Arthroscopic Osteophyte Resection for Osteophyte-Induced Popliteal Impingement.

Popliteal tendinitis causes lateral knee pain. A cause is impingement of the popliteal tendon by lateral femoral condylar osteophytes. Conservative and surgical treatments have been reported; however, popliteal impingement is a relatively rare disease, and no treatment has been established. Reduction of mechanical stress is important in the treatment of impingement syndromes. The popliteal tendon is an important tissue that contributes to knee stability and, therefore, usually cannot be transected. On the other hand, osteophyte resection may allow the reduction of mechanical stress. Therefore,…

Osteophyte induced lung fibrosis prevalence and osteophyte qualities predicting disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of osteophyte induced lung fibrosis (OIF) and its relationship to osteophyte size, location, and surrounding fat. METHODS: 94 CT scans of the chest were reviewed, size of the largest osteophyte and the presence of fibrosis were recorded. RESULTS: Presence of fibrosis was higher among patient with large (>10 mm) osteophytes compared to those with small (1-10mm) osteophytes. Age and presence of periosteophyte fat were significantly associated with presence of fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: As the size of an osteophyte increases, there is a greater likelihood of …

Cervical osteophyte induced dysphagia.

Although cervical spondylosis is a common disorder, dysphagia induced by osteophyte formation is uncommon. Fewer than one hundred cases of cervical osteophyte induced dysphagia have been reported, with little attention to the diagnosis by barium swallow. The radiological features of two cases treated surgically with good results are described. Both cases complained of dysphagia while one had associated respiratory obstruction on forward flexion of his neck. The features on barium study of cervical osteophytes causing dysphagia include deformity at the level of osteophyte formation, in both AP …

Surgery for osteophyte-induced dysphagia.

A patient with DISH in whom osteophytes caused severe dysphagia has been described. Surgical removal of the osteophytes was simple and effective. The features of DISH have been summarized, the pertinent literature reviewed and the role of surgery discussed.

Review Article: Osteophytes.

An osteophyte is a fibrocartilage-capped bony outgrowth that is one of the features of osteoarthritis. This study reviewed the types, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and medical and surgical treatment of osteophytes. Extraspinal osteophytes are classified as marginal, central, periosteal, or capsular, whereas vertebral osteophytes are classified as traction or claw. Risk factors for development of osteophytes include age, body mass index, physical activity, and other genetic and environmental factors. Transforming growth factor β plays a role in the pathophysiology of os…

The mechanical 'quality' of osteophytes.

Intrinsic mechanical properties of osteophytes have been compared with those of normal articular cartilage by obtaining force-indentation curves. The cartilage of the osteophyte was found to be thinner than articular cartilage. The mean stiffness of osteophytes was 272.8 (+/- 78.8) N/mm and the mean stiffness of articular cartilage was 1412 (+/- 917.3) N/mm.
