This case series describes the presentation, diagnostic, and pathologic findings for mesothelioma in ten Panthera felids at two sanctuaries. Over ten years, seven African lions (Panthera leo) and three tigers (Panthera tigris) were diagnosed with mesothelioma, with a median age of 18 years. The most common clinical signs were nonspecific (lethargy, hyporexia, weight loss) and respiratory (coughing, wheezing, dyspnea), linked to cavitary effusions. Endometrial hyperplasia (EH) is a pathologic condition of the uterus with increased endometrial gland to stroma ratio compared to normal cyclic uterine proliferation. In domestic animals, EH often involves cystic distension of proliferating endometrial glands and may be concurrent with pyometra. Serum protein electrophoresis and acute phase protein quantitation have been demonstrated as important tools in clinical pathology testing of nondomesticated mammals. The goal of this study was to validate a commercially available reagent for serum amyloid A (SAA) and obtain preliminary data for SAA and protein electrophoresis in lions and tigers. OBJECTIVE: To report the diagnosis and treatment of an orbital choristoma in a 2-year-old male jaguar (Panthera onca).
ANIMAL STUDIED: Jaguar (Panthera onca).
PROCEDURES: The patient presented with unilateral periorbital edema, strabismus, exophthalmia, epiphora, and conjunctivitis. Initial diagnosis was achieved via general physical and ophthalmic exams, ultrasound, computed tomography, and cytology. The cystic structure was surgically excised and submitted for histopathology.
RESULTS: Histopathology provided definitive diagnosis of a choristomatous cyst of lacrimal or conjunctival origin.

A 21-yr-old female jaguar (Panthera onca) died in a zoo in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil, following a history of abdominal distension, ascites, anorexia, and dyspnea. At necropsy, a dark red, watery, blood-tinged serous fluid was present in the abdominal cavity. The peritoneum was thick with firm, yellow, villous projections. Histologically, the tumors were composed of a biphasic population of cells, which reacted to anti-cytokeratin and anti-vimentin antibodies, consistent with a biphasic benign mesothelioma of peritoneal origin. This is the first reported case of mesothelioma in a captive jaguar.

Malignant lymphoma has become an increasingly recognized problem in African lions (Panthera leo). Eleven African lions (9 male and 2 female) with clinical signs and gross and microscopic lesions of malignant lymphoma were evaluated in this study. All animals were older adults, ranging in age from 14 to 19 years. The purpose of this study was to detect the antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii in Royal Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris), Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica), leopards (Panthera pardus), and elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) residing in the Mahendra Chaudhury Zoological Park, in Chhatbir, Punjab (India) during winter and monsoon seasons.
