Epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors: Behavioural risk factors.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have a multifactorial origin. Among the risk factors, so-called behavioural risk factors play a major role in the onset of these diseases: smoking, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, sleep disorders, depression and illicit drug use are among the main behavioural risk factors for CVD and are considered to be modifiable and accessible to prevention. The prevalence of these cardiovascular risk factors remains high among the French population. Nearly one in three adults are smokers, 71.7% do not meet the recommendation to eat …

Risk Factors.

Studies investigating risk factors for intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) have been infrequent. However, due to recent availability of non-invasive vascular imaging techniques that can assess intracranial cerebral arteries, there are a growing number of studies on risk factors for ICAS. Conventional vascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and cigarette smoking are risk factors for ICAS. However, it remains uncertain whether there is a difference in risk factors between ICAS and extracranial atherosclerosis (ECAS). It also remains unclear why ICAS is more com…

Risk factors.

Risk factors for breast cancer whose modification would be culturally acceptable have not been established. Nearly all women in the United States are at a substantial risk for the development of breast cancer. The majority of women, however, in whom breast cancer will be diagnosed will live out their lives without recurrence of the disease. Newer strategies include prevention and the development of effective chemopreventive programs. Phase III clinical trials are underway to assess the value of retinoids and tamoxifen. Phase I and II studies are underway to assess the potential of more specifi…

Epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors: Non-behavioural risk factors.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading cause in France. Among the modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic diseases (hypertension, low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes and obesity) play a major role, contributing to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. This review summarizes the latest epidemiological data available at a national level. In 2015, the prevalence among adults aged 18-74years was 17.2% for obesity, 7.4% for diabetes, 30.6% for hypertension, 23.3% for low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterola…

Asthma risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood, with a current prevalence of 6% to 9%, but a prevalenc … y complex. METHODS: A review of the literature was performed regarding atopic and nonatopic asthma risk factors, including environmental risk factors and genetic studies in adults and children. RESULTS: Several environmental risk factors have been identified to increase the risk of developing asthma such as exposure to air pollution and tobaccos smoke as wel …

Risk factors and growth factors in ROP.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a multifactorial disease which incidence is increasing with increasing survival of very preterm infants. Pathogenic pathway is characterised by abnormal retinal vascular development modulated by vascular growth factors: low IGF-1 in the first phase and high VEGF in the second phase. Many causal factors are able to influence retinal vascularization: gestational age, birth weight, oxygen administration, perinatal bacterial or fungal infections, and blood transfusions. All risk factors, both oxygen and not-oxygen-regulated, have been studied considering the who…

GI risk and risk factors of NSAIDs.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most widely used drugs in the United States. Ulcers are found at endoscopy in 15% to 3 … s--at a relative risk of about 1.5 to 2 compared with that in patients without NSAID use. Important risk factors for upper GI clinical events include older age, prior history of upper GI events, use of corticosteroids or anticoagulants, and high-dose or multiple NSAIDs (including NSAID plus low-dose aspirin). Lower GI clinical events such as bleeding may also …

Risk factors for bruxism.

The aim of the present study was to summarize the risk factors for bruxism that were identified by a systematic search of the literature published between 2007 and 2016. Depending on the size of the odds ratios (ORs) and the lower limit of the 95% confidence intervals indicated by the reports, four risk categories were differentiated. Among others, emotional stress, consumption of tobacco, alcohol, or coffee, sleep apnea syndrome, and anxiety disorders were recognized as important factors among adults. In children and adolescents, apart from distress, behavioral abnormalities and sleep disturb…

Risk factors for cryptorchidism.

Undescended testis - known as cryptorchidism - is one of the most common congenital abnormalities observed in boys, and is one of the few known risk factors for testicular cancer. The key factors that contribute to the occurrence of cryptorchidism remain elusive. Testicular descent is thought to occur during two hormonally-controlled phases in fetal development - between 8-15 weeks (the first phase of decent) and 25-35 weeks gestation (the second phase of descent); the failure of a testis to descend permanently is probably caused by disruptions to one or both of these phases, but the causes an…

[Recurrent diverticulitis - risk factors].

INTRODUCTION: Colonic diverticular disease is a common illness, especially in the elderly population. It may be asymptomatic and cause chronic intestinal problems, colonic diverticular bleeding or inflammatory complications with considerable morbidity and mortality. We have attempted at finding factors that would help us identify patients with a higher risk of diverticulitis recurrence as well as patients with a higher likelihood of perforated diverticulitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients admitted to our surgical ward for inflammatory complications of di

Risk factors for adenomyosis.

BACKGROUND: Adenomyosis was largely underdiagnosed before hysterectomy as little was understood regarding the aetiopathogenesis, clinical symptoms and difficult to confirm pre-operatively. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the possible associated risk factors foradenomyosis. METHODS: This cross sectional study was done on women who underwent hysterectomy between 15th March 2010 to 15th Jan 2012 in Chitwan Medical College. Information was collected on clinical symptoms, menstrual, reproductive factors, contraception history and smoking habits. Presence of adenomyosis was as certained from patholog…

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: In France, consumption of gambling games increased by 148% between 1960 and 2005. In 2004, gamblers lost approximatel … attractive gambling opportunities. In this context, there is a need for better understanding of the risk factors that are implicated in the development and maintenance of pathological gambling. METHODS: This paper briefly describes the major risk factors for pathological gambling by examining the recent published literature available during the first quarter …

[Risk factors for stroke].

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the third cause of mortality both in men and in women throughout the world. In Serbia, stroke is the first cause of mortality in women older than 55 years of age and the second cause of death in men of the same age. Both ischemic heart diseases and ischemic stroke correlate with the same predisposing, potentially modifiable risk factors (hypertension, abnormal blood lipids and lipoproteins, cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes mellitus). Stroke does not usually occur on its own. Patients with stroke have a high prevalence of associated medical probl…

Risk factors for hypospadias.

Despite being one of the most common congenital defects in boys, the etiology of hypospadias remains largely unknown. In this case-referent study, we evaluated a wide spectrum of potential risk factors for hypospadias. Cases were identified from the hospital information system, and referents were recruited through the parents of the cases. Both parents of cases and referents completed written questionnaires that they received through the mail. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the independent contribution of different factors to the risk of hypospadias. The final database includ…
