Pulmonary Edema Occurring after Nitric Acid Exposure.

Nitric acid (HNO3) is a strong acid and oxidizing agent used for various applications including production of ammonium nitrate in the fertilizer industry. Nitrogen oxides formed when nitric acid interacts with the environment have been implicated in inhalation injuries. This describes a case of a 49-year-old male who presented to the emergency department complaining of an acute onset of shortness of breath approximately 12 hours after being exposed to nitric acid fumes. He presented with a room air oxygen saturation of 80 percent with moderate to severe respiratory distress. His plain film che…

Cellulose Isolated from Giant Miscanthus by Nitric Acid Treatment with Acid Recycling.

Stems of giant miscanthus-a perennial grass crop-were investigated in this study. The Kürschner cellulose content was determined to be 52.8 wt%, indicating that this feedstock holds considerable promise for cellulose isolation. For the first time, cellulose was isolated from giant miscanthus stems via a modified nitric acid process involving treatment of the feedstock with nitric acid at the first stage with fivefold acid recycling. The isolated cellulose samples were characterized by consistently high and mutually comparable quality. A high α-cellulose content of 92.0-94.0 wt% and a high degr…

The revival of nitric acid for the treatment of anogenital warts.

The destruction of small lesions by tissue denaturation (fixation) rather than erosion (acid hydrolysis) is accomplished by nitric acid of moderate strength in which nitric acid reduction products are generated by nitric acid oxidation of added organic acids. Such solutions show a temperature-dependent increase or loss of nitrite during storage, with loss of therapeutic activity when nitrite levels decrease after storage at cooler temperatures. Use of a preparation technique that completely consumes all the oxidizable organic components added to generate nitrite results in a stable preparation…

Gamma Radiolysis of Hydroxylamine in Aqueous Nitric Acid Solutions.

The radiolytic stability of hydroxylamine (NH3OH+) in concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) is directly relevant to plutonium finishing in used nuclear fuel reprocessing, where NH3OH+ serves as both a plutonium reductant and nitrous acid (HNO2) scavenger under high-radiation conditions. In this study, aqueous 1 M HNO3 solutions containing NH3OH+ were gamma irradiated to accumulated doses of up to 100 kGy. The radiolytic loss of NH3OH+ was found to be independent of its initial concentration, pointing to its reaction with HNO2 and hydroxyl (•OH) and nitrate (NO3•) radicals as the primary degradation …

Water-soluble nitric-oxide-releasing acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) prodrugs.

A series of water-soluble (benzoyloxy)methyl esters of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), commonly known as aspirin, are described. The new derivatives each have alkyl chains containing a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing nitrooxy group and a solubilizing moiety bonded to the benzoyl ring. The compounds were synthesized and evaluated as ASA prodrugs. After conversion to the appropriate salt, most of the derivatives are solid at room temperature and all possess good water solubility. They are quite stable in acid solution (pH 1) and less stable at physiological pH. In human serum, these compounds are immedi

Photochemical renoxification of nitric acid on real urban grime.

The fate of NO(x) (=NO + NO(2)) is important to understand because NO(x) is a significant player in air quality determination through its role in O(3) formation. Here we show that renoxification of the urban atmosphere may occur through the photolysis of HNO(3) deposited onto urban grime. The photolysis occurs 4 orders of magnitude faster than in water with J values at noon on July 1 in Toronto of 1.2 × 10(-3) s(-1) for nitrate on urban grime and 1.0 × 10(-7) s(-1) for aqueous nitrate. Photolysis of nitrate present on urban grime probably follows the same mechanism as aqueous nitrate photolysi

Ursodeoxycholic acid inhibits the induction of nitric oxide synthase.

Ursodeoxycholic acid was recently recognized as an effective agent in the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis. Since the beneficial effect of ursodeoxycholic acid therapy appears to be mediated in part by an immune mechanism, we evaluated the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid on the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), elevated production of which could be important in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity. Ursodeoxycholic acid (0.1-1000 microM) inhibited NO production by bacterial lipopolysaccharide-activated J774 macrophages in a concentration-dependent fashion, but the cytotoxicity was also evident

Generation of nitric oxide and possibly nitroxyl by nitrosation of sulfohydroxamic acids and hydroxamic acids.

