PURPOSE: Pharmacy technician training and education vary depending on practice site and state law. Although technician certification provides a national standard for credentialing, not all states require it, making certification a voluntary process for technicians or the organizations employing them. As the role of the pharmacist has evolved, the need for highly trained pharmacy technicians has grown. The development and evaluation of a formal training program designed to prepare pharmacy technicians to assist pharmacists during pediatric medical emergency responses is described. A structured training program was implemented at a pediatric hospital including didactic instruction, hands-on training, and a required return demonstration. Training emphasized medication preparation, labeling, automated dispensing system use, identification of emergency medications, and preparation of weight-based pediatric doses.
