California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act: what to expect from stem cell research?

On November 2, 2004 California voters approved Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act ("Act"), a $3 billion bond measure to advance stem cell research over the next ten years. The Act also created the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee (ICOC) which will govern the Institute, and make grants and loans for stem cell research and research facilities. This article will cover the history of the "Act", its potential impact on NIH's current stem cell program, and what are other states doing to compete with Ca

Exploiting stem cell therapy: the 3rd meeting of stem cell research Italy.

The study of stem cells is one of the most exciting areas of contemporary biomedical research. During the 3rd Joint Meeting of Stem Cell Research Italy (June 2012, Ferrara, Italy), scientists from different multidisciplinary areas explored new frontiers of basic and applied stem cell research with key lectures and oral presentations. There was a public debate on ethics during the opening ceremony, specifically on the limits and potentialities of adult and embryonic stem cells. Some scientists presented basic research data showing evolutionary aspects, which could be of interest in understandin

Podocyte development, disease, and stem cell research.

The glomerular podocyte is one of the major targets of kidney research. Recent establishment of kidney organoids from pluripotent stem cells has enabled the detailed analysis of human podocytes in both development and disease. The podocytes in organoids express slit diaphragm-related genes and proteins and exhibit characteristic morphology, especially upon experimental transplantation. Organoid technology is now used to reproduce hereditary podocyte diseases, and selective podocyte induction methods have also been reported. Moreover, single-cell RNA-sequencing of human fetal and adult kidneys

Innovations and Advances in Schistosome Stem Cell Research.

Schistosomes infect about 250 million people globally causing the devastating and persistent disease of schistosomiasis. These blood flukes have a complicated life cycle involving alternating infection of freshwater snail intermediate and definitive mammalian hosts. To survive and flourish in these diverse environments, schistosomes transition through a number of distinct life-cycle stages as a result of which they change their body plan in order to quickly adapt to each new environment. Current research suggests that stem cells, present in adults and larvae, are key in aiding schistosomes to

A decade of mammalian retinal stem cell research.

Ten years have now passed since the discovery of quiescent neural stem cells within the mammalian retina. Beside the fascinating aspect of stem cell biology in basic science, these cells have also offered hope for the treatment of incurable retinal diseases. The field has thus rapidly evolved, fluctuating between major advances and recurring doubts. In this review, we will retrace the efforts of scientists during this last decade to characterize these cells and to use them in regenerative medicine. We will also highlight advances made in animal models capable of stem cell-mediated retinal rege

Organized ambivalence: when sickle cell disease and stem cell research converge.

OBJECTIVE: This article analyzes sickle cell patient families' responses to stem cell transplant recruitment efforts. It identifies key dynamics that explain why sickle cell patient families are not undergoing stem cell transplants at the rate of other patient populations. It challenges the conventional focus on 'African-American distrust' as a set of attitudes grounded in collective memories of past abuses and projected on to current initiatives, by examining the sociality of distrust produced daily in the clinic and reinforced in broader politics of health investment. DESIGN: It draws upon

Stem cell research in cell transplantation: sources, geopolitical influence, and transplantation.

If the rapidly progressing field of stem cell research reaches its full potential, successful treatments and enhanced understanding of many diseases are the likely results. However, the full potential of stem cell science will only be reached if all possible avenues can be explored and on a worldwide scale. Until 2009, the US had a highly restrictive policy on obtaining cells from human embryos and fetal tissue, a policy that pushed research toward the use of adult-derived cells. Currently, US policy is still in flux, and retrospective analysis does show the US lagging behind the rest of the w

Research on stem cells as candidates to be differentiated into hepatocytes.

Liver diseases have become one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Cell therapy and liver transplantation are though to be two treatment options well accepted. However, the shortage of cells sources in cytotherapy and the lack of liver donor in liver transplantation are the major obstacles for the performance of these treatment methods. It urged us to find new origins of extra-hepatic cells. A number of recent studies show that extra-hepatic mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from different tissues can be differentiated into hepatocytes like cells (HLC). Several hep

Research progress of stem cells in the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is the primary pathological basis for the disability and mortality rates of global cardiovascular diseases. Its core characteristics are abnormal deposition of blood vessel wall lipids, chronic inflammatory activation, and vascular structural remodeling, which ultimately lead to acute cardiovascular and cerebral vascular events such as coronary heart disease and cerebral infarction. Existing treatment methods, such as statins and interventional interventions, can only delay disease progression and cannot reverse the pathological damage to blood vessels that has already occ

Xenogeneic stem cell transplantation: Research progress and clinical prospects.

Organ transplantation is the ultimate treatment for end-stage diseases such as heart and liver failure. However, the severe shortage of donor organs has limited the organ transplantation progress. Xenogeneic stem cell transplantation provides a new strategy to solve this problem. Researchers have shown that xenogeneic stem cell transplantation has significant therapeutic effects and broad application prospects in treating liver failure, myocardial infarction, advanced type 1 diabetes mellitus, myelosuppression, and other end-stage diseases by replacing the dysfunctional cells directly or impro

Recent Advances in Stem Cell Research in Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a type of hemorrhagic stroke with significant morbidity and mortality, and it often leads to poor clinical outcome. Although great efforts have been made toward animal and clinical studies, optimal therapy of SAH remains a challenge for scientists and clinicians. Increasing evidence suggests that stem-cell-based therapies may provide innovative approaches for treatment of SAH-related disability. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in stem cell research in SAH. Neuroregeneration after SAH could be conducted by the activation of endogenous neural st
