In 28 patients (46%), arthrodeses were performed in the shoulder joint, whereas the focus was cleared in the remaining patients. One patient (89 years old) died of senile debility. The shoulder is a complex joint with numerous structures contributing to mobility and stability. Shoulder pain is a common clinical complaint that may be due to a wide spectrum of disorders including rotator cuff disease, instability, and arthropathy. Primary osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is uncommon because it is a non-weight-bearing joint. Significant osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint is unusual in the absence of trauma, and the detection of advanced degenerative changes in patients without a known history of trauma should alert the clinician to search for other disorders. This…

OBJECTIVES: Skeletal tuberculosis is less common than the pulmonary form. The involvement of the shoulder joint is infrequent. We report our experience treating tuberculosis of the shoulder in 11 patients.
METHODS: There were seven men and four women, ranging in age from 19 to 55 years (average 28.09 years). The duration of their complaints at presentation ranged from 3 to 24 months. The most common presentation was pain, which was seen in 10 joints. All of the patients had mild to moderate restriction of motion of the shoulder. On laboratory examination, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate wa…

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1992eng
Arthroscopy is without doubt the most comprehensive procedure for shoulder lesions, providing even better inspection of the interior of the joint than conventional open procedures. In 174 diagnostic arthroscopies, it proved more reliable than the computed tomography scan, ultrasound, or arthrography. The results of ultrasonography proved disappointing despite the enthusiastic reports on this technique, probably due to imperfections of equipment and lack of expertise rather than any inherent defect in the method. Arthrography seems to have a high incidence of false results. Though an invasive m

In contrast to specific shoulder girdle processes tuberculoses of the shoulder joint are observed relatively frequently. From 1955 up to and including 1980, 50 patients with omarthritis tuberculosa were surgically treated at the authors' clinic. Thirty were male, 20 female, 42 were Germans, 8 immigrant workers. Arthrodeses were performed in 28 cases, removal of bone or soft-tissue foci, or a combination of these, in 22. The left joint was affected in 26 cases (52%) and the right in 24 (48%). The youngest patient was 9, the oldest 78 years of age (average age 42.6 years). The time from the onse…

Injuries of the shoulder joint require exact diagnostic assessment. Soft tissue lesions which lead to instability of the joint must be recognized and treated adequately. Besides clinical and radiological examination, arthroscopy and sonography are becoming increasingly important. Acute sprain of the shoulder joint without instability is treated by a short immobilisation followed by active exercises, sprain (distorsion) with instability (dislocation!) may be treated by short immobilisation (two weeks) and early functional exercises or operatively by repair of a Bankart lesion, rupture of the ro…

In the assessment of shoulder joint abnormalities plain films must still be used today as primary imaging modality. For soft tissue, cartilage, tendon and ligament lesions, CT with arthrography and particularly MRI with arthrography is available today. Especially latter method leads to a significantly extended diagnosis, which in many cases implies a major therapeutical significance.

The study was an open randomized controlled trial to compare the outcome at 8 weeks with two different modalities in the treatment of 'Frozen shoulder'. Clinical cases with painful limitation of movement of shoulder were randomized to receive physical therapies alone versus physical therapies and shoulder arthrography with intra-articular steroid in a sequential randomization process. Cases suspected of having a concomitant illness and has potential to cause secondary frozen shoulder were excluded, such as, history of trauma to shoulder over the last 6 months, symptomatic clinical cervical deg
