Within-flock transmission of sheep scab in naive sheep housed with single infested sheep.

The within flock transmission of sheep scab was studied in two trials, which lasted 14 and 12 weeks, respectively. A total of 40 non-infested, scab-naive sheep were divided into six groups of between 6 and 20 individuals. Each group was subsequently housed with a single infested index case, carrying scab lesions of different ages. The groups of sheep in both trials were video recorded continuously and all the sheep were individually examined on a weekly basis. The occurrence of transmission was measured in two ways: first, by the detection of early scab lesions during clinical examination and,…

Control of sheep scab and other sheep ectoparasites with propetamphos.

Propetamphos is a new organophosphorous compound with broad spectrum acaricidal and insecticidal activity. Dip wash concentrations of 100 to 200 ppm protect sheep against field challenge for approximately 10 weeks for blowflies, 16 weeks for lice and keds and six weeks for ticks. During laboratory and field trial studies a wash concentration of 125 ppm propetamphos eradicated sheep scab and protected from reinfestation for over four weeks.

Fatal pneumonia of bighorn sheep following association with domestic sheep.

During 1979-1980 acute fibrinopurulent bronchopneumonia resulted in high mortality or total loss of herds of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in California and Washington. Contact with domestic sheep occurred shortly before the onset of disease in each case. Circumstantial evidence indicated that the apparently healthy domestic sheep transmitted pathogenic bacteria to the bighorns, resulting in mortality. Pasteurella multocida and Corynebacterium pyogenes were isolated from pulmonary tissue of dead bighorns. The presence of domestic sheep may have been an important stress which initiated or com…

Snakebite in sheep.

Snakebite caused by Bothrops neuwiedi in sheep of southern Brazil is described. In a flock of 135 sheep, 22 were bitten and 11 died. Most cases occurred at the end of December and during January when the pastures were overgrazed due to severe drought. No more cases were observed after the end of January when abundant rainfall began. The main clinical signs were local edema followed by necrosis and sloughing of the skin.

[Eperythrozoonosis in sheep].

In 1990/91 eperythrozoonosis in the sheep was seen in our clinic for the first time. In 10 animals out of 4 flocks infection with Eperythrozoon ovis was diagnosed. Most of the animals showed a transient parasitaemia with a temporary anaemia. A chronic high grade parasitaemia and anaemia were produced in one sheep by splenectomy. This animal showed haemoglobinuria following a haemolytic attack. In a lamb a high grade chronic parasitaemia occurred spontaneously. The parasitaemia lasted for over 7 months, and the lamb eventually died.

[Interferon in sheep].

There is only limited information on sheep interferon available. Recent publications have reported on: 1. an interferon (IFN) alpha subtype, which is secreted by the fetal trophectoderm into the lumen of the uterus between the 10th and 21st day of gestation. It was therefore named ovine trophoblast protein (oTP-1), and is responsible for signalling pregnancy to the ewe via high affinity receptors in the endometrium. It is thought that oTP-1 acts by directly influencing prostaglandin metabolism. 2. the role of lentivirus-induced interferon (LV-IFN) in the pathogenesis of Maedi/Visna. The result…

Pasteurellosis in sheep.

Pasteurellosis is an important cause of economic loss to the sheep industry. There are two distinct syndromes. The pneumonic form of the disease caused by P haemolytica biotype A occurs as pneumonia in flocks and sporadically in individual sheep. The septicaemic form, caused by P haemolytica biotype T is associated with hyper-acute disease and occurs most commonly in the autumn coinciding with the folding of hoggs on rape, turnips and improved pastures. The factors which predispose sheep to the different forms of the disease are poorly understood but recently it has been possible to reproduce …
