The author examines the genetic and the psychodynamic points of view of transexualism and transvestitism, on the basis of literature and of his clinical experience. While the genesis of the syndromes still remain obscure, in spite of new psychodynamic hypothesis, it is now possible to understand the inner world of the parents better than ever before. The literature concerning the relationship between transvestism and transsexualism is briefly reviewed. Some workers consider the two conditions to be on a continuum, whereas others feel that they are independent clinical entities. 'Festive transvestism' is an increasingly visible cross-dressing practice performed by young people in the Southern parts of contemporary Ghana. Thirty-four members of a club established for heterosexual transvestites were interviewed. They were categorized into two groups. Subjects i … and the frequency of cross-dressing increased. Terms in the literature used to describe the type of transvestism reported in this study are discussed. It was suggested that the term "femmiphilic transvestism" be used to describe the condition of the subjects of both groups. The term has fewer disadvantages than terms previously suggested.
