Cerebellar sequencing: a trick for predicting the future.

"Looking into the future" well depicts one of the most significant concepts in cognitive neuroscience: the brain is constantly predicting future events. Such directedness toward the future has been recognized to be relevant to and beneficial for many aspects of information processing in humans, such as perception, motor and cognitive control, decision-making, theory of mind, and other cognitive processes. Because one of the most adaptive characteristics of the brain is to correct errors, the ability to look into the future represents the best chance to avoid repeating errors. Within the struct

Localization of cortical dysfunction based on auditory and visual naming performance.

Naming is generally considered a left-hemisphere function without precise localization. However, recent cortical stimulation studies demonstrate a modality-related anatomical dissociation, in that anterior temporal stimulation disrupts auditory description naming ("auditory naming") but not visual object naming ("visual naming"), whereas posterior temporal stimulation disrupts naming on both tasks. We hypothesized that patients with anterior temporal abnormalities would exhibit impaired auditory naming, yet normal range visual naming, whereas patients with posterior temporal abnormalities woul

"Hearing faces and seeing voices": Amodal coding of person identity in the human brain.

Recognizing familiar individuals is achieved by the brain by combining cues from several sensory modalities, including the face of a person and her voice. Here we used functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and a whole-brain, searchlight multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to search for areas in which local fMRI patterns could result in identity classification as a function of sensory modality. We found several areas supporting face or voice stimulus classification based on fMRI responses, consistent with previous reports; the classification maps overlapped across modalities in a single area of

Person identity-specific adaptation effects in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

Identifying the faces of familiar persons requires the ability to assign several different images of a face to a common identity. Previous research showed that the occipito-temporal cortex, including the fusiform and the occipital face areas, is sensitive to personal identity. Still, the viewpoint, facial expression and image-independence of this information are currently under heavy debate. Here we adapted a rapid serial visual stimulation paradigm Johnston et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cortex.2016.10.002) and presented highly variable ambient-face images of famous persons to measur

The role of visual and auditory temporal processing for Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

This study examined temporal processing in relation to Chinese reading acquisition and impairment. The performances of 26 Chinese primary school children with developmental dyslexia on tasks of visual and auditory temporal order judgement, rapid naming, visual-orthographic knowledge, morphological, and phonological awareness were compared with those of 26 reading level ability controls (RL) and 26 chronological age controls (CA). Dyslexic children performed worse than the CA group but similar to the RL group on measures of accurate processing of auditory and visual-order stimuli, rapid naming,

Invariant template matching in systems with spatiotemporal coding: A matter of instability.

We consider the design principles of algorithms that match templates to images subject to spatiotemporal encoding. Both templates and images are encoded as temporal sequences of samplings from spatial patterns. Matching is required to be tolerant to various combinations of image perturbations. These include ones that can be modeled as parameterized uncertainties such as image blur, luminance, and, as special cases, invariant transformation groups such as translation and rotations, as well as unmodeled uncertainties (noise). For a system to deal with such perturbations in an efficient way, they

The efficiency of the central and peripheral retina in driving human optokinetic nystagmus.

Previous experiments to decide whether the gain of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is increased or decreased by occlusion of the central retina involved the use of stationary edges on the occluder and unmatched contrasts. With these factors controlled, it was confirmed that OKN gain is severely reduced by occlusion of the central retina but only at stimulus velocities above about 30 degrees/sec. The gain of horizontal OKN was found not to increase with increasing width of the display if the lateral edges are blurred. The high gain of centrally driven OKN may be related to the ability of higher mam

Recognition disorders for famous faces and voices: a review of the literature and normative data of a new test battery.

Several anatomo-clinical investigations have shown that familiar face recognition disorders not due to high level perceptual defects are often observed in patients with lesions of the right anterior temporal lobe (ATL). The meaning of these findings is, however, controversial, because some authors claim that these patients show pure instances of modality-specific 'associative prosopagnosia', whereas other authors maintain that in these patients voice recognition is also impaired and that these patients have a 'multimodal person recognition disorder'. To solve the problem of the nature of famou

Cross-accent intelligibility of speech in noise: long-term familiarity and short-term familiarization.

