Human Rabies - Missouri, 2014.

On September 18, 2014, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) was notified of a suspected rabies case in a Missouri resident. The patient, a man aged 52 years, lived in a rural, deeply wooded area, and bat sightings in and around his home were anecdotally reported. Exposure to bats poses a risk for rabies. After two emergency department visits for severe neck pain, paresthesia in the left arm, upper body tremors, and anxiety, he was hospitalized on September 13 for encephalitis of unknown etiology. On September 24, he received a diagnosis of rabies and on September 26, h…

Human rabies - Missouri, 2008.

On November 24, 2008, the Missouri State Public Health Laboratory notified CDC of suspected rabies in a man aged 55 years from Missouri. The man had been bitten by a bat 4--6 weeks before symptom onset and had not sought medical care at the time of the bite. After visiting two emergency departments (EDs) with symptoms consistent with rabies, he was hospitalized on November 23 and treated using the Milwaukee protocol. On November 26, infection with a rabies virus variant associated with silver-haired bats was confirmed. The patient died on November 30. This report summarizes the patient's treat…

Pathological gambling in Missouri.

Riverboat casinos were introduced in 1994, and there are now eleven gambling venues in Missouri, in addition to the lottery. Gambling is monitored by the Missouri Gaming Commission which was established to supervise gambling operations in the state, and minimize criminal involvement. The Commission also operates programs for problem gamblers that are described. Pathological gambling has become a major problem in Missouri and elsewhere, and its characteristics and clinical management are reviewed herein.

Human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis, Missouri.

To determine the incidence, clinical and laboratory characteristics, and utility of molecular diagnosis of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (HME) in the primary care setting, we conducted a prospective study in an outpatient primary care clinic in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. One hundred and two patients with a history of fever for 3 days (>37.7 degrees C), tick bite or exposure, and no other infectious disease diagnosis were enrolled between March 1997 and December 1999. HME was diagnosed in 29 patients by indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Clinical a…

129I in Missouri thyroids.

Concentrations of 129I and values of the 129I/127I ration are reported in one sample of indigenous vegetation and in over forty additional individual thyroids of man, wild deer and beef cattle in Missouri. The results of this and other studies in our laboratory indicate the following order for successively lower values of 129I/127I ratios in the local environment: Rain, wild deer, commercial milk, beef cattle and human. The value of the 129I/127I ratio in the single vegetation sample is intermediate to the mean values in wild deer and commercial milk, but well within the range of values observ…

Autochthonous Chagas Disease - Missouri, 2018.

On December 13, 2017, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) was notified of a suspected case of Chagas disease in a Missouri woman. The patient had donated blood, and laboratory screening revealed antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Evaluation by physicians found no clinical symptoms consistent with Chagas disease. The patient had no travel history that would have suggested a significant risk for Chagas disease risk and had no occupational exposure to the disease agent. She had never received a blood transfusion or organ transplant.…

Cancer risks among Missouri farmers.

A series of case-control studies was conducted to investigate cancer risks among farmers. These studies were based on Missouri Cancer Registry data for 15,000 white male patients, including 1720 subjects classified as farmers, registered between 1984 and 1988. For each cancer site, all other cancer registrations formed the control group. The largest risks among farmers were found for lip cancer (odds ratio [OR], 3.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.99 to 4.73) and cancer of the bone (OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 0.66 to 5.81). Elevated risks were observed for several other sites, including the nasal cav…

An update on the epidemiology of AIDS in Missouri.

It has been 13 years since the initial report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describing the condition that came to be known as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Because of the public health significance of the AIDS epidemic, an elaborate national surveillance system, involving CDC along with state and local health departments, came to be established. The surveillance system now provides detailed information about the epidemiology of AIDS in this country. At the national level, through September 1993, 339,250 cases of AIDS have been reported to CDC; 204,3

Syphilis in Missouri: a continuing problem.

Syphilis has re-emerged as a significant public health problem in the United States and Missouri. Reported cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis and congenital syphilis in Missouri have been increasing since the late 1980s, and a major outbreak of these diseases continues in the St. Louis area. The nature of syphilis combined with certain characteristics of those populations at highest risk of infection can make prevention and control difficult. Achieving success requires the cooperative efforts of practicing physicians and public health professionals.

A case of Whipple's disease in Missouri.

Whipple's disease is a rare disorder which has fascinated physicians since its description in 1907. The onset is usually indolent, the symptoms are protean and multisystemic, and disease has often been present for years before a diagnosis is made. Although rare, its identification is important since therapy is simple and effective. We report a case of Whipple's disease in a lifelong resident of Missouri and review the important features of the disease.
