This editorial discusses the psychological effects of isolation and quarantine in terms of both the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic and previous epidemics in the past 20 years. Although much of the literature is based on healthcare settings, there is emerging evidence from home or hotel quarantine, particularly concerning international travellers. Regardless of setting, depression, anxiety, anger and stress-related disorders are especially common but can vary according to demographic features and the characteristics of quarantine. Psychological effects may be minimised by clear and consistent a…

In 1832 British colonial authorities established a quarantine station at Grosse Ile, an island near Quebec City, after cholera outbreaks in northern England aroused fears that growing numbers of emigrants would carry it to the New World. Later, treating those suffering from other contagious diseases, such as typhus and smallpox, Grosse Ile played a notable role as Canada's principal quarantine station.

Quarantine is a concept developed by society to protect against the outbreak of contagious diseases. From its original application in the favorable context of Medieval Europe, the quarantine concept has been driven by three main currents. The first involves the personification of epidemics. Although this personification had superstitious implications and led to many excesses, it did have the merit of establishing a concrete connection between travel and outbreak of disease. The second fundamental aspect of quarantining is the existence of a social organization capable of providing the necessar…

Through history, quarantine has been a response not only to the mode of disease transmission, but also to popular demands for a boundary between the kind of people so diseased and the respectable people who hope to remain healthy. Efforts to control epidemics--leprosy, cholera, tuberculosis, drug addiction--through quarantine of large numbers of people have never been successful. AIDS patients share characteristics often invoked in defense of quarantine; they do have reason to fear anachronistic and unenlightened outrage.

Globally, numerous infectious diseases pose a risk to public health and may require isolation to prevent outbreaks. The designation and release of “Quarantine Inspection Required Areas” are determined by the quarantine committee twice a year based on overseas occurrence trends, with additional updates made as necessary. As of 2024, the list of quarantine inspection requi…

Until the 19th century, the factor causing epidemics was not known, and the escape from a place where it occurred as well as isolation of patients was considered to be the only effective way to avoid illness and death. Quarantine in a sense similar to modern times was used in 1377 in Ragusa, today's Dubrovnik, during the plague epidemic. It was the first administratively imposed procedure in the world's history. It was later used in Venice and other rich port cities in the Mediterranean. On the territory of today's Poland, quarantine measures were used by the so-called Mayor of the Air - Lukas…

OBJECTIVES: After state-mandated COVID-19 quarantine measures were lifted in 2020, pediatric otolaryngologists noticed that many children who were previously scheduled for tympanostomy tube (TT) placement for indications of acute otitis media (AOM) or chronic middle ear effusions (OME) no longer required surgery. This study aims to describe the effect of home-quarantine on pediatric patients with recurrent AOM and OME to increase our understanding of these conditions.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of pediatric patients that were originally scheduled for TT for recurrent AOM and/or …
