Nematode infections: filariases.

More than 150 million people, mainly in developing countries, are affected by filarial nematode infections that cause debilitating and disfiguring diseases. Although transmission is restricted to the tropics and subtropics, imported infections sometimes occur in Europe and North America among immigrants and refugees from endemic countries, and rarely among long-term travelers. This article reviews the epidemiology of the most important human filarial nematodes, their current distribution, life cycles, clinical features, and disease burden. Diagnosis, treatment, and tools for prevention and con…

Association between urticaria and nematode infections.

BACKGROUND: The association between parasites and urticaria was first suggested in the last century. A wide range, 0-75.4%, of the prevalence of parasitic infection has been reported with chronic urticaria (CU). Moreover, urticaria may be detected in patients with parasitosis. Nematodes are a type of helminth that infect hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to collect and review the published studies and cases of urticaria associated with nematode infections. METHODS: A search of scientific literature data bases from January 1960 until May …

Strongyloidiasis and other intestinal nematode infections.

In contrast to other helminthic parasites, Strongyloides stercoralis can replicate within humans, causing a chronic persistent infection that can be severe and fatal in compromised hosts. This article reviews new developments to help meet the clinical challenges of this infection, including clinical clues to the diagnosis, new diagnostic methods, including stool culture and serological assays, new drugs such as albendazole and ivermectin, and difficult treatment issues. The other major intestinal nematode parasites, including Ascaris, hookworm, and Trichuris, are extremely common worldwide, bu

Control strategies for human intestinal nematode infections.

In recent years significant progress has been made in understanding the ecology, epidemiology and related morbidity and development of new t … earing age and pre-school children are two other groups at high risk of morbidity due to intestinal nematode infections. Highly effective and safety-tested, single-dose anthelminthic drugs are now available, permitting periodical deworming of schoolchildren and other high-risk groups at affordable prices. Four anthelminthics against all intestinal nematodes are inclu …

Nematode infections: soil-transmitted helminths and trichinella.

Infection with soil-transmitted helminths occurs via ingestion of nematode eggs with contaminated food and water, via hands, or inhalation of dust, or by penetration of larvae through the skin. Trichinella infections are caused by the ingestion of larvae contained in undercooked meat. In highly endemic areas, preventive chemotherapy (ie, regular administration of anthelmintic drugs to at-risk populations) is the key strategy against soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Integrated control approaches, including improved hygiene, sanitation, and water, are required for lasting effects. Because of grow

Molecular and immunodiagnosis of human filarial nematode infections.

The filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Onchocerca volvulus represent major public health problems in the Tropics. Effective diagnosis of infection with these parasites is required both for administration of drugs to infected individuals and for monitoring of control programs. However parasitological diagnosis is associated with a number of problems including frequently inadequate sensitivity, long pre-patency of infection and inconvenience for patients. For these reasons there has been considerable effort expended in developing other forms of diagnosis, in particular im

Neuroparasitic infections: nematodes.

Globalization has produced an increase in the number of people at risk for contracting parasitic infection. Central nervous system infection by nematodal parasites can be devastating. Early recognition and treatment of infection can significantly decrease morbidity of the parasitic infection, as well as the risk of secondary superinfection. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for five of the more common nematodal infections of the nervous system--Angiostrongylus spp., Baylisacaris procyonis, Gnathostoma spinigerum, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Toxocara spp.--is reviewed.

[Trends of soil-transmitted nematode infections in Jiangxi Province].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the status and trends of soil-transmitted nematode infections in Jiangxi Province from 1989 to 2014, so as to provide the evidence for generating the strategy of soil-transmitted nematode prevention and control. METHODS: The data of three epidemiological surveys on human parasitic diseases (in 1989, 2002 and 2014) were classified and analyzed. The stool examination by Kato-Katz's thick smear method was adopted for the investigation of soil-transmitted nematode infections. RESULTS: The total infection rate of soil-transmitted nematodes decreased by 91.89% from 77.67% in …

Th2-mediated host protective immunity to intestinal nematode infections.

Despite many years of study, relatively little is known about the effector mechanisms that operate against intestine-dwelling nematodes. Most of the current understanding comes from studies of laboratory model systems in rodents. It is clear that when an intestinal helminth infection takes place the immune system generates a strong Th2-mediated response, which regulates a variety of responses characteristic of helminth infections such as eosinophilia, intestinal mastocytosis and elevated IgE production. The ability to modulate the host's immune response in vivo with cytokine-specific monoclona

Intestinal nematode infections in children: the pathophysiological price paid.

The mechanism by which small animals such as rodents resist or eliminate nematode parasites requires mucosal inflammation as the final effector of the immune response. The resulting freedom from chronic infection may be worth the price of short-term illness. Putative vaccines which attempt to enhance the natural effect will have to take into account the inflammatory cost to the host. Human helminthiases involve a more stable equilibrium between host and parasite. The medical literature on hookworm disease and clinical ascariasis describes, for the former, some chronic inflammatory effects corr