Listeners must cope with a great deal of variability in the speech signal, and thus theories of speech perception must also account for variability, which comes from a number of sources, including variation between accents. It is well known that there is a processing cost when listening to speech in an accent other than one's own, but recent work has suggested that this cost is reduced when listening to a familiar accent widely represented in the media, and/or when short amounts of exposure to an accent are provided. Little is known, however, about how these factors (long-term familiarity and

Effects of adaptation on numerosity decoding in the human brain.

Psychophysical studies have shown that numerosity is a sensory attribute susceptible to adaptation. Neuroimaging studies have reported that, at least for relatively low numbers, numerosity can be accurately discriminated in the intra-parietal sulcus. Here we developed a novel rapid adaptation paradigm where adapting and test stimuli are separated by pauses sufficient to dissociate their BOLD activity. We used multivariate pattern recognition to classify brain activity evoked by non-symbolic numbers over a wide range (20-80), both before and after psychophysical adaptation to the highest numero

A pattern recognition method to distinguish gradual unilateral diaphragm paralysis in the cat.

This work deals with the application of a pattern recognition method to distinguish the degree of diaphragm paralysis after gradual unilateral sections of phrenic nerve rootlets in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats. The data set consisted of the features that characterize breathing pattern and of phrenic nerve amplitude. The method called for stratification of 6-dimensional vectors into three classes: intact, partial, and complete unilateral phrenicotomy, which offers the possibility to construe the classification rule on the basis of the information contained in a set of feature vect

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: implications for the recognition of speech in noise.

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. [Heterochromatin of the Y-chromosome and variability of human morphophysiological traits].

80 morpho-physiological traits were studied in a group of 55 men with morphologically identical subtotal deletion of Y chromosome heterochromatin and in a control group of 55 men with normal Y chromosome. No significant differences in mean values of most traits were found between these groups, except for some haematological parameters. With the help of the pattern recognition algorithm, 20 features were extracted which classify the two groups of individuals compared, the recognition error being 4.6%. Electrocardiographic parameters (25% of total traits), some haematological, anthropometric tra

Effects of environmental enrichment and voluntary exercise on neurogenesis, learning and memory, and pattern separation: BDNF as a critical variable?

Adult-generated neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus have been the focus of many studies concerned with learning and memory (L&M). It has been shown that procedures like environmental enrichment (EE) or voluntary physical exercise (Vex) can increase neurogenesis (NG) and also enhance L&M. It is tempting to conclude that improvements in L&M are due to the increased NG; that is, a causal relationship exists between enhancement of NG and enhancement of L&M. However, it remains unclear whether the L&M enhancement observed after these treatments is causally dependent on the increase in n

Chemically mediated burrow recognition in the Mexican tarantula Brachypelma vagans female.

Chemically mediated communication is common in spiders but has been poorly studied in burrowing tarantulas. This study aimed to determine whether chemical cues influence the behaviour of females of Brachypelma vagans, a Mexican species of tarantula, during encounters with previously inhabited burrows or with extracts from the silk of conspecific females. In laboratory choice tests, female tarantulas entered a burrow that had previously been inhabited by a conspecific female significantly more frequently than a burrow that had never been inhabited. The identity of the previous inhabitant also a

Contrast and pattern adaptation in visual cortex share a common gain control mechanism.

Neuronal populations in primary visual cortex adapt both to stimulus contrast and to the probability of occurrence of visual patterns. Previous work showed that the magnitude of the population response follows a separable power-law function of contrast and stimulus probability, suggesting the existence of a shared gain mechanism. Here we ask whether a similar equivalence extends beyond response magnitude to the full distribution of activity across neurons within a trial. Across a wide range of adaptation states, we find that population responses are highly sparse and well described by a zero-i

Human voice recognition depends on language ability.

The ability to recognize people by their voice is an important social behavior. Individuals differ in how they pronounce words, and listeners may take advantage of language-specific knowledge of speech phonology to facilitate recognizing voices. Impaired phonological processing is characteristic of dyslexia and thought to be a basis for difficulty in learning to read. We tested voice-recognition abilities of dyslexic and control listeners for voices speaking listeners' native language or an unfamiliar language. Individuals with dyslexia exhibited impaired voice-recognition abilities compared w
