Thermal conductivity of monolithic organic aerogels.

The total thermal conductivity lambda of resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogel monoliths has been measured as a function of density rho in the range from rho = 80 to 300 kilograms per cubic meter. A record-low conductivity value in air at 300 K of lambda approximately 0.012 watt per meter per kelvin was found for rho approximately 157 kilograms per cubic meter. Caloric measurements under variation of gas pressure as well as spectral infrared transmission measurements allowed the determination of solid conductivity, gaseous conductivity, and radiative conductivity as a function of density. The develo

Thermal conductivity predictions with foundation atomistic models.

Advances in machine learning have led to the development of foundation models for atomistic materials chemistry, enabling quantum-accurate descriptions of interatomic forces across chemically diverse compounds at reduced computational cost. Hitherto, the accuracy and utility of these models have been assessed relying on descriptors based on formation energies or idealized harmonic atomic vibrations. Yet, the rigorous and physically interpretable quantification of their capability to describe both realistic anharmonic atomic dynamics and technologically relevant observables remains a pressing p

Thermal conductivity of uterine tissue in vitro.

Thermotherapy of the uterus has emerged as an alternative to hysterectomy in the treatment of menorrhagia, from whence it follows that the thermal properties of uterine tissue have become of importance. This study presents measurements of the thermal conductivity and the water content of uterine tissue in vitro. A steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus, based on the comparison of test samples with a material with known thermal conductivity, is described. Measurements were conducted on tissue samples from eleven patients, directly after hysterectomy. Samples with and without endometrium, a

Photonic thermal management of overhead cables via high-thermal-conductivity radiative cooling.

As the thermal backbone of urban energy infrastructure, transmission cables directly affect the stability and resilience of modern cities. However, high operating temperatures, driven by Joule heating and solar radiation, critically limit the ampacity of overhead transmission lines, particularly under extreme climate conditions. Such high temperatures constrain electricity delivery and pose systemic risks to essential services and long-term urban sustainability. To overcome this challenge, we adopt a high thermal conductivity radiative cooling (HTCRC) coating comprising hexagonal boron nitride

Preparation and thermal conductivity of spherical graphite-filled glycerol-based thermal greases.

Developing high-performance thermal greases incorporating bio-derived components is of considerable interest for reducing the interfacial thermal resistance between heat-generating components and heat sinks in electronic devices. In this study, a sustainable composite thermal grease based on bio-derived glycerol (Gly) was fabricated through a readily scalable mechanical mixing process, using spherical graphite (s-Gr) as the thermally conductive filler and tannic acid (TA), a naturally occurring polyphenol, as the interfacial modifier. The structural characteristics and microstructural morpholo

A unified understanding of minimum lattice thermal conductivity.

We propose a first-principles model of minimum lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) based on a unified theoretical treatment of thermal transport in crystals and glasses. We apply this model to thousands of inorganic compounds and find a universal behavior of [Formula: see text] in crystals in the high-temperature limit: The isotropically averaged [Formula: see text] is independent of structural complexity and bounded within a range from ∼0.1 to ∼2.6 W/(m K), in striking contrast to the conventional phonon gas model which predicts no lower bound. We unveil the underlying physics

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement of Polymers Using Carbide Fillers.

Efficient thermal management has emerged as a critical challenge in modern materials science as continued device miniaturization and increasing power densities lead to heat accumulation that degrades performance and reliability. Polymer composites are widely employed in electronic packaging and thermal interface materials due to their lightweight nature, mechanical compliance, ease of processing, and cost effectiveness. However, the intrinsically low thermal conductivity of polymers severely limits their heat dissipation capability, necessitating the incorporation of thermally conductive fille

Liquid Metal Composites with Enhanced Thermal Conductivity and Stability Using Molecular Thermal Linker.

Gallium-based liquid metal (LM) composite with metallic fillers is an emerging class of thermal interface materials (TIMs), which are widely applied in electronics and power systems to improve their performance. In situ alloying between gallium and many metallic fillers like copper and silver, however, leads to a deteriorated composite stability. This paper presents an interfacial engineering approach using 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane (CPTES) to serve as effective thermal linkers and diffusion barriers at the copper-gallium oxide interfaces in the LM matrix, achieving an enhancement in both

Clathrate Ba8Au16P30: the "gold standard" for lattice thermal conductivity.

A novel clathrate phase, Ba8Au16P30, was synthesized from its elements. High-resolution powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to establish the crystal structure of the new compound. Ba8Au16P30 crystallizes in an orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I featuring a complete separation of gold and phosphorus atoms over different crystallographic positions, similar to the Cu-containing analogue, Ba8Cu16P30. Barium cations are trapped inside the large polyhedral cages of the gold-phosphorus tetrahedral framework. X-ray diffraction indicated that one out of 15 cr

Experimental observation of high thermal conductivity in boron arsenide.

Improving the thermal management of small-scale devices requires developing materials with high thermal conductivities. The semiconductor boron arsenide (BAs) is an attractive target because of ab initio calculation indicating that single crystals have an ultrahigh thermal conductivity. We synthesized BAs single crystals without detectable defects and measured a room-temperature thermal conductivity of 1300 watts per meter-kelvin. Our spectroscopy study, in conjunction with atomistic theory, reveals that the distinctive band structure of BAs allows for very long phonon mean free paths and stro

High-resolution measurements of thermal conductivity matrix and search for thermal Hall effect in La2CuO4.

