Six female reindeer calves were inoculated intraruminally with various doses of Trichinella muscle larvae. Four calves were inoculated with T. nativa, receiving 15,000 (n = 1), 5,000 (1), and 2,500 (2) larvae each. Two calves were inoculated with 5,000 T. spiralis larvae each. Septicemic listeriosis is described in a 2-day-old reindeer calf (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) from a local zoo. The gross and microscopic lesions were typical of disease caused by bacterial septicemia. Major lesions included necrosis of the liver, lung, adrenal gland, spleen, and lymph node. The diagnosis was suspected by special histopathological stains and confirmed by isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from multiple organs. This is the first report of listeriosis in a reindeer.

Serum samples from 25 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were assayed for antibody against hypodermin C (HyC) using an ELISA. Nineteen animals were calves (born in 1998, 1999 or 2001) and six were adults (3-10 years old at first blood collection). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the screening of brucellosis in reindeer was developed. The assay, which utilizes s-LPS from Brucella abortus as antigen and biotin-labelled rabbit antibody to reindeer immunoglobulin as detecting antibody, has a high specificity and sensitivity, as indicated in a validation with sera from reindeer cultured positive for Brucella suis biovar 4 and sera from reindeer free of brucellosis.

In a sample of reindeer from South Georgia, 4 males were abnormal in that 1 had bilateral cryptorchid testis, 2 each had 1 cryptorchid testis and 1 had a vestigial testis. The antlers of the cryptorchid males were small, but the antler cycle itself was hardly affected.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in Eurasian semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is a multifactorial disease, associated to infectious agents such as Cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) and various species of bacteria, but environmental factors may also be necessary to initiate the disease. Little effort seems to have been invested in addressing the herder`s experience with this disease. This case report describes the anesthetic, surgical, and postoperative management of scapulohumeral arthrodesis in a juvenile reindeer with severe lameness due to a chronic proximal humeral fracture and scapulohumeral luxation. The anti-parasitic effect of the orally administered paste formulation of ivermectin (Ivomec) in reindeer was evaluated by means of a trial designed to compare the efficacies of orally and s.c. administered ivermectin at the same dosage (0.2 mg kg-1 body weight) in naturally infected adult reindeer (n = 92).
