Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a pemphigoid disease defined by the presence of autoantibodies against the dermal-epidermal junction and predominant involvement of mucous membranes. Diagnosis is made by the clinical presentation and linear deposits of IgG and/or IgA and/or C3 at the dermal-epidermal junction by direct immunofluorescence microscopy of a perilesional biopsy. Circulating autoantibodies can be detected in most patients by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy on salt-split human skin as well as ELISA and immunoblotting with recombinant and cell-derived target antigens. For sy…

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is chronic and frequently associated with exacerbations and remissions of clinical signs and symptoms. Clinicians should use pathologic and immunonologic techniques to help diagnose patients. Multidisciplinary collaboration is often necessary for the diagnosis and proper treatment of MMP. Systemic adjuvant immunosuppressive therapy is necessary for patients with progressive disease. In spite of the advances in available immunosuppressive medications and biologics, scarring is a significant complication in many cases. Surgical intervention is not curable; howeve…

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a clinically and immunopathologically heterogenous disease with an incidence of about 2/million inhabitants/year in central Europe. Pemphigoid diseases are characterized by autoantibodies against structural proteins of the epidermis and/or surface-close epithelia. MMP has been defined as pemphigoid disease with predominant mucosal lesions. Most frequently, the oral cavity and the conjunctivae are affected. Lesions outside the mouth tend to heal with scarring leading to visual impairment and finally blindness, as well as, more rarely, impairment of breathing …

INTRODUCTION: We review the use of mucous membrane grafting in the clinical management of dry eye-associated ocular surface disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Literature review of the scientific evidence, presentation of guidelines and surgical details.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The reformation and maintenance of a conjunctival fornix requires the addition of epithelial tissue, or a basement membrane which can be populated by healthy host epithelial cells. A healthy conjunctival or tarsal autograft, when available, is the ideal material. Oral mucosa does not contain goblet cells and therefore does…

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a chronic, subepithelial autoimmune disease, which predominantly involves mucosal surfaces and results in mucosal blistering, ulceration, and subsequent scarring. This article discusses the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of MMP, with mention of related subepithelial bullous dermatoses.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid refers to a heterogeneous group of autoimmune diseases with subepidermal blister formation that can affect all mucous membranes with varying frequencies. This is a rare disease without any geographic or sexual predisposition that is characterized by recurrent inflammation and progressive scarring. The specific diagnostics can be negative in up to 50% of cases. The diagnosis is predominantly made in patients aged 60-80 years. Ophthalmologists play an important role in the care of affected individuals as the conjunctiva is the second most frequent site of involvement. …

In the course of the infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we frequently observe disorders of the mucous membranes and, occasionally, they present the first manifestation of HIV-induced immunodeficiency. Like in other organs, opportunistic infections and malignant tumors prevail as a result of the impaired immune system. Opportunistic infections are characterized by frequency (candidiasis), aggressive expansion, persistence, frequent recurrences, and resistance to therapy (gingivitis, parodontitis, herpes simplex, warts). Oral hairy leucoplakia is considered a specific lesion …

A detailed understanding of the immunopathogenesis of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is of particular importance in view of the mostly difficult diagnostics and treatment of this blistering autoimmune dermatosis. A still unknown disturbance of the body's own immune tolerance leads to the formation of autoreactive cells. As the disease progresses these produce autoantibodies which are directed against structural proteins in the basement membrane zone (BMZ). After they bind to the target antigen, complement factors are deposited along the BMZ and inflammatory cells invade the underlying tissue…

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune bullous diseases in childhood are a diagnostic challenge.
CASE: We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with recurrent vulvar erosions since early childhood. She had been referred to a child abuse unit under the suspicion of sexual abuse. She responded well to dapsone and topical corticosteroids.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Our review focuses on previously reported cases of pemphigoid (bullous or mucous membrane) in childhood with exclusively genital involvement. We also summarize mucous membrane pemphigoid cases diagnosed during childhood. There seems to be a different…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review article summarizes the recent literature in regards to advancements in the diagnosis and management of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) published in the English literature since May 2011.
RECENT FINDINGS: MMP is an uncommon, subepithelial blistering conjunctivitis that is commonly associated with vision loss. Distinct subgroups of MMP have recently been identified using advanced immunohistochemical techniques. Antiepiligrin MMP has been described as a distinct entity with a relationship to certain solid organ malignancies. There is evidence that conventional imm…

Mucous membrane pemphigoid belongs to the family of sub-epidermal bullous diseases and is clinically characterized by mucosal involvement leading to fibrosis and scarring. Cutaneous involvement is unfrequent and oral mucosa and conjunctivas are the most frequently involves mucosa. Treatment relies on anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs. The main goal is the limitation of the fibrosing potential of the autoimmune deposits within various mucous membranes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review articles on mucous membrane pemphigoid, published between June 2004-May 2005.
RECENT FINDINGS: Decreased glycosylation of mucin was found in patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. A unique antigen in oral mucous membrane pemphigoid has not yet been identified. Increased vascular cell adhesion molecule and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 expression was found in skin of patients affected by mucous membrane pemphigoid. Autoreactive T cells to an epitope of bullous pemphigoid antigen 180 kilodaltons were identified in the blood of some patients with mucous mem…

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and pseudopemphigoid.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred eighty consecutive patients referred for the evaluation of possible ocular MMP from January 1, 1985, to December 31, 2001.
METHODS: Information on patients presenting for evaluation of possible MMP was entered prospectively into a database, which was supplemented by a retrospective chart review. Mucous membrane pemphigoid was diagnosed in patients with a compatible clinical picture by the linear deposition of …