We investigated the longitudinal thermal conductivity κxx and thermal Hall conductivity κxy in La2CuO4 at temperatures T between 2 and 20 K in magnetic fields H up to 10 T. Within the temperature and field intervals studied, we do not resolve any thermal Hall signal with a conservative upper bound of [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]. The longitudinal thermal conductivity [Formula: see text] agrees well with previous reports, in both its magnitude and T dependence. Both [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were measured using the field-swept protocol. To achieve high resolution, w

Thermodynamic or density scaling of the thermal conductivity of liquids.

Thermodynamic or density scaling is applied to thermal conductivity (λ) data from the literature for the model Lennard-Jones (12-6) fluid; the noble gases neon to xenon; nitrogen, ethene, and carbon dioxide as examples of linear molecules; the quasi-spherical molecules methane and carbon tetrachloride; the flexible chain molecules n-hexane and n-octane; the planar toluene and m-xylene; the cyclic methylcyclohexane; the polar R132a and chlorobenzene; and ammonia and methanol as H-bonded fluids. Only data expressed as Rosenfeld reduced properties could be scaled successfully. Two different metho

Physical Properties of Nanoconfined Methane Hydrate: Structure, Thermoelasticity, and Thermal Conductivity.

Large amounts of methane hydrate are trapped in natural porous media, such as marine sediments and permafrost. In this context, understanding the physical and physicochemical properties of confined methane hydrate, sometimes down to the nanoscale, is crucial for environmental and energy applications. Here, a molecular simulation strategy is employed to assess some important properties of nanoconfined methane hydrate: density, structural order parameters, thermal expansion, compressibility, and thermal conductivity. Confinement is found to affect only slightly the microscopic structure of metha

Thermal Hall Conductivity of Semimetallic Graphite Dominated by Ambipolar Phonon Drag.

It is now known that in addition to electrons, other quasiparticles such as phonons and magnons can also generate a thermal Hall signal. Graphite is a semimetal with extremely mobile charge carriers of both signs and a large lattice thermal conductivity. We present a study of the thermal Hall effect in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with electronic, phononic, and phonon drag contributions to the thermal Hall signal. The measured thermal Hall conductivity (κ_{xy}) is 2 orders of magnitude higher than what is expected by electronic carriers according to the electrical Hall con

Domain-Wall Driven Suppression of Thermal Conductivity in a Ferroelectric Polycrystal.

A common strategy for reducing the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline systems is to increase the number of grain boundaries. Indeed, grain boundaries enhance the probability of phonon scattering events, which has been applied to control the thermal transport in a wide range of materials, including hard metals, diamond, oxides, and two-dimensional (2D) systems such as graphene. Here, the opposite behavior in improper ferroelectric ErMnO3 polycrystals is reported, where the thermal conductivity decreases with increasing grain size. This unusual relationship between heat transport and micros

Improving Thermal Conductivity Coefficient in Oriented Strand Lumber (OSL) Using Sepiolite.

An issue in engineered wood products, like oriented strand lumber (OSL), is the low thermal conductivity coefficient of raw material, preventing the fast transfer of heat into the core of composite mats. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of sepiolite at nanoscale with aspect ratio of 1:15, in mixture with urea-formaldehyde resin (UF), and its effect on thermal conductivity coefficient of the final panel. Sepiolite was mixed with UF resin for 20 min prior to being sprayed onto wood strips in a rotary drum. Ten percent of sepiolite was mixed with the resin, based on the dry weig

Cu9.1Te4Cl3: A Thermoelectric Compound with Low Thermal and High Electrical Conductivity.

Cu9.1Te4Cl3 is a new polymorphic compound in the class of coinage metal polytelluride halides. Copper is highly mobile, which results in multiple order-disorder phase transitions in a limited temperature interval from 240 to 370 K. Mainly as a consequence of thermal transport properties, the compound's thermoelectric figure of merit reaches values up to ZT = 0.15 in the temperature range between room temperature and 523 K. Its structure is closely related to that of Ag10Te4Br3, another coinage metal polytelluride halide, which represents the first p-n-p-switchable semiconductor approachable by

Lattice thermal conductivity of monolayer AsP from first-principles molecular dynamics.

Few-layered arsenic-phosphorus alloys, AsxP(1-x), with a puckered structure have been recently synthesized and demonstrated with fully tunable band gaps and optical properties. It is predicted that the carrier mobility of monolayer AsP compounds is even higher than that of black phosphorene (b-P). The anisotropic and orthogonal electrical and thermal transport properties of the puckered group VA elements make them intriguing materials for thermoelectric applications. Herein, we investigated the thermal transport properties of AsP based on first-principles molecular dynamics and the Boltzmann t

Thermal conductivity and particle agglomeration in alumina nanofluids: experiment and theory.

In recent years many experimentalists have reported an anomalously enhanced thermal conductivity in liquid suspensions of nanoparticles. Despite the importance of this effect for heat transfer applications, no agreement has emerged about the mechanism of this phenomenon, or even about the experimentally observed magnitude of the enhancement. To address these issues, this paper presents a combined experimental and theoretical study of heat conduction and particle agglomeration in nanofluids. On the experimental side, nanofluids of alumina particles in water and ethylene glycol are characterized
