Effectiveness of Mud-Pack Therapy and Mud-Bath Therapy in Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis has a tremendous socioeconomic impact in terms of drug spending, hospital admissions, work productivity, and temporary or permanent incapacity. Mud therapy has been discussed as potential conservative treatment options for osteoarthritis. However, findings from several trials still remain controversial. For this reason, we aimed to systematically review the highest evidence provided by published trials to estimate the clinical effect of mud-pack and mud-bath therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis. METHODS: We searched PubMed, PEDro, and the Cochrane CENTRAL Reg…

A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of mud-bath therapy on knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) results from loss of cartilage in-tegrity in association with changes to the structure of the entire joint. Treatment of OA is based on different pharmaceutical and no phar-maceutical approaches and the latter include the use of spa-therapy. The biological effects of mud-bath therapy are mainly secondary to heat stimulation and to physic-chemical properties of mineral waters and mud-packs. Mud-bath therapy likely exerts its effects modulating several cytokines and other molecules involved in inflammation and cartilage degradation. Our aim was to perform an update

Clinical and anti-aging effect of mud-bathing therapy for patients with fibromyalgia.

Spa bathing is known as a medical treatment for certain diseases causing chronic pains. Spa water contains mineral components which lower the specific heat of the water, resulting in a higher efficiency to warm body-core temperature. This phenomenon yields pain-relieving effect for rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain, sciatic neuralgia, fibromyalgia, etc. Here we introduce medical and biological effects of mud-spa-bathing therapy for fibromyalgia other than pain relief, the changes of blood examination data, and the telomere length of circulating leukocytes. The enrolled 7 patients with fibrom

[The use of puncture physiotherapy for optimizing the mud therapy of spinal osteochondrosis patients].

It is shown that physical puncture effects arouse favourable reactions of human organism both in monotherapy and in combined therapy with peloids. This suggests a conclusion that indications to physiotherapy of spinal osteochondrosis can be extended and cover also acute osteochondrosis, that new complexes of physiopeloid therapy may be designed with minimal risk of balneoreactions.

The short-term efficacy of mud therapy for knee osteoarthritis: A meta-analysis.

The objective of this review is to systematically evaluate the short-term efficacy of mud therapy in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA).Randomized controlled trials, in which treatment of KOA is mud therapy, were included by systematically searching the PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases.According to inclusion criteria and searching method, 11 articles, containing a total of 1106 patients, were included in the study. Our results showed significant differences in visual analog scale pain score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (pain, stif…

[The phonophoresis of solutions of a "dry" mud extract in the therapy of patients with chronic gastritis].

The study of stomach morphology and function in chronic gastritis treated with phonophoresis of dry mud extract solutions demonstrates a stimulating effect of the treatment on acid production. A positive response was also registered on the part of the structure of gastric mucous lining and functional activity of this epithelium.

Effect of electro-acupuncture, massage, mud, and sauna therapies in patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

A 48-year-old married woman diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 2007, came to our hospital in July 2014 with the complaint of severe pain and swelling over multiple joints, especially over small joints, which was associated with stiffness (more in morning), deformities of fingers and toes, with disturbed sleep and poor quality of life (QOL) for the past 7 years. She received a combination of electro acupuncture (14 sessions), massage (18 sessions), mud (18 sessions), and sauna (3 sessions) (EMMS) therapies for 30-min, 45-min, 30-min, and 15-min per session, respectively for 3 weeks. Effectiveness and Safety of Mud Therapy (Pelotherapy) for Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Mud therapy (pelotherapy)-the therapeutic application of natural mineral-rich mud, peat, or clay-is practiced in at least 40 countries as a non-pharmacological adjunct for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This systematic review synthesized evidence on the effectiveness and safety of pelotherapy in adults with MSDs. PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, LILACS, SCI, and SSCI were searched from inception to April 2026 without language restrictions. Randomized and controlled clinical trials comparing pelotherapy with sham, usual care, or no treatment in adults with confirmed MSDs were eligibl…

Mud bath therapy influences nitric oxide, myeloperoxidase and glutathione peroxidase serum levels in arthritic patients.

Nitric oxide (NO) has recently been proposed as an important mediator in inflammatory phases and in loss of cartilage. In inflammatory arthritis NO levels are correlated with disease activity and articular cartilage is able to produce large amounts of NO with the appropriate inducing factors such as cytokines and/or endotoxin. Neutrophils also play an important role in inflammatory reactions and the level of myeloperoxidase, a constituent of neutrophil granules, is related to the intensity of the inflammation. Because there is evidence that suggests that mud packs influence the main cytokines

Effects of medical mud-pack therapy on inflammatory gene expression and clinical outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

This study aimed to evaluate the association of medical mud-pack therapy with changes in gene expression of key inflammatory markers, miRNA and clinical outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Thirty-two patients with knee osteoarthritis were assigned to a medical mud-pack therapy (MMT) group (n = 16) or control group (n = 16). Molecular assessments used quantitative PCR for key cytokines and miRNA expressions. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with the VAS for pain and WOMAC for function. Pre- and post-treatment measurements were obtained, with the MMT group receiving mud-pack therapy p