Diazeniumdiolates (NONOates) and sulfohydroxamic acids are chemical entities that spontaneously generate nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO), respectively, at physiological pH and temperature. By combining the functional aspects of the NONOates with the hydroxamic acids and sulfohydroxamic acids, hybrid NONOate-type compounds that could theoretically generate nitroxyl or nitric oxide can be rationalized. Although the instability of these compounds, viz., the N-nitrosohydroxamic acids and the N-nitrososulfohydroxamic acids, precluded their chemical characterization by actual isolation, their t

Determination of chloride and sulfate in semiconductor-grade etchants comprised of acetic acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid.

The variable-capacity Dionex Cryptand A1 column was used for the determination of low-ppm levels of chloride and sulfate in etchants comprised of acetic acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid. All possible ratios of the three acids could be analyzed for chloride and sulfate, if the samples were first diluted 1:100. However, a suitable eluent program was found to be needed for each mixture. A proprietary formulation was chosen to undergo this suitability determination. The resulting gradient was 10 mM KOH with a step to 30 mM NaOH at 15 min, flow-rate=0.5 ml/min; column temperature=29 degrees C;…

Case report: Mixed hydrofluoric and nitric acid mist inhalation poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrofluoric and nitric acids are strongly acidic substances with strong oxidation and are widely used in industrial production. Chemical pneumonia caused by the inhalation of strong acids has occasionally been reported. Severe chemical pneumonia can lead to acute pulmonary edema and life-threatening acute respiratory distress syndrome. The treatment of chemical pneumonia mainly relies on symptomatic and supportive treatment such as anti-inflammatory and anti-infection. CASE DESCRIPTION: This study reports three cases of chemical pneumonia caused by the inhalation of a mixed hyd…

Role of cavitation on the dissolution of lanthanide oxides in nitric acid.

The dissolution of lanthanide oxides in nitric acid is a key step in hydrometallurgical processing, nuclear materials management, and the production of high purity lanthanides. However, dissolution kinetics are often limited by the refractory nature and high lattice stability of these oxides. The present study establishes a mechanistic framework for the ultrasound-assisted dissolution of selected lanthanide oxides (CeO2, Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Yb2O3 and Lu2O3) in nitric acid, with emphasis on the interplay between cavitation dynamics, material properties and reaction pathways. Under silent conditions, …

Photolysis of Nitric Acid and Nitrate on Natural and Artificial Surfaces.

Photolysis of nitric acid and nitrate (HNO3/nitrate) was investigated on the surfaces of natural and artificial materials, including plant leaves, metal sheets, and construction materials. The surfaces were conditioned in the outdoor air prior to experiments to receive natural depositions of ambient HNO3/nitrate and other atmospheric constituents. The photolysis rate constant (JHNO3(s)) of the surface HNO3/nitrate was measured based on the production rates of nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The JHNO3(s) values, from 6.0 × 10(-6) s(-1) to 3.7 × 10(-4) s(-1), are 1 to 3 orders of …

Valproic acid alters nitric oxide status in neurulating mouse embryos.

The molecular bases of the teratogenic effects elicited by valproic acid (VPA) are not fully defined. It was previously shown that inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis is associated with an enhancement of the teratogenic effects of VPA, while amplification of NO signal by sildenafil prompted a dose-dependent reduction of VPA-induced neural tube defects. In this study, for the first time, the effect of VPA on the NO synthesis was evaluated in mouse embryos during early organogenesis. On gestation day 8, ICR-CD1 mice received 600 mg/kg of VPA. Eight and 24 h later embryos were collected and

Thermal hazard evaluation of lauroyl peroxide mixed with nitric acid.

Many thermal runaway incidents have been caused by organic peroxides due to the peroxy group, -O-O-, which is essentially unstable and active. Lauroyl peroxide (LPO) is also sensitive to thermal sources and is incompatible with many materials, such as acids, bases, metals, and ions. From the thermal decomposition reaction of various concentrations of nitric acid (HNO3) (from lower to higher concentrations) with LPO, experimental data were obtained as to its exothermic onset temperature (T0), heat of decomposition (ΔHd), isothermal time to maximum rate (TMRiso), and other safety parameters excl…
