Contraceptive use, source of contraception, history of abortion, current pregnancy intention, and fertility rates are evaluated for a national sample of women using data from the Paraguay Contraceptive Prevalence Survey, conducted in 1977. The survey found that 15.5 percent of all women aged 15--44 and 23.6 percent of ever-married women were using effective contraceptive methods. The urban/rural difference in contraceptive use paralleled fertility differentials: over 40 percent of ever-married women were using contraception in Greater Asuncion and other urban areas compared with 15 percent in …

Patients with corneal ulcer, residing mainly in rural areas of Paraguay, were controlled for mycotic eye infections. In 26 cases out of 45 (58%) presence of filamentous fungi was observed (Fusarium sp. (11), Aspergillus sp. (5), Cladosporium sp. (3), Alternaria sp. (2), Acremonium sp. (1), Curvularia sp. (1), culture negative (3)). In 17 cases also pathogenic bacteria were present. Most of the patients were farmers and belonged to the low income class. These data indicate that mycotic keratitis may be a frequent cause for eye infections in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Since the end of the 20th century, dengue has periodically devastated Paraguay. Its high morbidity and mortality translate into a high global socio-economic impact and a high burden on health care systems.
AIM: To determine the economic cost and burden of dengue in Paraguay.
METHODS: The direct and indirect costs of dengue were estimated in both outpatient and hospitalized cases. Likewise, the years of life adjusted for disability (DALY) were calculated from the sum of the years of life lost (YPLL) due to premature mortality in the population and years lost due to disability (DVS…

The incidence of malignant trophoblastic diseases from 1960 to 1969 and 1970 to 1974 in the population of Parguay was low, as shown by the analysis of unselected hospital admissions as compared to the total population. Paraguay showed disease characteristics comparable to those of developing countries where malignant diseases of the trophoblast have elevated frequencies. The apparently high frequencies in lower socioeconomic groups appear to be due to the fact that these groups make up a large proportion of the hospital population. The hardship of poverty predisposes to the hospital concentrat…

The crown morphology of 202 dental casts from living Lengua Indians is described and compared with other Amerind, Melanesian, and Caucasoid samples. The Lengua dentition shows a high Mongoloid component with little effects of possible European admixture, thus supporting the theory that despite early Franciscan and Jesuit attempts at missionization, much of the Paraguayan Chaco has remained genetically and culturally relatively intact well into the present century. A finding of note was the apparent sexual dimorphism of the Carabelli cusp, which questions earlier assumptions that no correction …

In 1987, 38 percent of married Paraguayan women aged 15-44 were practicing contraception, with oral contraceptives being the most prevalent method. Fertility rates for the population were at corresponding levels, with an overall fertility rate of 5.4 births per woman. Fertility has not changed substantially for the nation as a whole since 1979, and contraceptive use has increased by only 6 percentage points. Findings from the present study are consistent with the lack of a public sector family planning program in the country. Pharmacies are the principal source of contraceptives in the country…

INTRODUCTION: Underestimation of zoonoses is exacerbated in low and middle-income countries due mainly to inequalities with serious consequences in healthcare. This is difficult to gauge and reduce the impact of those diseases. Our study focuses on Paraguay, where the livestock industry is one of the major components of the country's economy. Therefore, the rationale of this study was to develop a case study in Paraguay to estimate the dual impact of zoonotic diseases on both the human health and animal health sector and thus determine the societal burden of such diseases.

Glaucoma is the third-most-frequent cause of blindness in the world, with a total of 5.2 million blind people as a result of this disease; 80% live in developing countries. In Paraguay, after cataract it is the second-most-frequent-cause. Early detection of the risk factors and groups can help to avoid progress of this disease. Trauma, cataract and infectious uveitis represent special risks for developing secondary glaucoma, which is a more frequent cause of blindness in third-world countries than in industrialized nations. Until now there has been little data regarding the causes, disease cou…

The incidence of complete hydatidiform mole in Paraguay is 0.23-0.25 cases per 1,000 pregnancies. The incidence is as high at the extremes of reproductive age as at other ages. That finding is at variance with long-accepted concepts. The incidence in the 15- to 19-year age group is lower than earlier, with a greater use of contraceptives in the older group. Complete mole is a rare condition with a high incidence in certain geographical areas.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the socio-demographic and clinical-epidemiological characteristics and to determine the factors associated with the mortality of people diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) in Paraguay.
METHODS: Operational research with a retrospective cohort design of cases diagnosed with TB in Paraguay between 2015-2016. The database of the National Tuberculosis Control Program was used. Chi-square and relative risk (RR) tests with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were used to determine the factors associated with mortality; in addition, a robust Poisson multiple regression model was a…

BACKGROUND: Cat-transmitted sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis is increasingly reported in the last three decades within Brazil. Recently, other South American countries like Argentina and Chile also reported cases, while the number of reported cases in Paraguay, a Brazilian neighbour, remains quite limited with 10 feline and three human cases. Importantly, early diagnosis and disease awareness facilitate effective treatment and allow strategies to prevent spread.
OBJECTIVES: Here, we describe two previously reported and 11 novel human sporotrichosis cases by S. brasiliensis fro…

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a leading cause of severe chronic liver disease worldwide. The HBV epidemiology in Latin American countries is complex and the data is still scanty and fragmentary. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of HBV genotypes in Paraguay and to estimate the viral population dynamic and spread pattern of the main phylogenetic group. To this end, partial and complete genome sequences were obtained from 60 blood donor candidates and analysed by phylogenetic and Bayesian phylodynamic approaches. The phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of part…
