Sodium Hydroxide versus Phenol Chemical Matrixectomy.

BACKGROUND: Chemical matrixectomy (CM) is a common procedure to correct painful and ingrown toenails. At our institution, CMs are often performed with either sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or phenol as the chemical agent for germinal nail matrix destruction. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the recurrence and reoperation rates for this procedure using different chemical agents. METHODS: The medical records of 192 patients during a 2-year period were reviewed. All of the CMs were performed in a standard fashion by three podiatric physicians. RESULTS: Among phenol partial nail avulsions,…

Sodium hydroxide treatment of PDMS based microfluidic devices.

We discuss the use of aqueous NaOH as a facile surface treatment method to control the electroosmotic flow in PDMS microchannels. Flushing of PDMS/PDMS and glass/PDMS microchannels with 1 M NaOH for 24 h leads to a doubling of the electroosmotic flow. This high flow rate is comparable to the flow rates achieved by treating PDMS microchannels with O2 plasma. Contact angle measurements and ATR-FTIR analysis show that the surface chemistry of the NaOH treated PDMS differs from O2 plasma treated PDMS. An important advantage of the NaOH treated surfaces is the enhanced stability, irrespective of wh

Accidental aspiration of a solid tablet of sodium hydroxide.

Sodium hydroxide is a corrosive, highly alkaline (PKa=14.8) household product. Ingestion of sodium hydroxide liquid is common, showing toxicity on the oesophagus and stomach. Nevertheless, cases of sodium hydroxide ingestions in pellet are rare and the management of them is unknown. We report the case of a 65-year-old man who accidentally swallowed a bleach tablet of 3.5 g. Six hours later, the patient developed an aphonia associated with dysponea stage IV, motivating a nasofibroscopy showing glottis and supraglottic necrosis and oedema for which the patient received intravenous steroids, was …

Preparation of Decellularized Human Peripheral Nerve Grafts Using Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Deoxycholate.

Peripheral nerve injuries often require graft materials that provide structural guidance for axonal regeneration. Although autologous nerve … heral nerve grafts using an alkaline-assisted decellularization approach. The procedure begins with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment to promote efficient cellular disruption, followed by a mild sodium deoxycholate (SDC) step that removes remaining cellular and immunogenic components while preserving the native ECM organization. This strategy limits detergent expo …

Renal lesions in cattle fed sodium hydroxide-treated barley.

Ten 14-week-old calves were fed a diet containing 87.5% NaOH-treated barley, and killed after 29, 65, 75, 117, 140, 179, 314, 338, and 408 days. Eight control calves were fed a diet in which untreated rolled barley was substituted for alkali-treated grain. Calves receiving NaOH-treated barley became polyuric with urine pH ranging from 9.0 to 9.5, and had significantly raised plasma creatinine levels on day 29. Other clinical findings were normal, and there were no other significant alterations in blood. At necropsy, bilateral renal lesions consisted of white cortical foci, medullary stippling,

Alkalinity enhancement with sodium hydroxide in coastal ocean waters.

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is increasingly recognised as essential for achieving net zero emissions to limit the impacts of climate change. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) presents a potentially scalable marine CDR (mCDR) technique. Here we report on the first OAE field trial in Australia, conducted at a coastal site in Tasmania using continuous addition of aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The resulting plume of modified seawater was effectively tracked, and changes in surface carbonate chemistry were quantified using a containerised laboratory. At the point of NaOH release, partial press…

Autopsy results of a case of ingestion of sodium hydroxide solution.

Sodium hydroxide is a strongly corrosive alkali. We describe herein a case of suicide by ingestion of sodium hydroxide. A man in his 80s was found dead with a mug and a bottle of caustic soda. Macroscopically, liquefaction and/or disappearance of esophagus, trachea and lung tissue and a grayish discoloration of the mucosa of the stomach were seen along with blackish brown coloration of the skin, mouth, and oral cavity. The contents of the gastrointestinal tract showed a pH level of 7-8 on pH indicator strips. Histopathologically, liquefactive necrosis of remnant lung tissue and the stomach wer…

[The effect of aldioxa on the formation of gastritis induced with sodium hydroxide].

The effects of aldioxa and cetraxate hydrochloride on the formative process of gastritis induced with intragastric application of 2% sodium hydroxide were studied. Rats were given food including either aldioxa or cetraxate hydrochloride for 6 weeks after the sodium hydroxide application. After sacrifice, the stomachs were removed, and the gastric mucosa were observed macroscopically and histologically. Gastric mucosal injury was widely induced with sodium hydroxide, being histologically characterized by mucosal hypertrophy, cell infiltration and intestinal metaplasia. These lesions seem to be …

Complications of sodium hydroxide chemical matrixectomy: nail dystrophy, allodynia, hyperalgesia.

Ingrown toenails are seen most commonly in young adults, and they can seriously affect daily life. Partial nail avulsion with chemical matrixectomy, generally by using either sodium hydroxide or phenol, is one of the most effective treatment methods. Known complications of phenol matrixectomy are unpredictable tissue damage, prolonged postoperative drainage, increased secondary infection rates, periostitis, and poor cosmetic results. To our knowledge, there have been no reports about the complications related to sodium hydroxide matrixectomy. Herein, we describe three patients who developed na…

Chemical matricectomy with 10% sodium hydroxide for the treatment of ingrowing toenails.

BACKGROUND: In the last decades, phenol cauterization has been widely used with high success rates for the treatment of ingrowing toenails. However, unpredictable tissue damage and prolonged healing time are the disadvantages of this technique. Sodium hydroxide is an alternative chemical agent that causes less tissue damage. OBJECTIVE: In this study, long-term results and postoperative morbidity of two sodium hydroxide chemical matricectomy procedures carried out by different application times have been investigated. METHODS: A total of 156 partial chemical matricectomy procedures were perfo…

Susceptibility of Actinomyces israelii to antibiotics, sodium hypochlorite and calcium hydroxide.

Actinomyces israelii has been repeatedly implicated as a cause of failure of endodontic therapy. This study investigated the antimicrobial effect of antibiotics as well as intracanal medicaments, sodium hypochlorite solution and calcium hydroxide, on this important pathogen. Growth of A. israelii was inhibited by low concentrations of antibiotics, yet high concentrations were not bactericidal for A. israelii over 1 week. When A. israelii was exposed for 2-6 weeks at concentrations equivalent to clinical serum levels, the antibiotics were lethal. The results reveal a species-specific antibiotic

Temperature- and sodium-hydroxide-dependent regulation of single-helix curdlan conformations.

Curdlan exhibits diverse biological activities. However, elucidating the structure-activity relationship of curdlan remains challenging owing to its conformational complexity and variability in well-defined systems. This study systematically examines the impact of temperature, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, and curdlan concentration on the single-helix conformation of curdlan. 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, gel permeation chromatography, and dynamic light scattering analyses confirm that the single-helix conformation of curdlan i…

Pretreatment of corn stover and hybrid poplar by sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide.

Sodium hydroxide and its derivatives are used as pulping reagents, wherein the spent NaOH is recovered in salt form and reused. In this study, use of low concentration NaOH (1-5%) in pretreatment of corn stover and hybrid poplar was investigated. It was done with the understanding that NaOH can be recovered. One of the main objectives in this study is to explore the potential of H(2)O(2) with NaOH for pretreatment of high lignin substrate such as hybrid poplar. Pretreatment time has not been optimized in this study but held constant at 24 h. Corn stover, after treatment with NaOH under moderat…
