Renewable energy of wastewater heat recovery.

Wastewater heat recovery (HR) is one of the renewable energy sources. The associated harmful environmental, health, and social effects of traditional biomass, fossil fuel, and other polluted sources have enhanced the growing interest in the search for an alternate cleaner energy source globally. The major objective of this study is to develop a model to assess the impacts of wastewater flow (WF), the temperature of wastewater (TW), and internal temperature in sewer pipes (TA) on the performance of HR. Sanitary sewer networks in Karbala city of Iraq were chosen as a case study in the present re

Ionomers From Kraft Lignin for Renewable Energy Applications.

Converting industrial/agricultural lignin-rich wastes to efficient, cost-effective materials for electrochemical devices (e.g., fuel cells) can aid in both bio- and energy economy. A major limitation of fuel cells is the weak ion conductivity within the ~2-30-nm thick, ion-conducting polymer (ionomer)-based catalyst-binder layer over electrodes. Here, we strategically sulfonated kraft lignin (a by-product of pulp and paper industries) to design ionomers with varied ion exchange capacities (IECs) (LS x; x = IEC) that can potentially overcome this interfacial ion conduction limitation. We measur

Wastewater Biovalorization for Sustainable Renewable Energy Production: Integration of Energy Storage Technologies.

The shift to a circular bioeconomy has shifted water from waste to a resource for renewable energy and resource recovery. Biological, electrochemical, and thermochemical conversion processes can be used to produce biofuels, bioelectricity, biohydrogen, bio-products, and biogas from wastewater, all of which contain high levels of organic matter, nutrients, and microorganisms that can be used for the production. The intermittency of renewables production, however, and the variability of wastewater composition demand the need to integrate the use of advanced energy storage technologies to guarant

Biochar Enhances Fischer-Tropsch Electrofuels from CO2 and Renewable Energy.

Electrofuels have emerged as a promising category of alternative fuels for decarbonizing long-distance modes of transport where electrification opportunities might be limited. Despite the favorable environmental performance, their high cost, driven mostly by the expensive electrolytic hydrogen (H2), still poses a challenge to their widespread adoption. Here, we propose a novel approach based on carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification of biochar via the reverse Boudouard reaction to decrease the H2 demand in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) electrofuel synthesis. We adopt a system expansion approach and assess t

A Circular Economy Approach for Nutrient Redistribution and Renewable Energy Production.

Biomass waste-to-energy (BWtE) systems provide the opportunity to capture, recycle, and convert waste streams to value-added resources that can be redistributed. Adoption of BWtE systems can close nutrient loops, produce renewable energy, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and foster local economic and climate resilience. Here, we review anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and gasification as potential BWtE technology options to serve as part of a circular economy. Prioritizing local, context-specific solutions can provide environmental and societal benefits, driving the transition to a more susta

In Situ and Operando Techniques for Electrocatalysis in Renewable Energy Applications.

Electrocatalysis is essential for renewable energy conversion, yet the mechanisms governing catalytic performance remain poorly understood due to the complex nature of electrochemical interfaces. Advances in nanomaterial synthesis and high-resolution characterization now allow detailed structural and compositional analysis, but static methods fall short of capturing the dynamic behaviors of active sites during operation. In this review, we focus on the growing role of in situ and operando techniques such as optical, X-ray, and electron-based, in resolving catalytic structure and reactivity und

Climate risk and renewable energy technological innovation: An institutional environment perspective.

To explore whether climate risk (CR) affects renewable energy technological innovation (RETI) and its boundary conditions, this study examines the relationship between CR and RETI as moderated by institutional environment. Based on panel data of 60 countries for the period 2000-2019, we show that CR is not conducive to RETI, and that its negative marginal impact shows an inverted U-shaped trend with the improvement of RETI. Heterogeneity analysis shows that floods and storms have the greatest negative impacts on RETI, and that innovations in solar and wind energy technologies are more vulnerab

Power quality disturbance identification using hybrid deep learning in renewable energy systems.

The use of renewable sources of energy has increased significantly in the recent years. These are hybrid wind-solar photovoltaic (Wind-SPV) plants. To ensure that these systems are reliable and customers happy, we should ensure that the quality of power remains high. In this paper, I am going to present a new hybrid deep learning-based approach to the specific diagnosis of power quality disturbances (PQDs) in Wind-SPV integrated networks. The proposed system combines scalograms obtained using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with deep neural networks (ResNet and VGG-Net), neighborhood co

Carbon-based brilliance: a novel approach to renewable energy in radiotherapy centers.

The energy produced from other sources which does neither come from fossil fuels nor contribute in the production of any greenhouse effects that causes climate changes is called as 'Alternative Energy'. Since our world's primary energy sources such as coal, oil and natural gases are exploited to a greater extent, we are in an urge to switch to an alternative energy. Scattered radiation, a common byproduct in radiation therapy and diagnostic radiology, presents a unique opportunity in the realm of alternative energy. As a potential source of interference, scattered radiation can be repurposed t
