Odontogenic Cysts.

Odontogenic cysts are epithelial-lined pathologic cavities and surrounded by fibrous connective tissue that originate from odontogenic tissues that occur in tooth-bearing regions of maxilla and mandible. Cystic conditions of the jaw cause bony destruction and may cause resorption or displacement of adjacent teeth. Odontogenic cysts have developmental or inflammatory origins. More cases have been published in the adult age group than the pediatric population. Periapical cyst and dentigerous cysts are frequently reported conditions in dental practice. Histopathologic examination remains the gold…

Odontogenic Cysts - An Overview.

This article aims to discuss the clinical features, radiological assessment, histopathology and management of a variety of odontogenic cysts. It also highlights the reclassification of odontogenic keratocysts to keratocystic odontogenic tumours.

Lipopigment in odontogenic cysts.

A study of 105 odontogenic cysts revealed the presence of pigmented cells in the cyst wall in 38% of the cases. The frequency of pigmented cells was higher in the inflammatory odontogenic cysts than in the development cysts. Although isolated pigmented cells were seen within the epithelial lining and cyst cavity, the larger collections were closely associated with cholesterol crystals and hemosiderin deposits; they contained light brown cytoplasmic pigment which manifested sudanophilia, acid-fastness, silver reduction capacity, PAS positivity and yellow autofluorescence in ultraviolet light. T…

Odontogenic Cysts and Neoplasms.

This article reviews a myriad of common and uncommon odontogenic cysts and tumors. The clinical presentation, gross and microscopic features, differential diagnosis, prognosis, and diagnostic pitfalls are addressed for inflammatory cysts (periapical cyst, mandibular infected buccal cyst/paradental cyst), developmental cysts (dentigerous, lateral periodontal, glandular odontogenic, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst), benign tumors (keratocystic odontogenic tumor, ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma and fibroodontoma, odonto…

Expression of Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts: A comparative study between odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts are the most common cysts of the jaws and are formed from the remnants of the odontogenic apparatus. Among these odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts (RCs) (about 60% of all diagnosed jaw cysts), dentigerous cysts (DCs) (16.6% of all jaw cysts) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) (11.2% of all developmental odontogenic cysts) are the most common. The behavior of any lesion is generally reflected by its growth potential. Growth potential is determined by measuring the cell proliferative activity. The cell proliferative activity is measured by various …

CITED1 expression in odontogenic cysts.

BACKGROUND: Originating from odontogenic tissue, Odontogenic cysts are pathological cavities lined with epithelial cells and surrounded by fibrous connective tissue. This study investigated expression of CITED1 protein in different types of odontogenic cysts. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 40 keratocysts, 40 radicular cysts, and 40 dentigerous cysts were excised and processed for routine paraffin wax embedding protocol. Macroscopic and panoramic radiographies images were used for diagnosis. Demographical properties and dental parameters were recorded. Cystic tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin …

Calretinin expression in odontogenic cysts.

Calretinin is a calcium-binding protein with a possible role as a calcium buffer, calcium-sensor, or regulator of apoptosis. Calretinin is e … sts, follicular cysts, orthokeratinized keratocysts, and parakeratinized keratocysts. A total of 70 odontogenic cysts, 24 radicular cysts, 24 follicular cysts, and 22 odontogenic keratocysts (10 orthokeratinized keratocysts, 12 parakeratinized keratocysts) were evaluated. All the radicular cysts, follicular cysts, and orthokeratinized keratocysts were negative. How …

[Malignant transformation of odontogenic cysts].

Five out of 4,172 operated maxillary cysts (3 developed within the maxillary and 2 in the mandible) presented a malignant change of epithelium. In all these 5 cases histology demonstrated a transition from normal to cancerous epithelium. The overall percentage of malignant change was of 0.12%, with 0.077% for non-keratinized epithelium lining odontogenic cysts (3 cases) and 0.65%, that is 8 times higher, for keratinized ones (2 cases). Keratinization of cystic epithelium and chronic inflammatory lesions were the main risk factors.

Developmental odontogenic cysts. An update.

This review paper reports recent advances in the subject of developmental odontogenic cysts, essentially those of the past decade, starting with reference to the new WHO classification (1). On keratocysts, the latest reported recurrence rates are assessed as are their mode of growth, immunocytochemistry, immunology, genetic studies, and work on specific keratocyst antigens. There is a critical account of the group of lesions which includes the gingival cyst of adults, lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid odontogenic cyst and glandular odontogenic cyst, and their possible relationship to one anot…
