Glycine and valine were measured in umbilical venous blood obtained by cordocentesis from 28 small-for-gestational-age fetuses. The values were compared with those from 62 appropriate-for-gestational-age fetuses. The ratio of glycine to valine was higher in the small-for-gestational-age fetuses and correlated significantly with the degree of fetal hypoxemia. These findings indicate that placental insufficiency is associated with a biochemical disturbance in the fetus that is similar to that observed in children with protein deprivation and kwashiorkor syndrome.

The case of a 14-year-old girl who began food refusal shortly after the development of diabetes mellitus is presented. Her dieting eliminated the need for insulin and urine testing and, as a result, allowed the patient to deny that she had diabetes. Although her course resembled that seen in primary anorexia nervosa, this patient was felt to have atypical anorexia nervosa, in this case an extreme form of illness denial probably associated with psychosis.

CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old woman had a previous gastric surgery one month ago while breastfeeding her 6-month child. She presented to emergency with dyspnea, fatigue, weight loss and anorexia. The explorations revealed a serious metabolic acidosis with a high anion gap, for which all other causes have been eliminated.
