[Method for the determination of tetrachloromethane, trichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and tetrachloroethene in the air at workplaces].

BACKGROUND: Chemical substances from the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons group are used in industry, e.g., as intermediates in syntheses, auxiliaries, solvents in degreasing processes, and laboratory tests. Due to their harmful effects on human health and the environment, their use is often banned or limited to certain industrial uses only. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sorbent tube containing 2 layers (100/50 mg) of coconut shell charcoal was used as a sampler for air sampling. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique and the use of HP-5MS column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm), an oven temper

1,1,1-trichloroethane: report of a fatal intoxication.

TCE was indicated in the accidental death of a woman cleaning up a paint spill in an enclosed, poorly ventilated room. Blood and tissue concentrations of TCE were measured by head-space gas chromatography. The concentrations found were compared with previously reported concentrations concluding that the demonstrable presence of TCE in blood at a concentration above 1.0 to 1.5 mg/100 ml would be consistent with death. However, the rapid dissipation of TCE from blood dictates that its presence in post mortem samples at any concentration must be considered as a factor in determining the cause of

Final report on the safety assessment of Trichloroethane.

Trichloroethane functions in cosmetics as a solvent. Although Trichloroethane has been reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used in cosmetic products, an industry survey found that it is not in current use in the cosmetic industry. Trichloroethane is considered a Class I ozone-depleting substance by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its use is prohibited in the United States, unless considered essential. The FDA has stated that Trichloroethane's use in cosmetics is considered nonessential. Trichloroethane is detected by gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mas

Inhalation carcinogenicity of 1,1,1-trichloroethane in rats and mice.

Carcinogenicity of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE) was examined by an inhalation exposure of F344 rats and BDF1 mice of both sexes to TCE at 0, 200, 800 or 3200 ppm for 6 h/d, 5 d/week for 104 weeks. In male rats, the incidences of bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas and peritoneal mesotheliomas were significantly increased in the 800 and 3200 ppm-exposed groups, respectively. The incidence of bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas in the 3200 ppm-exposed groups exceeded the range of historical control data in the Japan Bioassay Research Center. In female rats, the tumor incidences were not increased in any organs

Toxic encephalopathy due to 1,1,1-trichloroethane exposure.

Twenty-eight workers with long-term repetitive high exposures to 1,1,1-trichloroethane were evaluated for complaints of short-term memory loss, disequilibrium, moodiness, irritability, and decreased ability to concentrate. As a group, they had significant deficits in memory, intermediate memory, rhythm, and speed as measured by the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery. Platform posturography demonstrated deficits in vestibular, somatosensory, and ocular components of balance. The encephalopathic picture in these patients is similar to what has been described after exposure to other solven

Acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human olfactory functioning.

BACKGROUND: Animal experiments indicate that 1,1,1-trichloroethane can cause degeneration of the olfactory epithelium. The effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human odor perception still have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to learn more about acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane. METHODS: Twelve healthy, nonsmoking students were exposed to 200 and 20 ppm (control) 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber for 4 hours according to a crossover design. Olfactory functioning was investigated with the Sniffin' Sticks. The test includes the determination of the detection thr

Subacute toxicity of 1,1,1-trichloroethane, noise, and their combination in rats.

The metabolism of the xenobiotics 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE) or 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and endogeneous substrates may be changed under physiological stress situations. We studied long-term effects on rats exposed to TCE, noise pollution, and their combination. The experiments were performed in a special set-up where four parallel groups of rats were simultaneously exposed to defined conditions the chemical vapor; the noise pollution of 90 dB; their combination; and a control group without any exposure. The vapor of TCE was applied at a concentration of 200 ppm/8 hr or of 2000 p

[1,1, 1-trichloroethane-induced chronic active hepatitis].

1,1, 1-trichloroéthane is derived from carbon tetrachloride and has been widely used as an industrial solvent since 1954, because of its supposed lack of toxicity. However, several cases of central nervous system toxicity and heart disorders due to intoxication by 1,1, 1-trichloroéthane have been reported. Cases of liver injury are infrequent, with less than 10 cases, unlike 1,1, 2-trichloroéthane that it replaced. We report a case of hepatotoxicity probably due to 1,1, 1-trichloroéthane exposure, characterized by an original pathologic feature of chronic active hepatitis.

Interference with hepatocellular substrate uptake by 1,1,1-trichloroethane and tetrachloroethylene.

The effects of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent exposure on hepatocellular transport of some model substrates have been investigated. Exposure of isolated hepatocytes to 1,1,1-trichloroethane or tetrachloroethylene resulted in suppression of uptake of taurocholate, ouabain, and 2-aminoisobutyric acid but not CdCl2 or 3-O-methyl-D-glucose. The effect was clearly evident at noncytotoxic concentrations, as indicated by the lack of intracellular enzyme leakage and unaltered intracellular K+ ion concentration. Moreover, the ultrastructure of solvent-exposed hepatocytes was similar to that
