BACKGROUND: Torpedo maculopathy, also called solitary hypopigmented nevus, is a rare though benign disorder. To our knowledge, there are no previous optical coherence tomography (OCT) descriptions in the literature.
METHODS: Results of ophthalmologic examinations (including retinography, OCT, and visual field testing) for 2 girls aged 12 years and 13 years throughout 5 years of follow-up were reviewed.
RESULTS: In both cases, anterior and posterior segment evaluation was unremarkable except for the presence of a flat, fishtail-shaped, hypopigmented lesion temporal to the macula, pointing to …

AIM: Torpedo maculopathy is an incidental, congenital retinal lesion. The typical clinical finding is a unilateral, symmetric, oval, hypopigmented lesion in the inferotemporal macula. In most cases, the lesion is along the horizontal raphe, is torpedo-shaped, and the nasal edge is directed into the foveola. The diagnosis is determined on the basis of its characteristic shape, localization and findings on optical coherence tomography (OCT). The etiology and pathogenesis of torpedo maculopathy is unclear, but it is believed to be a congenital defect of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The a…

The article presents a clinical case of torpedo maculopathy. This congenital disorder is most likely to be caused by changes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) during retinal fissure closure. Visual function is usually unaffected and the condition is revealed at routine ophthalmic examination in children and teens. Optical coherence tomography showed the absence of RPE, photoreceptor damage, and massive thinning of the outer nuclear layer at the diseased site without a significant change in the total retinal thickness. RPE involvement was also evidenced by changes in fundus autofluorescen…

BACKGROUND: Torpedo maculopathy is a rare, congenital maculopathy classically diagnosed funduscopically as a 'torpedo-shaped' lesion located temporal to the fovea. This case describes a torpedo maculopathy with non-classic optical coherence tomographic (OCT) findings and collaborative OCT angiographic (OCTA) findings.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a history of longstanding distortion and paracentral scotoma of the right eye. She had a positive family history of age-related macular degeneration. Visual acuity was 6/6 in each eye. Dilated fundus examination revealed …

Mutations in the neurite extension and migration factor (NEXMIF) gene are associated with X-linked intellectual disability. Thus far, all ma … ibed findings of NEXMIF mutations, his fundus exam revealed a very rare ophthalmologic abnormality, torpedo maculopathy. This finding has not previously been reported with NEXMIF mutation; however, on literature review, 7/15 males with NEXMIF mutations had other ophthalmologic abnormalities. This patient expands the phenotypic spectrum for males with NEXM …

We describe the multicolor imaging findings in two cases of Torpedo maculopathy (TM). Multicolor imaging can be a useful tool in identifying the level of retinal and choroidal layer involvement in TM. This imaging modality further confirms the hypothesis that TM is a localized congenital abnormality of retinal pigment epithelium pigmentation which leads to outer retinal and inner choroidal degeneration.

Background Torpedo maculopathy is a very rare, congenital, usually unilateral hypopigmented lesion in the temporal macula. Material and Methods This retrospective case series describes three patients with torpedo maculopathy. Results The first two cases demonstrate typical clinical and imaging findings of torpedo maculopathy in asymptomatic patients. The third case relates to a symptomatic young patient with a torpedo lesion, a smaller satellite lesion, and evidence of choroidal neovascularization confirmed by fluorescence angiography. In the area of the clinically visible torpedo lesion, spec…

PURPOSE: Torpedo maculopathy is an idiopathic, congenital, oval-shaped region of chorioretinal hypopigmentation located temporal to the macula. Torpedo lesions are typically unilateral, occasionally harbor an intraretinal cleft, and may be associated with varying degrees of hyperpigmentation. Visual acuity is usually normal, but the lesion may produce a scotoma in the visual field. There are no known associated systemic or ocular abnormalities. Diagnosis is based upon recognition of its characteristic shape and location. Because of its nonprogressive and generally benign nature, no treatment i…

A 26-year-old healthy male patient's fundus revealed findings consistent with torpedo maculopathy. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed a dome-shaped elevation of the retina at the level of ellipsoid zone. On OCT angiography segmented at the level of the choriocapillaris, a cluster of convoluted fine vessels was seen, and further, deeper scans of the larger choroidal vessels showed a slower flow. From these observations along with the embryological correlation of choriocapillaris development, a possibility of an abnormality preventing proper fenestration of the choriocapillar…

PURPOSE: To describe a rare presentation of torpedo maculopathy (TM).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-year-old male was examined in the retina clinic for a macular scar in the left eye. His visual acuity was 20/20, N6 in both eyes and no past history of ocular trauma or any medical or ocular history. The anterior segment was quiet and intraocular pressure was normal.
RESULTS: The patient's left eye on 78D slit lamp biomicroscopy revealed a flat, diffusely hyperpigmented fusiform torpedo-like lesion with sharp margins and surrounding hypopigmentation located predominantly temporal to the fovea, with i…
