 fo…

Characteristics of covid-19 in miners and former miners with a history of silicosis.

During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, it was suggested that individuals with chronic lung diseases, such as silicosis, could be at increased risk of complications; however, the evidence remains limited. This study describes the prevalence of COVID-19 among 51 miners and former miners with silicosis who were part of an occupational surveillance program. 96% were over 60 years old, 37.2% had moderate or severe silicosis, and 67% had at least one comorbidity. The prevalence of COVID-19 was 15.7%, lower than the general population, with mild cases and no reported deaths. 94.1% had received at least two …

Fragrance sensitivity in coal miners.

In a prospective study, we have examined the incidence of fragrance sensitivity in Nottinghamshire coal miners. Our results confirm previous reports of an increased incidence of such sensitivity in miners (45%) when compared with both male (20%) and female (13%) non-miners. This increased incidence is not related to an increased use of perfumed cosmetics, but may be related to the use of a highly perfumed body lotion in subjects who already have a high incidence of irritant hand eczema. There was no significant increase in the rate of positive reactions to other applied allergens.

Mortality among uranium miners in North America and Europe: the Pooled Uranium Miners Analysis (PUMA).

BACKGROUND: The Pooled Uranium Miners Analysis (PUMA) study draws together information from cohorts of uranium miners from Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany and the USA. METHODS: Vital status and cause of death were ascertained and compared with expectations based upon national mortality rates by computing standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) overall and by categories of time since first hire, calendar period of first employment and duration of employment as a miner. RESULTS: There were 51 787 deaths observed among 118 329 male miners [SMR = 1.05; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04…

Legionella pneumophila in coal miners.

Legionnaires' disease was diagnosed in three mineworkers at a colliery. Investigation of water samples from various sites at the colliery did not discover a source of the infection. Results of serological surveys undertaken on the workmates of the patients and other miners showed only one additional positive Legionella indirect fluorescent antibody test. There was, therefore, no justification for any alteration in the water supply or the ventilation at the colliery.
