Mites, caterpillars and moths.

Besides conditions such as scabies and hypersensitivity to house dust mites, other diseases caused by mites and caterpillars tend to be more … l. The terms erucism and lepidopterism are used for the various diseases caused by caterpillars and moths. Both terms are not used consistently. With respect to pathogenesis, various mechanisms have been described, including type I and type IV hypersensitivity as well as irritant and toxin-induced reactions. In Germany, skin reactions following exposure …

What's eating you? clothes moths (Tineola species).

Common household insects can be confused with ectoparasites. Understanding the basic identification and monitoring techniques of clothes moths will help the clinician identify if a patient has an infestation of the household versus his/her body. Clothes moth larvae are not parasites but are found on infested clothing and can be confused with myiasis.

How do tiger moths jam bat sonar?

The tiger moth Bertholdia trigona is the only animal in nature known to defend itself by jamming the sonar of its predators - bats. In this … ereotyped pattern of echolocation emissions during attack, even while bats continued pursuit of the moths. This likely further hinders the bats' ability to track prey. These results have implications for the evolution of sonar jamming in tiger moths, and we suggest evolutionary pathways by which sonar jamming may have evolved from other tiger moth defen …

Susceptibility of Cooking Herbs to Stored-Product Moths.

Although herbs can contain several secondary metabolites potentially harmful to insects, dried herbs, like all stored foods, can be damaged by various insect pests. These pests have the potential to diminish both the quantity and the quality of food, and the consequences of infestation often only become noticeable once the pest has already become established. This study investigates the ability of two Lepidoptera pests, one polyphagous, Plodia interpunctella, and one selective, Idaea inquinata, to complete the postembryonic development on eleven dried herbs commonly used in cooking: dill (Anet

Polyandry in Noctuid Moths: Taxonomic, Bionomic, and Evolutionary Implications.

Polyandry influences sexual behaviour and supports sexual selection in moths, incl. Noctuids. In polyandry, a female mates with multiple males within a few days. Copulation is a multi-phase process, as sperm are packed into spermatophores and transferred to the female genitalia. This process is costly, since spermatophore production and transfer is time-consuming. When this process is repeated, it results in sexual selection and enhances heterozygosity. Pest and migrating Noctuids are often polyandrous. Polyandry is common in the "pest clade" of Noctuidae (e.g., Euxoa, Dichagyris). We hypothes…

Microclimate-based oviposition site selection in butterflies and moths.

The sites herbivorous insects select to deposit eggs determine to a variable degree the environment their larvae will experience during development. Therefore, oviposition site selection should be seen as a significant life-history trait affecting the survival of the offspring. While searching for suitable sites, egg-laying terrestrial insects are predicted to respond to environmental factors that function as indicators for larval development and survival. In herbivorous insects, such as butterflies and moths, microclimate may be of significance for the selection of a suitable host plant or sp…

Genetic convergence of industrial melanism in three geometrid moths.

The rise of dark (melanic) forms of many species of moth in heavily coal-polluted areas of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain, and their post-1970s fall, point to a common selective pressure (camouflage against bird predators) acting at the community level. The extent to which this convergent phenotypic response relied on similar genetic and developmental mechanisms is unknown. We examine this problem by testing the hypothesis that the locus controlling melanism in Phigalia pilosaria and Odontopera bidentata, two species of geometrid moth that showed strong associations between melanism

Eyespots in Automeris Moths Mimic Sympatric Owl Species (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae).

Eyespot mimicry is a well-documented anti-predatory strategy in many insects, particularly in moths. In the genus Automeris, species possess hindwing eyespots that resemble owl eyes, serving to startle the moth's predators. However, the mechanism by which Automeris eyespots function as a deterrent to moth predators is unresolved. Two hypotheses dominate the literature for eyespots broadly. First, that eyespots function as mimics of owl eyes with the rationale that the moth's predators are prey for owls and would avoid anything that looks like an owl. Alternatively, eyespots could be deterring …

The Moth-Eaten Mandible: Osteomyelitis.

Inflammatory lesions such as osteomyelitis of the jaw may share some of the radiographic features of malignancy; however, a demonstrable dental cause for it usually exists. In addition, inflammatory lesions generally stimulate a sclerotic bone reaction, which is uncommon in malignancy. The imaging modality of choice for aiding in the differential diagnosis is computed tomography imaging because of its ability to clearly delineate sequestra and periosteal new bone formation.

Evidence for histamine in the urticating hairs of Hylesia moths.

An urticarial dermatosis after contact with the urticating hairs of the adult female Hylesia moth may occur by several mechanisms including the intradermal injection of inflammatory mediators through the urticating hairs. Extracts were prepared from whole moths, urticating hairs, and other moth parts. Each of these extracts was subjected to a radioenzyme assay for histamine. Histamine was present in extracts made from whole moths and from urticating hairs. Extracts made from other moth parts contained no histamine. Cutaneous wheals occurred after intradermal injections of histamine and various…

Efficacy of the novel insecticide, isocycloseram, against codling moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Codling moths, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), can cause severe damage in apples (Malus domestica Borkh) (Rosales: Rosaceae) and are targets of the majority of insecticide applications. A novel insecticide, isocycloseram, presents a new mode of action with the potential to be incorporated into integrated pest management programs for codling moths. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of isocycloseram on codling moths in apples using both laboratory and field trials. In the laboratory trials, a direct toxicity test was conducted to compare the effectiveness of…

Modulatory effects of pheromone on olfactory learning and memory in moths.

Pheromones are chemical communication signals known to elicit stereotyped behaviours and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species, generally in relation to a specific function (e.g. mate finding in moths). However, recent research suggests that pheromones can modulate behaviours, which are not directly related to their usual function and thus potentially affect behavioural plasticity. To test this hypothesis, we studied the possible modulatory effects of pheromones on olfactory learning and memory in Agrotis ipsilon moths, which are well-established models to study sex-phe…

"This is not an apple"-yeast mutualism in codling moth.

The larva of codling moth Cydia pomonella (Tortricidae, Lepidoptera) is known as the worm in the apple, mining the fruit for food. We here show that codling moth larvae are closely associated with yeasts of the genus Metschnikowia. Yeast is an essential part of the larval diet and further promotes larval survival by reducing the incidence of fungal infestations in the apple. Larval feeding, on the other hand, enables yeast proliferation on unripe fruit. Chemical, physiological and behavioral analyses demonstrate that codling moth senses and responds to yeast aroma. Female moths are attracted t…

An epidemiologic study of gypsy moth rash.

In 1981, outbreaks of itchy skin rashes were reported accompanying the heavy infestation of gypsy moths (GM) in the Northeastern United States. The rash problem was widespread and a considerable public annoyance. In the spring of 1982, during the period of greatest contact with the caterpillars, a telephone survey was carried out in a highly infested community (HI) and a minimally infested community (LO). Information was collected from 1,000 persons, representing more than 90 per cent of those selected for study. The one-week risk of rash was 10.4 per cent in the HI area and 1.6 per cent in th…
