Persistent parasitemia after acute babesiosis.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis, a zoonosis caused by the protozoan Babesia microti, is usually not treated when the symptoms are mild, because the parasitemia appears to be transient. However, the microscopical methods used to diagnose this infection are insensitive, and few infected people have been followed longitudinally. We compared the duration of parasitemia in people who had received specific antibabesial therapy with that in silently infected people who had not been treated. METHODS: Forty-six babesia-infected subjects were identified from 1991 through 1996 in a prospective, community-based s…

Parasitemia in a neonatal bison calf.

A 3-day old female bison calf (Bison bison) was presented in lateral recumbency to the Université de Montréal Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The animal was severely depressed and dehydrated (10%) and died a few hours after admission. Prior to death, blood samples were obtained for CBC, clinical chemistry, and serology tests. Abnormal CBC findings included thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis, mild monocytosis, and a toxic left shift. Abnormal serum clinical chemistry findings included marked azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypernatremia, hyperalbuminemia, hypoglobulinemia, and low gamma-glutamyltransfe

Malaria parasitemia among blood donors in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading transfusion associated infectious risk in endemic areas. However, the prevalence of malaria parasitemia has not been well characterized in blood donor populations. This study sought to determine the prevalence of Plasmodium in red blood cell (RBC) and whole blood (WB) units after the rainy season in Uganda. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between May and July 2018, blood was collected from the sample diversion pouch of 1000 WB donors in Kampala and Jinja, Uganda. The RBC pellet from ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulated blood was stored at -80°C u…

Parasitemia Evaluation in Mice Infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease. Its treatment relies on the use of a single drug, praziquantel. Due to treatment limitations, an alternative for schistosomiasis chemotherapy is required; thus, a better understanding of parasite biology and host-parasite interactions is valuable to aid the identification of new anti-Schistosoma drugs. The parasite has a complex life cycle, which results in challenges regarding the evaluation of Schistosoma mansoni development and mammalian infection establishment. Accordingly, this protocol describes methodologies to evaluate: (1) adult worm gr

Parasitemia and its daily variation in canine leishmaniasis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, through qPCR, the prevalence of parasitemia in sick kennel dogs naturally infected by canine leishmaniasis. An evaluation of daily changes of the parasitic load in peripheral blood was also performed. A comprehensive clinical examination and the collection of several samples (blood, lymph node, skin, and conjunctiva) were performed in 140 dogs living in an endemic area. Among these, only the dogs with clinically evident leishmaniasis were enrolled (39/140; 27.9%). Twelve (30.8%) out of 39 showed parasitemia, with a low load (median: 4 Leishmania/ml) despi…

[Parasitemia in Plasmodium falciparum malarial attacks in children].

In order to evaluate the predictive value of parasitaemia, this parameter was measured on admission in 69 Gabonese children aged from 3 to 13 years hospitalized for Plasmodium falciparum malarial attacks. Fourteen of these children had cerebral malaria, 5 had isolated convulsions and 50 had uncomplicated attacks. The parasitaemia values measured were compared with those found in asymptomatic children of the same age range carrying trophozoites. There were no significant differences in mean parasitaemia count between the 3 types of malarial attack, and only the asymptomatic carriers had signifi

Reduced parasitemia observed with erythrocytes containing inositol hexaphosphate.

Chemicals entrapped in erythrocytes by hypotonic hemolysis can be assessed for possible antiparasitic activity both in vivo and in vitro, regardless of whether they are able to diffuse into erythrocytes readily. Inositol hexaphosphate, a highly charged compound, produced a dramatic lowering of the percentage of cells infected by Babesia microti in vivo and both B. microti and Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. Several possible mechanisms for this observation are discussed.

Oral melatonin improves the detection of parasitemia in malaria.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is a growing global threat and a major cause of mortality in the tropics. The gold standard diagnosis is peripheral blood smear examination. It has been demonstrated that melatonin acts as messenger molecule in malaria pathophysiology. This concept was used to evolve a clinical study wherein use of exogenous melatonin could improve the chance of detection of the parasite. METHODOLOGY: In a prospective study, 80 consecutive patients seen in the Department of Medicine at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, suspected to have malarial fever were enrolled with proper informed consent

Babesia parasitemia rebound after red blood cell exchange.

Babesiosis is an increasingly recognized disease which may benefit from therapeutic apheresis (Category II/Grade 2C). Vulnerable populations include the splenectomized, those aged >50, those with malignancies, and the immunocompromised. In the setting of parasite levels > 10%, significant anemia, renal impairment, pulmonary compromise, or hepatic dysfunction, RBC exchange can rapidly reduce parasite burdens and decrease the bioavailability of proinflammatory cytokines. No previous report has shown such a rapid rebound in parasitemia despite adequate organism removal. Herein, we report a case o…

Malaria parasitemia in healthy Africans in North Mara, Tanzania.

Peripheral blood smears were examined for asymptomatic malaria parasitemia among 406 objectively healthy subjects in North Mara, Tanzania. A total of 33(8.1%) of subjects were found to have asymptomatic malaria parasitemia. Prevalence rates for parasitemia were highest among the youngest age groups and lowest in those 35 years of age and older. Of the 33 positive smears, 21 (63.6%) contained Plasmodium falciparum, 9(27.2%) plasmodium malariae and 3(9.2%) mixed infections of the two. General population surveys for asymptomatic malaria parasitemia in North Mara have shown much higher prevalence …

Occurrence of Leishmania donovani parasitemia in plasma of infected hamsters.

Intracardiac transfusion of plasma, mononuclear cell fraction and blood of infected hamster donors induced visceral leishmaniasis in normal hamster receptors. At the moment of transfusion, the donors already showed all the typical signs of the disease: ascites, cachexia, as well as splenomegaly and a high parasite load in the spleen and liver. All transfused hamsters developed typical visceral leishmaniasis between 90 and 120 days, indicating that all blood products were infectious. Transfusion of the mononuclear cell fraction induced the highest values of parasitic load (spleen, 766 Leishman

Molecular Verification of New World Mansonella perstans Parasitemias.

We obtained ribosomal and mitochondrial DNA sequences from residents of Amazonas state, Brazil, with Mansonella parasitemias. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences confirm that M. ozzardi and M. perstans parasites occur in sympatry and reveal the close relationship between M. perstans in Africa and Brazil, providing insights into the parasite's New World origins.

[Disseminated strongyloidiasis with parasitemia in a patient under corticosteroid-treatment].

We report a case of disseminated strongyloidiasis with parasitemia in a 53-year-old man under corticosteroid therapy. It occurred more than 16years after contamination and led to severe sepsis and acute respiratory failure with P. aeruginosa pneumonia. The patient recovered after specific treatment (thiabendazole followed by albendazole) and antibacterial drugs.
