Mitral valve prolapse is defined as abnormal bulging of the mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium during ventricular systole. Mitral valve prolapse is a common condition that is a risk factor for mitral regurgitation, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and endocarditis. Myxomatous degeneration is the most common cause of mitral prolapse in the United States and Europe, and progression of myxomatous mitral prolapse is the most common cause of mitral regurgitation that requires surgical treatment. Myxomatous degeneration appears to have genetic etiology. The genetics of myxomatous degene…

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is still a clinical challenging problem. In this report, we review the main characteristics of this entity. Epidemiology of MVP, which relies on the diagnostic criteria adopted, and the incidence of complications, both arrhythmic and structural, are influenced by the characteristics of the population studied, which may lead to bias in data interpretation. Even the definition of MVP may differ according to the cardiologist's or cardiac surgeon's point of view. Usually, cardiologists define MVP as the protrusion of all or part of the mitral leaflets into the left atri…

Mitral valve prolapse has previously been found to be associated with severe cardiovascular complications such as embolic insults, infectious endocarditis, and sudden cardiac death. However, at the same time, in particular after adopting M-mode and 2D echo for diagnosis, prevalence of the disease was found to be very high, especially in the young. The dilemma of a disease which is frequent and mostly asymptomatic, but in some cases has catastrophic complications, has been solved by implementation of more restrictive diagnostic criteria based on an appreciation of the spatial morphology of the …

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is usually a primary, dominantly inherited condition. Diagnosis may be made by auscultation of a midsystolic click and late-systolic murmur that move dynamically with postural maneuvers. Echocardiography confirms the diagnosis by demonstrating M-mode late-systolic prolapse and 2-D leaflet billowing into the left atrium. More severe forms of MVP can be detected echocardiographically by documentation of significant mitral regurgitation, enlargement and thickening of the mitral leaflets and anulus, and loss of leaflet apposition. In contrast to earlier reports, the tru…

Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) is a common cardiac disorder in our community. It is estimated that 4% to 15% of the general population have the anatomical defect of prolapsed mitral valve leaflets during ventricular systole. Patients with MVP that suffer from chest pain, dyspnea, fatigue, dizziness, syncope, palpitations, cardiac arrhythmias, anxiety, and panic attacks are diagnosed as having Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. There is much controversy in the medical literature as to the causes of MVPS symptomatology. Some scientists believe that autonomic dysfunction, adrenergic, and vagal responsi…

Mitral valve prolapse continues to arouse considerable interest because of its worldwide prevalence, lack of unanimity in diagnostic criteria, and association with such potentially serious complications as angina-like chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, sudden death, progressive mitral regurgitation, cerebral embolism, and infective endocarditis. This review includes a discussion of the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse around the world, a critical review of the diagnostic criteria, and a discussion of the pathophysiology of the important complications, with special emphasis on cardiac arrhythm…

Mitral valve prolapse, diagnosed by auscultation of typical midsystolic clicks and late systolic murmurs or by echocardiographic demonstration of definite systolic protrusion of the mitral leaflets into the left atrium, is the commonest human abnormality of heart valves, affecting roughly 4 per cent of the population. The most important clinical features of mitral valve prolapse include palpitations and small but definite risks of infective endocarditis or significant mitral regurgitation in middle age, or later. Current evidence suggests that mitral prolapse is due to an inherited abnormality…
