Rickettsia in Texas.

Since the first reported case in 1941, Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans has been reported from many areas of Texas, with two major foci, one located in the north-central region and the other in the eastern region of the state. During the period 1979-1988, 421 cases of RMSF were reported, reaching 108 cases in 1983 and declining in subsequent years. Statewide surveillance programs to detect spotted fever group rickettsiae in tick populations were initiated in 1976. In recent years, the SFG infectivity rates in these tick species have included Dermacentor variabilis, 5.2%; Amblyomma americ…

Sylvatic trichinellosis in Texas.

There are no published reports of domestic or sylvatic trichinellosis in Texas. The aim of the present survey was to determine the presence of Trichinella species in selected representative species of potential wildlife reservoirs in southern Texas. In 1998-99, tongues of 211 wild mammals were collected in southern Texas: 154 coyotes (Canis latrans), three bobcats (Lynx rufus), 32 racoons (Procyon lotor), 13 opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), four ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) and five wild boars (Sus scrofa). Presence of Trichinella sp. larvae was investigated by artificial digestion and larvae …

Human Rabies - Texas, 2021.

In late August 2021, a boy aged 7 years was bitten by a bat while he was playing outside his apartment home in Medina County, Texas. He informed his parents; however, no rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) was sought because there were no visible bite marks, and the family was unaware that contact with a bat, including in the absence of visible bite marks, might cause rabies. Approximately 2 months later, the child was hospitalized for altered mental status, seizures, and hypersalivation and ultimately received a diagnosis of rabies. Experimental therapies were attempted; however, the child …

Rural southeast Texas air quality measurements during the 2006 Texas Air Quality Study.

The authors conducted air quality measurements of the criteria pollutants carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and ozone together with meteorological measurements at a park site southeast of College Station, TX, during the 2006 Texas Air Quality Study II (TexAQS). Ozone, a primary focus of the measurements, was above 80 ppb during 3 days and above 75 ppb during additional 8 days in summer 2006, suggestive of possible violations of the ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) in this area. In concordance with other air quality measurements during the TexAQS II, elevated ozone mixing rat…
