Particulate Matter Exposure across Latino Ethnicities.

The Hispanic/Latino health paradox is the well-known health advantage seen across the Hispanic/Latino racial category in the US. However, th … takes a first step towards unraveling these diverse exposure profiles by estimating how exposure to particulate matter varies across demographic groups and narrows down which types of industries and chemicals are contributing the most to air toxins. Exposure to particulate matter is estimated for 72,271 census tracts in the continental US to evaluate how these expos …

Particulate matter exposure aggravates osteoarthritis severity.

Several diseases have been linked to particulate matter (PM) exposure. Outdoor activities, such as road running or jogging, are popular aerobic exercises due to few participatory limitations. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease, usually observed at age 40, and not noticed before pain or diagnosis. Although exercise has health benefits, it is unclear whether outdoor jogging in higher PM (standard reference material 1649b, SRM 1649b) concentration environments could affect OA development or severity. Hence, a PM exposure monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA animal …

Contribution of bioaerosols to airborne particulate matter.

Fine and coarse particulate matter (PM), as measured, for example, in regulatory air pollution monitoring networks, contains biological entities such as fungal spores, pollen, animal dander, leaf wax, and human skin cells, to mention but a few types. Although these bioaerosols come in a wide range of particle size, of 14 common types nine fall into the 0- 10 µm range and four are in the 0- 2.5 µm range. These bioaerosols contribute to the concentrations of particulates determined by both filter-based and continuous instruments. This paper reviews bioaerosol research conducted worldwide in the …

Particulate matter and early childhood body weight.

Concerns over adverse effects of air pollution on children's health have been rapidly rising. However, the effects of air pollution on childhood growth remain to be poorly studied. We investigated the association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to PM10 and children's weight from birth to 60months of age. This birth cohort study evaluated 1129 mother-child pairs in South Korea. Children's weight was measured at birth and at six, 12, 24, 36, and 60months. The average levels of children's exposure to particulate matter up to 10μm in diameter (PM10) were estimated during pregnancy and duri…

Ambient particulate matter pollution and stroke burden.

As a major component of air pollution, ambient particulate matter pollution has rarely been studied with respect to its global stroke burden. This study aims to evaluate the global stroke incidence, mortality, and health inequalities related to ambient particulate matter pollution from 1990 to 2021. Utilizing the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, we analyzed global stroke-related mortality, disability-adjusted life years, and their age-standardized rates. The estimated annual percentage change was calculated using a linear regression model. Health inequalities were measured using the concen…

Fine particulate matter and polycystic ovarian morphology.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM) is an ultrasonographic finding that can be present in women with ovulatory disorder and oligomenorrhea due to hypothalamic, pituitary, and ovarian dysfunction. While air pollution has emerged as a possible disrupter of hormone homeostasis, limited research has been conducted on the association between air pollution and PCOM. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study using electronic medical records data of 5,492 women with normal ovaries at the first ultrasound that underwent a repeated pelvic ultrasound examination during the study perio

Inflammatory effects of particulate matter air pollution.

Air pollution is an important cause of non-communicable diseases globally with particulate matter (PM) as one of the main air pollutants. PM is composed of microscopic particles that contain a mixture of chemicals and biological elements that can be harmful to human health. The aerodynamic diameter of PM facilitates their deposition when inhaled. For instance, coarse PM having a diameter of < 10 μm is deposited mainly in the large conducting airways, but PM of < 2.5 μm can cross the alveolar-capillary barrier, traveling to other organs within the body. Epidemiological studies have shown the as…

Particulate Matter (Fine Particle) and Urologic Diseases.

Particulate matter (PM) has been found to damage vital body organs, including the lungs and heart, through vascular damage and oxidative stress. Recently, renal function and chronic urologic diseases have also been found to be related to PM. To investigate this, we reviewed the characteristics of PM related to renal toxicity, including recent studies on the associations of urologic diseases with PM. PM can include constituents that cause renal toxicity, such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, and crystalline silica, which result in renal tubular or interstitial damage. Since 2008, 7 studies have evalu…

Study of condensable particulate matter from stationary combustion sources: Source profiles, emissions, and impact on ambient fine particulate matter.

Although significant progress has been made in controlling emissions from stationary combustion sources in China over the past decade, understanding of condensable particulate matter (CPM) emissions from these sources and their impact on ambient PM2.5 remains limited. In this study, we established the source profiles and emission inventories of CPM from coal-fired industrial boilers (CFIBs), coal-fired power plants (CFPPs), and iron and steel industry (ISIs) for the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China; furthermore, the air quality model (Community Multiscale Air Quality, CMAQ) was used t…

Catalytic role of formaldehyde in particulate matter formation.

Formaldehyde (HCHO), the simplest and most abundant carbonyl in the atmosphere, contributes to particulate matter (PM) formation via two in-cloud processing pathways. First, in a catalytic pathway, HCHO reacts with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HMHP), which rapidly oxidizes dissolved sulfur dioxide (SO2,aq) to sulfate, regenerating HCHO. Second, HCHO reacts with dissolved SO2,aq to form hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), which upon oxidation with the hydroxyl radical (OH) forms sulfate and also reforms HCHO. Chemical transport model simulations using rate coefficien…

Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Chronic Kidney Disease.

The impact of ambient particulate matter (PM) on public health has become a great global concern, which is especially prominent in developing countries. For health purposes, PM is typically defined by size, with the smaller particles having more health impacts. Particles with a diameter <2.5 μm are called PM2.5. Initial research studies have focused on the impact of PM2.5 on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases; nevertheless, an increasing number of data suggested that PM2.5 may affect every organ system in the human body, and the kidney is of no exception. The kidney is vulnerable to parti…

Prenatal particulate matter exposure and Intrauterine Fetal Death.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine Fetal Death (IUFD) is a rare and tragic pregnancy complication. The main causes for IUFD are largely unknown. Particulate Matter (PM)2.5 exposure has been suggested as an IUFD risk factor. OBJECTIVES: To study the association between maternal PM2.5 levels and IUFD risk, to address ethnicity as a possible effect modifier, and to identify a prenatal period during which PM2.5 is most harmful regarding IUFD risk. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study, which included pregnant women at the Soroka University Medical Center between the years 2003-2017. Estimated PM2.…

In-stack condensible particulate matter measurements and issues.

Particulate matter (PM) emitted from fossil fuel-fired units can be classified as either filterable or condensible PM. Condensible PM typically is not measured because federal and most state regulations do not require sources to do so. To determine the magnitude of condensible PM emissions relative to filterable PM emissions and to better understand condensible PM measurement issues, a review and analysis of actual U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 202 (for in-stack condensible PM10) and EPA Method 201/201A (for in-stack filterable PM10) results were conducted. Methods 202 and …
