The severity of streptococcal infections depends upon different virulence of individual strains of its causative agent. The most important species are beta-haemolytic group A streptococci (GAS). Clinical manifestations include skin affections, respiratory tract infections and, in particular, serious systemic invasive infections. The pathogenicity of GAS is derived from cell wall components and extracellular products, especially toxins with properties of the so-called superantigens. Less invasive forms of the disease are include necrotizing fasciitis, myositis, pneumonia, sepsis without focus, …

Streptococci are amont the most common bacterial pathogens physicians encounter in practice. Infections with streptococci continue to occur … ble 1). Thus, the modern physician has little reason to relax in his vigilance for and knowledge of streptococcal infections.

Streptococcal infections are an important cause of corneal ulcers, endophthalmitis, conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis. We retrospectively reviewed 53 ocular streptococcal infections diagnosed and followed at Wills Eye Hospital between January 1, 1984, and July 1, 1986. Corneal ulcers (23 of 53; 43%) and endophthalmitis (18 of 53; 34%) constituted a majority of the streptococcal infections in this series. Streptococcal infection was also a common cause of conjunctivitis, but clinical follow-up data were sufficient for inclusion in this series in only a small fraction of conjunctivitis patients…

Most serious neonatal streptococcal infections are caused by group-B streptococci. The pattern of serious group-B neonatal disease in Britain resembles that described in other countries; both "early-onset" and "late-onset" forms are seen, but reliable incidence rates have not yet been determined. Serological-type III strains predominate in neonatal meningitis in Britain, but not so markedly as in some parts of the U.S.A. A deficiency of group-II strains in meningitis is, however, apparent in both countries. Present information about the carriage of group-B streptococci suggests that antibiotic…

Starting from the particularities of the streptococcal infections, and the possibilities for fighting acute forms and the immediate and late complications, multiple aspects are discussed that should be implied by the prophylaxis of this infection in the present stage. Aspects of primary prophylaxis are treated separately, that are related to the limiting of the circulation of the etiologic agent, especially in view of preventing the epidemic forms of the disease. Also aspects of secondary prophylaxis are discussed, aimed at preventing streptococcal re-infections in subjects in whom complicatio…

• GAS is a common cause of upper respiratory tract and skin infections.• Based on strong research evidence, (1) throat culture is the gold standard for diagnosing GAS pharyngitis.• Based on strong research evidence, (1) oral penicillin V K is the antibiotic treatment of choice for GAS pharyngitis because of its efficacy, safety, and narrow spectrum.• Based on strong research evidence, (2) primary prevention of complications of GAS such as ARF involves prompt diagnosis and antibiotic treatment of GAS pharyngitis.• GAS nonsuppurative and suppurative complications may occur and are mediated by in

Group B streptococcal infection is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis and is responsible for significant neonatal morbidity and mortality. Group B streptococcus is also the causative agent in 50,000 maternal infections per year. Approximately 30% of women have asymptomatic group B streptococcal colonization at some time during pregnancy, but the neonatal attack rate is only about 2 per 1,000 deliveries. Maternal and neonatal risk factors contribute to the rates of vertical transmission and symptomatic neonatal disease. Options that have been investigated for prevention of neonatal group

Since the discovery of streptococci by the surgeon of Vienna, Theodor Billroth, more than 100 years ago, they have proved to be a bacterial group of great medical and epidemiological importance. The classification in growth-characteristics on blood culture mediums (alpha-, beta- and gamma-hemolysis) has been detached by the evidence of group specific cell wall antigens. The antigene extraction described by Lancefield can distinguish at least 21 serogroups (A-T). They have also taken over the historical names (S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae etc.). In addition to group relationship the antigen struc
